Stay connected for news and updates

The Denver Pioneers are off to a successful start against the Ohio St. Buckeyes after the first quarter of play, holding a 3-2 lead. The Pioneers are in Jacksonville playing in the 2012 Moe's Southwest Grill Classic.

The Buckeyes struck first, but the Pioneers then scored three straight goals. Jeremy Noble was the first to score while freshman Wes Berg had the second goal. Mark Matthews, who assisted on Berg's goal, rocketed one into the top left corner of Ohio State's net for the 3-1 lead.

Ohio State answered late in the quarter, but the Pioneers were able to prevent any more damage during the final ticks of the clock. Goalie Jamie Faus came up with several nice saves, including a bang-bang pass-shot-combo.

Denver's defense, the untested part of the team, has proven effective early on.
