NBA Standings 2012: Denver Nuggets On The Fringe Of No. 8 Seed In West

After the beginning of the season brought in so much optimism regarding the Denver Nuggets, things have gone all downhill as the Nuggets have plummeted down the Western Conference standings. Once sitting near the top of the league with a 14-5 record, the losses have been piling up for Denver since then.

With injuries taking a toll on the Nuggets, the wheels have really come off in the past month or so. After winning 14 of their first 19 games, the Nuggets have gone 4-12, essentially returning to a .500 record. After keeping up with the Oklahoma City Thunder early in the season, the Nuggets are now in third place in the Northwest standings, 9.5 games behind the Thunder.

NBA Standings 2012: Denver Loses Ground On Oklahoma City Thunder

The Denver Nuggets went 1-4 over the last week and are now 3.5 games behind the Oklahoma City Thunder. A back-to-back-to-back stretch of games to end the week did the Nuggets in for the losing record. The week started with a home loss to the Los Angeles Clippers and then continued with an overtime defeat to the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Nuggets began the three-game stretch with a road victory over the Clippers, but then the team had to hurry back to Denver to avoid the snow and play the Los Angeles Lakers. That turned into loss. However, there was no time to recover from that since the team needed to head out to Portland. The team was blown out, 117-97.

However, the 15-9 Nuggets didn't lose too much ground on the Thunder. Oklahoma City went 2-2 this past week to moved to 18-5. Losses came against the Clippers and the San Antonio Spurs.

With over a month-worth of games in the books, the division behind the Thunder is going to be tightly contested for the rest of the season. Even the Minnesota Timberwolves are a much improved team, standing at 12-12.

NBA Standings 2012: Nuggets On 6-Game Winning Streak, But 2 Games Behind OKC Thunder

Despite a recent six-game winning streak over the last two weeks, the Denver Nuggets haven't gotten any closer to overtaking the Oklahoma City Thunder. Rather, the Nuggets actually lost half of a game this week since the Oklahoma City Thunder are on a four-game winning streak.

The Nuggets picked up wins over the Sacramento Kings and the Toronto Raptors over the last week, as they should have. The Kings and the Raptors are both 6-14 on this last Sunday of January. But things will be tougher on Sunday with the arrival of the Los Angeles Clippers in the Mile High City. The Nuggets are getting their first taste of Chris Paul and Blake Griffin together on the court. This game will also mark the return of Chauncey Billups to Denver for the first time since he was traded with Carmelo Anthony to the New York Knicks last February.

A seven-game winning streak is on the line Sunday at the Pepsi Center. Will the Nuggets move back to 1.5 games behind the Thunder?
