George Karl: Kenyon Martin 'Has Chance' To Play On Wednesday

The Denver Post’s Benjamin Hochman reports that George Karl believes several injured players may be able to play in Wednesday’s upcoming game against the San Antonio Spurs. Those three players are point guard Chauncey Billups and forwards Chris Andersen and Kenyon Martin. However, Karl makes it sound as though only Billups has an actual chance at playing on Wednesday.

Billups has been out for the last three games, giving Ty Lawson the starting gig temporarily. Lawson has averaged 18.0 points and 7.3 assists over that span.

Chris Andersen has missed the last eight games with a back injury.

Kenyon Martin has missed the entire season so far, recovering from knee surgery. The Nuggets will need his (and Andersen’s) presence around the backboards to grab rebounds, something Kevin Love showed immense skill at last night against the team.

When Andersn and Martin return over the next week or two, Shelden Williams will experience further cuts into his playing time. Williams will no longer start if Martin goes without a setback.

Timberwolves Vs. Nuggets: Denver Defeats Minnesota, 115-113, Despite Kevin Love's Career-High 43 Points

The Denver Nuggets escaped with a 115-113 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, who stayed in the game due to Kevin Love's outstanding performance. Love scored a career-high 43 points in the loss, going 5-of-5 from beyond the arc. Love also added 17 rebounds (seven offensive). As a team, the T'Wolves outscored the Nuggets 38-27.

The Nuggets' answer to Love on Saturday night was Ty Lawson, who continues to start with Chauncey Billups sidelined by an injured wrist. Lawson scored 23 points, made nine assists and had three steals. He was second in scoring behind Carmelo Anthony, who scored 24 points. Anthony grabbed seven boards, made four assists and blocked three shots. Arron Afflalo chipped in 17 points, while Nene had a quiet night offensively (six points) but made six rebounds and had two steals.

The Nuggets received solid help off the bench from Al Harrington (15 points, four rebounds) and J.R. Smith 18 points, four rebounds, three assists).

In addition to Love's effort, Minnesota received a strong second half from Michael Beasley. Beasley had zero points on eight shots in the first half, but finished with 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocks. He had a 42-point game earlier this season against the Sacramento Kings.

The Denver Nuggets are now 12- at home and 16-10 overall. They visit the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday, Dec. 22 at 6:30 p.m. MT before a Christmas Day game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Timberwolves Vs. Nuggets: Denver Holds 62-50 Lead As Kevin Love Keeps On Going

The Denver Nuggets lead the Minnesota Timberwolves, 62-50, at halftime. Three Nuggets starters are already in double digits for points. Carmelo Anthony leads with 14 points, followed by Arron Afflalo’s 12 and Ty Lawson’s 10. Lawson has added six assists and two steals. He has been making the most of his extended playing time with Chauncey Billups out.

Off the bench, Al Harrington has contributed 11 points, and J.R. Smith has added nine points and four rebounds.

Anthony, Afflalo and Nene each have three fouls already.

Minnesota’s Kevin Love continues his strong play this season, just one rebound short of a double-double. He has 18 points and nine rebounds (five offensive). The closest scorer for Minnesota is Martell Webster with eight points off the bench.

Michael Beasley has zero points and is 0-of-8 from the field. As a team, Minnesota is shooting 38.3 percent from the field, while the Nuggets are shooting 48.7.
