The Denver Nuggets were unable to end the back-to-back-to-back series of games on Saturday night with a victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, They fell, 117-97. The Nuggets went 1-2 over the last three games by defeating the Los Angeles Clippers on the road and then losing to the Blazers and the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Nuggets had battled back from a 13-point deficit at one point in the second quarter to narrow it down to six points at halftime. Things got closer to start the third quarter, but the quarter soon turned into a 26-18 win for Portland. Danilo Gallinari dropped in 20 points for the Nuggets while Kosta Koufos filled in for Timofey Mozgov by scoring 16 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.
Portland received 33 points from Nicolas Batum, who came off the bench and played for 25 minutes. LaMarcus Aldridge followed closely with 29 points. Marcus Camby grabbed 20 rebounds.

The Denver Nuggets find themselves on the wrong side of the score against the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday night. At halftime, the Nuggets trail the Blazers, 59-53. This is the Nuggets' third game in as many days.
The Nuggets had been losing late in the second quarter by double-digit points, but in the final three-and-one-half-minutes of the quarter the Blazers managed to score just two points, a LaMarcus Aldridge layup.
After struggling on Friday night, Danilo Gallinari leads the Nuggets with 16 points. Ty Lawson has added 13 points while Kosta Koufos, filling in for Timofey Mozgov, has 10 points and five rebounds. Al Harrington has had a quiet night from off the bench, scoring just two points.
Nicolas Batum leads the Blazers with 17 points while LaMarcus Aldridge isn't far behind with his 15 points. Marcus Camby has grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Denver Nuggets made a roster move on Saturday before a game against the Portland Trail Blazers by waiving forward DeMarre Carroll.

Carroll joined the Nuggets as a free agent on Dec. 13, 2011 after spending parts of the last two season with the Memphis Grizzlies and the Houston Rockets. Carroll played in four games for the Nuggets, scoring 12 points on 6-of-6 shooting.
Carroll was drafted out of Missouri by the Grizzlies with the 27th overall pick of the 2009 NBA Draft. He'll likely find a landing spot elsewhere for this season.

The Denver Nuggets are coming off a tough 93-89 home loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday, but they get the chance to turn things around on the road against the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday night. Denver has now lost three of their last four games overall, but they have played well this season on the road (8-4) and have won seven of their last eight games away from the Pepsi Center. As for the Trail Blazers, they started the season 7-2 but have faded a bit since and are now just 13-10 overall.
In the loss to the Lakers, Denver center Timofey Mozgov suffered a severe left ankle sprain and did not travel with the team to Portland. The end-game execution against LA was nothing to write home about. Denver had a chance to either win or tie the game their last possession, but they settled for a 26-foot fade away three pointer by Al Harrington that strayed off the mark. Head coach George Karl wasn't exactly happy after the game, saying: "I wouldn't call it a great shot. I'd like better."
Here is bit from Portland's perspective taken from the game preview at Blazers Edge:
The last time these two teams met was the third game of Portland's season. The Blazers overcame 25 turnovers and 13 points apiece from LaMarcus Aldridge and Gerald Wallace through tough interior defense and some amazing shooting by Wesley Matthews, Raymond Felton, AND Jamal Crawford. Sadly that was the ONLY time those last ten words have been uttered this season. It's pretty clear the Blazers will need an alternative way of winning tonight.
...Look three places for your barometers tonight: fast break points, points in the paint, and free throws. Unless we get another weird game between these two teams, the Blazers will need to keep even in 2 of the 3 at minimum to have a chance. Portland can keep pace with the Denver attack if they're getting enough easy points. I don't see any way the Blazers jump shoot or one-on-one their way to victory tonight though. There just aren't enough points on the floor to overcome Denver's team offense that way.

The Denver Nuggets were able to return to town on Friday well ahead of most of the snow, but they weren't able to avoid a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers later at night. The Lakers picked up a 93-89 victory at the Pepsi Center. For the last 30 seconds of the game, the Nuggets played the Lakers to a 91-89 deficit, but Matt Barnes made two free throws in the final seconds of the game after an Andre Miller foul. This came right after Al Harrington missed a three-point shot with 3.7 second left on the clock.
Al Harrington continued to show why he is a strong candidate to be the Sixth Man of the Year, leading the team with 24 points and eight rebounds. Miller was the second-leading scorer with 16 points, another solid bench performance. Danilo Gallinari had a tough night shooting, connecting on just one of nine shots. He finished with six points and five rebounds.
Andrew Bynum was outstanding for the Lakers with a team-high 22 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks. Pau Gasol was also strong for the Lakers with 17 rebounds and 13 points. Kobe Bryant chipped in 20 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds.
The Nuggets (15-8, 7-4 home) are back on the road for a Saturday contest against the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers played like two teams in need of a rest in the first half of their match up on Friday night, as the Lakers went into halftime with a 44-41 lead. Los Angeles snagged the first half lead despite Kobe Bryant shooting 2-10 from the field and the team shooting just 45% as a whole, including 0-6 from three.
Denver Nuggets SF Corey Brewer will be back for the team's match up vs. the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night after missing the Nuggets' Thursday night victory over the Los Angeles Clippers due to "personal reasons." Brewer, who is an important cog in Denver's vaunted deep rotation, is averaging 7.9 points per game on 50% shooting for the year.

The Nuggets didn't miss Brewer much Thursday night when they invaded Lob City and blew the Clippers out to the tune of 112-91. In Denver's two games this season vs. the Lakers, Brewer did not log a single minute, but that might change on Friday night.

This weekend, the Denver Nuggets are going through one of the more grueling aspects of the lockout-shortened schedule: back-to-back-to-back games. After defeating the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday night, they're off to a good start to this tough stretch. They'll host the Lakers on Friday night, then travel to Portland on Saturday night for their fifth game in seven days.

Portland (13-10) does not play on Friday, so once again the Nuggets will be up against an opponent that's had more rest than they have. The Trail Blazers, led by LaMarcus Aldridge's 22.8 points per game, are 2.5 games behind Denver in the Northwest.

The Denver Nuggets were in Los Angeles on Thursday and picked up a victory over the Clippers, 112-91, avenging a loss last Sunday at home to the Clippers. On Friday, the Nuggets will clash with the Los Angeles Lakers at the Pepsi Center. And snow won't stop the game from happening. Both the teams landed in Denver before the snow storm really picked up on Friday.
This nationally-televised game on ESPN will feature a Nuggets team that ended a two-game losing streak with that victory over the Clippers. This will be the second game of a three-game set, with the final game on Saturday against the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Lakers, meanwhile, enter Friday night with a two-game winning streak in hand but looking to change their fortunes on the road. The Lakers are just 2-7 on the road, but one of the last two wins did come on the road. The two teams played back-to-back games against each other on Dec. 31 and Jan.1, the road team taking the victory in each.

The Denver Nuggets overcame a 13-point Los Angeles Clippers lead at the start of the second quarter to take a halftime lead, ultimately paving the way to a 112-91 blowout victory. Danilo Gallinari led the way with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
It was a strong game for the Nuggets from the field, sinking 53.4 percent of shots. The team connected on 57 percent of its three-point shots, which is quite a performance for a team that has been inconsistent from beyond the arc at times this season. Four of five starters put double-digit points on the board; Nene scored eight points Ty Lawson put in 18 points, dished the ball out for six assists and grabbed four rebounds.
For the Clippers, Blake Griffin had 16 points at halftime, but he finished with just 18. DeAndre Jordan pulled down nine boards to lead the team. However, the Nuggets outrebounded the Clippers, 41-28.

More: Clippers hot, Nuggets not heading into rematch
The Denver Nuggets had a very productive month of January, going 12-5 in their 17 games, but they ended the month on a two-game losing streak. One of those losses came on Sunday night against the Los Angeles Clippers, who used a season-high 32 point performance from Chauncey Billups to fuel the victory. Billups had been a part of the Carmelo Anthony trade almost one year ago, and his first game back at the Pepsi Center quickly became a memorable one. The Nuggets have lost three straight to the Clippers, which is their longest active losing streak against any team in the NBA, but they will get the chance to change their fortunes on Thursday night at Staples Center.
Star point guard Ty Lawson missed the first matchup with a sprained left ankle, but he will be available to go against Chris Paul. Blake Griffin and the Clippers this time around. Lawson returned to action on Tuesday against the Memphis Grizzlies, and managed just 12 points and four assists in 34 minutes. Even so, Al Harrington and Andre Miller have continued their hot play, so if Lawson can get back on track the offense should pick up steam and be able to keep pace with Lob City.
What have the Clippers been up to since their win over Nuggets? They've collected two more wins against top teams in the Western Conference -- the Oklahoma City Thunder and Utah Jazz -- and have now won four straight games. Last night's road victory against the Jazz might be the most impressive thing they've done all season, as SB Nation's Steve Perrin explains:
This victory by the Clippers may be more impressive than the ones over the Nuggets andThunder, because things did not come easily. L.A. has been red hot from long-range, and had made 14 three-pointers against Denver and 13 against Oklahoma City. Wednesday night in Utah, they were 5-22 from deep. With Chauncey Billups struggling (1 for 8 missing all five of his three-pointers), Mo Williams slightly cooler than he has been (he managed to score 19 but was just 6 for 18 from the field) and Caron Butler sitting out with a sore back, it was up to Paul and Griffin to grind out a win. Griffin finished the game with 31 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots. He and Paul combined to score 65 of L.A.'s 107. And what may be most frightening for the rest of the league, they are just now beginning to develop some real rapport on the pick and roll.

The Denver Nuggets took a 12-point lead into halftime on Tuesday against the Memphis Grizzlies, but a furious second half run by the Griz got the game to overtime, where Memphis would prevail 100-97 at FedEx Forum. The game was an offensive atrocity: the Grizzlies shot just 33-for-86 (38 percent) in the win, while Denver (35-for-80 for 43 percent) didn't fare much better. The loss drops the Nuggets to 14-7. Memphis improves to 11-10.
Five Grizzlies starters reached double-figures, led by Marc Gasol and Rudy Gay, who each finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds. O.J. Mayo came off the bench to give Memphis 18 points, while Tony Allen scored 17 on 6-of-14 shooting.
Both of Denver's leading scorers for the night were reserves. Al Harrington scored a game-high 23 points and added 10 rebounds and four assists for Denver in the loss. Andre Miller also made the most of his 39 minutes, finishing with 20 points, six rebounds, and six assists for the Nuggets.

The Denver Nuggets had won six straight games before falling by four to the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday, and tonight George Karl's crew is in good position to get back to its winning ways. The Nuggets lead the Memphis Grizzlies 49-37 at halftime at the FedEx Forum. Memphis entered as losers of five straight.
Center Nene powered Denver throughout the first half, putting up 11 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Teammate Andre Miller came off the bench to score 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting and fellow reserve Corey Brewer added eight points and 3-of-4 shooting. Danilo Gallinari and Arron Afflalo each have six points.
Memphis is shooting a miserable 11-of-40 (27.5%) from the floor. Most of the Grizzlies offense has come from the foul line, where the team went 14-for-18. Marc Gasol leads the Griz with eight points on 2-of-6 shooting. Tony Allen and Rudy Gay (five rebounds) each have six points for Memphis.

Denver Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson has missed the last two games with an ankle injury and was expected to be a game-time decision for Tuesday's matchup with the Memphis Grizzlies, but now Lawson has told Benjamin Hochman of The Denver Post he will play. Lawson is having a career year -- averaging 15.7 points, 6.5 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game in the 2011-12 season -- and is the leader of the NBA's fastest and most efficient offense, but much of his value is dependent on his ability to change direction quickly and push the ball at full speed.
If Lawson is less than 100 percent and only marginally effective, the Nuggets can still turn to veteran point guard Andre Miller for offensive leadership. Miller has posted double-doubles with points and assists in each of the last four games, and is making the best of his opportunity to take the lead role -- which is something he expressed an interest in regaining earlier this month. With Lawson's aggressive and breakneck pace, it shouldn't take long to see if he is operating at full-strength on Tuesday night.

The Denver Nuggets (14-6) saw their six-game winning streak end against the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday, but the second place team in the Western Conference standings will try to get themselves back on track against the scuffling Memphis Grizzlies (10-10) on Tuesday night. Memphis has lost four consecutive games -- none of those by more than 10 points -- while Denver attempts to win their sixth straight road game for the first time in 24 seasons.
Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson will be a game-time decision (ankle), and is the unquestioned leader of the NBA's fastest and most-efficient offense, but veteran backup Andre Miller has been performing well in his absence. Miller has played over 30 minutes in the Nuggets' last four games, and has responded with four double-doubles with points and assists. Other hot players for Denver include Danilo Gallinari (20-plus points in four of the last five games) and Al Harrington (10-plus points off the bench in nine of the last ten games).
As for the Grizzlies, they have yet to stabilize after losing Zach Randolph to injury and are hoping to avoid dropping below .500 for the second time this season. Much of the scoring load has fallen to Rudy Gay, as explained by SB Nation's Grizzlies blog, Straight Outta Vancouver:
Before suffering a season-ending left-shoulder subluxation last season, Gay averaged 19.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 1.68 steals in 39.9 minutes played. Since returning this season, Rudy is playing as if he hasn't missed a day. Averaging a team-high 18.7 points (17th int he NBA) and 6.2 rebounds with two double-doubles, the 6'8", 230 lb forward has made his presence felt.
It was a different story for Gay last night, however. In 35 minutes played, Gay only scored 1 point. If Rudy plans to go toe-to-toe with Gallinari, he's going to have to be more of an offensive presence. Furthermore, if Ty Lawson doesn't play, Mike Conley has a favorable matchup against Afflalo - the one-two punch of Conley and Gay, when they're in sync, is a deadly one. Keywords: when they're in sync.

The Denver Nuggets didn't get starting point guard Ty Lawson back for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Clippers. Maybe Lawson would have been enough to tip the game in favor of the Nuggets, but since he was out the Clippers wound up with the victory. Lawson was active for the game, though, and on Tuesday against the Memphis Grizzlies he will be a game-time decision, reports Chris Dempsey of the Denver Post.
Lawson has missed the last two games with an ankle injury and has only missed one game before the last two (a victory over the New Jersey Nets). Arron Afflalo and Rudy Fernandez, though, returned to the court on Sunday, and Fernandez came up with this sweet tip-in at the buzzer for the third quarter.
Lawson is averaging nearly 16 points per game to go with 6.5 assists and 3.8 rebounds. In his absence, Andre Miller has been starting in the back court.

The Nuggets will get to test themselves against four teams in the West that will be battling them for playoff position all season.
But those numbers still bettered those of the Nuggets, who shot 41% from the field as a team in the first half, which included the team going 2-11 from three. Starters Danilo Gallinari and Nene were a combined 1-10 as a duo, though Denver did receive a solid half from Ty Lawson (10 points, 4-7 shooting) and Andre Miller (8 points, 3-3 shooting).
