2012 U.S. Open Prize Money: Webb Simpson Claims $1.4 Million

Webb Simpson came to San Francisco for the 2012 U.S. Open as an unknown, but he'll leave as a champion who is $1.4 million richer. That was his slice of the $8 million purse (well, $1,440,000 to be exact), and it was quite a bit more than what second place finishers Graeme McDowell and Michael Thompson took home. Those two, who finished one shot off of Simpson's 1-over pace, each left California with $695,916, with the five fourth place finishers— which included Padraig Harrington and longtime leader Jim Furyk— checking out with $276,841.

Ernie Els shot a 72 on Sunday, which dropped him to 4-over, which was good for a ninth place finish and a check for $200,280. There were five tenth place finishers— including Retief Goosen and Lee Westwood— and they received checks for $163,594.

U.S. Open 2012 Results: Webb Simpson Wins 1st Major; Tiger Woods Falters

The Olympic Club in San Francisco made the 2012 U.S. Open perhaps the toughest major championship in recent years, but we still have the British Open (Royal Lytham & St. Annes G.C) and the PGA Championship (Kiawah Island Golf Resort) to follow this summer. No matter, though, as Webb Simpson was able to claim victory on Sunday with a tournament best 1-over-par for the four-day event.

Related: 2012 U.S. Open Leaderboard

Simpson hit his stride when he made three straight birdies on holes 6-8 and then made a fourth in five holes when he sank a birdie on the 10th hole. He made par on the remaining holes.

Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell both started Sunday in the lead at 1-under, but McDowell made six bogeys to three birdies and finished at 2-over. Furyk lost control of the tournament down the stretch on Sunday evening. He bogeyed the sixth hole, but even-par still had him in the lead. Another bogey on the 13th hole moved him to 1-over, but there was no recovery from that. Instead, he went on to bogey the 16th and 18th holes to finish at 3-over for the tournament.

Tiger Woods saw his troubles from a 5-over 75 on Saturday come out again on Sunday. His first six holes of the day consisted of four bogeys, one double-bogey and one par. He made three birdies to finish at 3-over for the round and 7-over for the tournament

Here is how the top 10 finished:

U.S. Open 2012 Winner: Webb Simpson Wins 1st Major Championship

Webb Simpson has won the 2012 U.S. Open Championship at the Olympic Club in San Francisco with a four-round score of 1-over, defeating Michael Thompson's and Graeme McDowell's 2-over. Jim Furyk, who had entered the day at 1-unver and co-leader with McDowell, finished the tournament at 3-over.=

Related: 2012 U.S. Open Leaderboard

Simpson shot 2-under for the day, making four birdies and two bogeys. Those four birdies came at holes 6-8 and 10. Michael Thompson had the best round of the day with a 3-under 67.

Tiger Woods finished at 7-over for the tournament after shooting a 3-over 73. On his first three holes he went bogey, bogey and double bogey. After a par on the fourth hole, Woods made bogey on the next two holes. He went on to make three birdies to make the round a bit more acceptable, but this was far from the Tiger Woods everyone expects to show up and win another major title.

But Furyk entered Saturday's third round tied atop the leaderboard with Tiger Woods and David Toms, and while the latter two collapsed, Furyk played a steady round and still finds himself tied for first heading into Sunday's final round.

This time, he's sharing the lead with Graeme McDowell, who shot a 68 on Saturday to drop his score to -1 and tie him with Furyk. Those two hold a two shot lead over Swede Fredrik Jacobson, who is all alone in third place at +1. Jacobson will tee off on Sunday with Lee Westwood, who is in fourth at +2.

US Open 2012 Tee Times And Pairings For Sunday: Jim Furyk, Graeme McDowell Aim For Victory

The 2012 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco will come to an end on Sunday evening, but will either of the current co-leaders find themselves claiming victory at the end of the day? Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell are tied at 1-under for the tournament and will be the final pairing for Sunday's Round 4.

Related: 2012 U.S. Open Leaderboard

Tiger Woods had been in contention when Saturday began, but he shot a 5-over 75 in Round 3, putting him five strokes overall behind the co-leaders. While unlikely, Woods certainly could pull off a comeback if the past three rounds of play have told us anything about how this course plays. Still, don't hold your breath -- unless you like bets like that.

Here are some notable tee times (full listings here):

U.S. Open Leaderboard Update: Jim Furyk, Graeme McDowell On Top After Day 3

Day 3 of the U.S. Open ended with Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell atop the leaderboard, as the only players with scores under par for the tournament. Everyone else is either at even-par or suffering with ridiculously high scores, some of which could actually still win.

That was an interesting point McDowell made in an interview once he was done with his round. He mentioned how the guys with +4 scores (like Tiger Woods now, for example) could still have a shot to win the tournament given the way the Olympic Club course has played this weekend.

It's become an interesting storyline that Furyk and McDowell are tied for the lead going into the final day of action, since both players obviously know what it takes to win a U. S. Open title.

2012 US Open Leaderboard Update: Jim Furyk Is On Top, But There Are No Low Scores

The Olympic Club in San Francisco has proved to be a struggle for all of the participants at the 2012 U.S. Open, even the guys who are playing the best golf.

Jim Furyk and Nicolas Colsaerts are atop the leaderboard at this point on Day 3, after Furyk entered the day's action tied for the lead with Tiger Woods and David Toms.

What's happened to the leaderboard is something to behold. Woods is +2 for the day, dropping his tournament score to +3. He's still tied for 4th, though. With that score.

Graeme McDowell and Lee Westwood are in the hunt, with McDowell in 3rd place sporting +1 for the weekend. Westwood is tied with Ernie Els, Jason Dufner and Tiger, but he had a much more successful showing on Saturday. His 3-under par score for the day says as much.

2012 US Open Leaderboard Update: Olympic Club Continues To Play Difficult

While the guys at the top of the leaderboard are just preparing to head out to the course, there has been quite a lot of action from the rest of the pack. As it has the first two days, The Olympic Club continues to play incredibly difficult, with the heat wave in the Bay Area only making the course even more challenging.

The low score of the day so far came from Casey Wittenberg, who shot a 67. Wittenberg made a significant move up the leaderboard, as he now sits at +5, which is just six strokes behind Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk and David Toms. Lee Westwood is currently shooting -1 through six holes, and now is just five strokes behind the leaders.

Woods and Furyk are set to tee off a little after 4 p.m.. It will be interesting to see if the golfers that are still waiting to tee off benefit as the temperatures start to cool off heading into the evening.
