Rafael Nadal defeated Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 on Monday to claim his record seventh French Open championship. Nadal once again had to fight the rain that had plagued the final, but neither the weather nor Djokovic would be any match for the man who will likely go down in history as the greatest clay court player of all-time.

Djokovic, meanwhile, was halted in his quest to win his fourth straight Grand Slam, a feat that was being dubbed "The Novak Slam." Nadal, though, had been in this position before: in both 2006 and 2007 he claimed French Open titles over Roger Federer when the latter was looking to put the finishing touches on his own personal Slam.

French Open 2012: Rain Pushes Conclusion Of Men's Final To Monday Morning

The French Open final between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal has been suspended in the fourth set until Monday morning due to rain at Roland Garros Stadium. Djokovic was in the middle of a possible comeback when the players were sent to the locker rooms; roughly an hour later, it was announced that the match would be finished on Monday morning.

After roughly three hours of play, Nadal was leading 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 1-2, but Djokovic was in the midst of a potential rally. Hopefully he'll be able to maintain his rhythm when play resumes at 1 p.m. (7 a.m. EST) on Monday as he looks to become the first man in 43 years to win four consecutive Grand Slam titles.

This is the first time in 39 years that the French Open won't conclude on a Sunday. If Nadal can finish off the victory on Monday, it'll be his record-setting seventh French Open title.

French Open Women's Final Results 2012: Maria Sharapova Claims Career Grand Slam

The women's singles final in the 2012 French Open featured an historic result on Saturday, as No. 2-seed Maria Sharapova dominated No. 21-seed Sara Errani in a straight set win (6-3, 6-2) to capture the title at Roland Garros and a career Grand Slam. Sharapova become just the 10th woman in open history to win all four Grand Slam titles. Errani had a great tournament run -- she knocked off No. 13 Ana Ivanovic, No. 10 Angelique Kerber and No. 6 Samantha Stosur on her way to the finals -- but the Italian couldn't secure the singles title after winning the doubles championship with teammate Roberta Vinci on Friday.

Sharapova used her power strokes to overwhelm a jittery Errani, hitting 37 winners to just 12 for the Italian. Errani pushed back in the second set with some nifty drop shots to push Sharapova a bit, but even 29 total unforced errors couldn't keep Sharapova from the title. She served well, winning 69 percent of her first serve points and holding Errani to just 46 percent success thanks to some very solid returns.

French Open Results 2012: Novak Djokovic And Rafael Nadal Will Meet In Finals

In the semifinal round of the 2012 French Open, No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic defeated No.3 Roger Federer and No. 2 Rafael Nadal defeated No. 6 David Ferrer; Djokovic and Nadal will square off in Sunday's championship match.

Djokovic defeated Federer in three sets, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3. Nadal had an easier time of it, winning his match 6-2, 6-1, 6-1.

Nadal has won the last two French Open titles and six of the last seven.

Over in the women's draw, Maria Sharapova will face Sara Errani in the championship match on Saturday.

No. 2 seed Maria Sharapova advanced in straight sets -- 6-3, 6-3 -- over No. 4 Petra Kvitova to earn a spot in the finals. Sharapova also managed to regain the No. 1 ranking in the world.

Sharapova's opponent is No. 21 Sara Errani, who advanced with a tough three-set win over No. 6 Samantha Stosur. The final match is scheduled for Saturday, June 9.

The men's semifinal round will take place on Friday, June 8.

Bad lighting suspended a pair of matches on the men's side during Sunday's French Open action, but the day still featured an array of big names at Roland Garros. One of them, women's top-seed Victoria Azarenka, was eliminated.

Azarenka was defeated by No. 15 Dominika Cibulkova 2-6, 7-6. Other winners on the women's side included No. 10 Angelique Kerber, No. 6 Samantha Stosur and No. 21 Sara Errani.

Novak Djokovic, the top seed on the men's side, survived a scare from No. 22 Andreas Seppi to earn a 4-6, 7-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 victory. No. 4 Roger Federer was also in action, Federer rallying to defeat David Goffin 5-7, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4.

The French Open carries on at Roland Garros, with several top players surviving Saturday's third round action. Maria Sharapova and Rafael Nadal, the respective No. 2 seeds, highlighted the day's action by advancing without much trouble.

Sharapova continued her string of domination, over-powering Shuai Peng 6-2, 6-1. No. 4 Petra Kvitova, the second highest seeded player in action on Saturday, also survived, topping Nina Bratchikova 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
