Douglas Jones-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

A season after losing in the Midwest Regional semifinals, the Denver Pioneers hockey team opens the 2012-13 season at No. 8 on the USCHO rankings.

The Denver Pioneers hockey team will open the season at No. 8 in the USCHO Division I Men's Poll, with Boston College holding on to No. 1 following their 2012 NCAA Tournament Championship last season.

Minnesota, Michigan, North Dakota and Union round out the top five of the rankings.

Denver finished the season 25-13-4 in the WCHA last season, earning a No. 3 bid to the Midwest Regional. Denver would lose to Ferris State in the semifinals, a year after losing to North Dakota in the regional final in 2011. Denver was No. 12 in the USCHO poll to end the 2012 season.

The Pioneers have not appeared in the NCAA Frozen Four since 2005, but have appeared in the NCAA tournament every year since 2008.

Denver opens the season on Saturday, Oct. 6 against the University of British Columbia. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. MT at the Pepsi Center in Denver.
