The Denver Pioneers have made the NCAA Lacrosse Tournament for a third straight year under head coach Bill Tierney, gaining an at-large bid and a road trip to play the No. 8 seed North Carolina Tar Heels. The game will take place on Saturday, May 12, 2012, at 5:30 p.m. MT. Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C. will host the game while ESPNU and ESPN3.com will have the broadcast of the game.

Should the Pioneers advance, they could face a rematch with the Loyola, Md. Greyhounds, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, in the second round. The Greyhounds play Canisius in the first round.

The Pioneers made the tournament after going 8-6 and losing to the Greyhounds in the regular season and the ECAC Tournament.

In 2011, the Pioneers hosted the first lacrosse tournament game west of the Mississippi River and advanced all the way to the Final Four. The Pioneers then lost to the eventual champions, the Virginia Cavaliers.
