The Denver Nuggets played without leading scorer Carmelo Anthony and looked like it losing to the Boston Celtics 105-89 on Wednesday night.
In Melo's absence, who sat because of slight inflammation of the knee, Ty Lawson stepped up for one of the best nights of his young career. Lawson played 34 minutes and scored a team-high 24 points while dishing out 7 assists.
The Nuggets started out flat and trailed by 19 midway through the first quarter, but closed the gap and were down a mere one point with three minutes left in the first half., a long two by Ray Allen squashed the Nuggets run and the teams went into the locker room with the Celtics up seven.
The Nuggets were outscored by four in the third quarter and five in the fourth, and ended the game with a 16 point loss.
J.R. Smith and Arron Afflalo each contributed 16 to the Nuggets cause, while Al Harrington led the team with eight rebounds. Chauncey Billups was held to five points on 2-10 shooting from the field.
The Big Three did not disappoint for the Celtics scoring 62 of the team's points. Allen led all scorers with 28 points, while Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett scored 17 a piece. Garnett also led the team in rebounding with 9 while Rajon Rondo had 14 assists in the win. Shaquille O'Neal also contributed nine points.
Coach George Karl will go for his 1000th win on Friday against the Toronto Raptors in the same building he secured his 900th coaching victory. Tip for that game is 5:00 p.m. MT.

The Denver Post is reporting that Denver Nuggets star forward Carmelo Anthony will not play Wednesday due to a slight knee inflammation.
Denver already faced an uphill struggle to get Coach George karl his 1000th career victory on the road against the top team in the Eastern Conference, especially on the second night of a back-to-back, but that task has been made more difficult without the services of their top scorer.
This will be the first game that Anthony will miss completely this season. Denver has an off day tomorrow before travelling to face Toronto on Friday, December 10.

The Denver Nuggets visit the Boston Celtics on Wednesday again looking to earn coach George Karl his 1000th career victory as an NBA head coach. Denver failed in their attempt to notch the milestone win for Karl on Tuesday night, falling to the Charlotte Bobcats 100-98.
Back-to-back games in the NBA are never an easy thing, but when you have to visit the top ranked team in the East, winning is an even tougher task.
For the Nuggets (13-7) to get their coach the landmark win, leading scorer Carmelo Anthony needs to get off the scheide. Since returning to the court after a battle with the flu, Anthony is 22-72 (30.5 percent) while averaging four points less than his season average of 22.8.
While Melo's game has been quieted, several players stepped up leading to a seven-game win streak that was broken against the Bobcats. Since Melo came down with the flu, J.R. Smith is averaging 18 points, Arron Afflalo scored a career high 25 and Nene registered one of his best games as a pro with 27 points and 11 rebounds.
Chauncey Billups has also shone brightly over the past five games, averaging 18.8 ppg while dishing out 6.2 assists per contest during that time span.
The Celtics (16-4) are led by the Big Three: Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett. Add in Shaquille O`Neal and the Celts have four sure-fire hall of famers. Rajon Rondo is also playing his best basketball as a pro, doubling his career average of assists with 14.1 per game and scoring 11.4.
In order for the Nuggets to get Karl his marquee win, Melo needs to start playing like we are accustomed and the role players need to step it up a notch.
If not, Karl will have to wait until the team travels north of the border to face the Toronto Raptors, though the conversion rate for victories in Canada shouldn't be quite 1:1.
