Karl Benson Will Leave WAC, Replace Wright Waters As Sun Belt Commissioner, According To Report

Current WAC commissioner Karl Benson will reportedly take over for Wright Waters as the Sun Belt commissioner.

Feb 14, 2012 - If we need any more proof that the WAC is becoming an endangered species, Commissioner Karl Benson plans on leaving his current position to assume the same duties in the Sun Belt Conference, reports CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd. The current Sun Belt commissioner, Wright Waters, announced in the fall that he would retire on July 1.

The WAC is likely going to be targeted by the new Mountain West-Conference USA league that will form in 2013. The conference will lose Fresno State, Hawaii and Nevada to the Mountain West this summer, but it is picking up football programs with Texas-San Antonio and Texas State joining this summer (Denver, Seattle and Texas-Arlington do not field football teams).

Utah State in the past has reportedly tried to join the Mountain West and Louisiana Tech's athletic director is openly pining to join this new super conference. Both schools are currently part of the WAC.
