The Denver Nuggets have also issued a statement indicating that Carmelo Anthony will leave the team while he and his family deal with the passing of his sister. Michelle Anthony leaves behind four children.
Ken Berger of CBSSports.com reports that the Denver Nuggets have put a stop to any trade discussions involving Anthony out of his respect to him during this time of grieving.
SB Nation Denver offers its condolences to the Anthony family during this difficult period.
With Carmelo Anthony out, the Denver Nuggets came up short in the fourth quarter and saw the San Antonio Spurs win 109-103. Leading 89-80 at the start of the final quarter, the Denver Nuggets scored only four points over the last 12 minutes of play. The San Antonio Spurs, though, put up 30 to win the game by six.
Nuggets' power forward Kenyon Martin, who returned from knee surgery, saw his first action of the season, scoring eight points and grabbing five rebounds in 17 minutes. Chris Andersen played for the first time in eight games and collected seven rebounds.
Chauncey Billups, who had missed the last week of play with an injured wrist, returned to the lineup and scored 20 points and made seven assists. He was a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line. Ty Lawson, who came off the bench with Billups' return, scored 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting (4-of-5 from the line).
Arron Afflalo put up a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) and J.R. Smith started in Melo's absence. He scored 22 points and grabbed seven boards.
But the Spurs had that touch throughout the game, making 14 three-pointers. Manu Ginobili, who scored 22 points, made 4 of 9 3-pointers, and off the bench Gary Neal made 5 of 7 behind the arc for 15 of his 22 points. Matt Bonner added three threes as well.
The San Antonio Spurs improved to 25-3 on the season. The Denver Nuggets fell to 16-11 and will face the Oklahoma City Thunder on Christmas Day. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN at 6 p.m. MT.
Denver Nuggets All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony will not play tonight against the San Antonio Spurs due to a death in his family.
In a statement posted on the Nuggets official website, Nuggets general manager Masai Ujiri stated
"Our entire organization supports Carmelo during this difficult time for him and his family," Nuggets executive vice president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri said. "It is heartbreaking news, particularly during the holiday season."
There is no indication on how many games Melo will miss.
The San Antonio Spurs hope to extend their current winning streak to 10 games tonight when they face the Denver Nuggets at the AT&T Center.
The current win streak, though, shouldn't be as Carmelo Anthony hit what looked like a game winning shot near the free throw line when the teams matched up on Thursday, December 16. The shot went down, but so did free flopping Manu Ginobili and Melo was called with one of the most ridiculous charge calls in the history of the NBA, as the Spurs held on for a 113-112 victory.
The Nuggets are hoping that Chauncey Billups, Kenyon Martin and the Birdman, Chris Andersen, will be in action tonight. All three are coming off injuries, with Billups nursing a wrist injury, Bird a lower back fracture and Martin off-season knee surgery.
Nuggets coach George Karl is confident that Billups will see time, while he lists K-Mart and Bird as game time decisions.
If the two forwards can play, they would be a welcomed sight for Nene and Shelden Williams, both of whom have been playing lots of minutes in their absence. It would also help the Nuggets better their interior defense, something which has plagued them throughout the season.
The Suprs are led in scoring by Ginobili, rebounding by Tim Duncan and assists by Tony Parker. They can also rely on Richard Jefferson for double digit scoring, and if healthy George Hill to help contribute.
A win would mark the second time this season the Spurs (24-3) have had double digit win streaks.
Tip is tonight at 6:30 p.m. MT and can be seen on Altitude TV.
