Al Harrington has proven to be a strong asset coming off the bench for the Denver Nuggets early on this season. Tonight against the Houston Rockets, Harrington put up a double-double (28 points, 10 rebounds). Harrington was 5-of-8 on three-point attempts. No wonder George Karl preferred Harrington coming off the bench.
Carmelo Anthony put 24 points up and made four rebounds and four assists. Nene also added a double-double, putting 12 points and 12 rebounds. Shelden Williams continues to contribute on the defensive side of things, picking up eight rebounds (two offensive). As a team the Nuggets shot 37.8 percent.
For the Houston Rockets, power forward Luis Scola recorded 28 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin Martin added 21 points, four rebounds and four assists. Yao Ming had 14 points and 6 rebounds. The Rockets shot 45.7% as a team in the loss.
The Denver Nuggets are now 2-1 on the season, while the Houston Rockets fell to 0-3.
The Denver Nuggets ended the third quarter with a 7-0 run to take a 72-69 lead. Carmelo Anthony has 19 points at the end of the third quarter, behind only Luis Scola’s 20. All Harrington had 18 points off the bench for the Nuggets.
The Houston Rockets are half way to a victory tonight over the Denver Nuggets, leading 51-48 at halftime. Despite a solid 15 points from Carmelo Anthony, the Nuggets have been able to take the lead. Anthony has only one rebound at halftime. Al Harrington is the second-leading scorer for the Nuggets, adding 11 points and four rebounds off the bench. Shelden Williams continues to pick up the rebounds, gaining seven rebounds. He also has two steals and a block.
The Nuggets have been unable to find a solution to Houston’s Kevin Martin and Luis Scola, the two combining to score 24 points. Yao Ming has eight points, five rebounds and two blocks.
The Rockets have dropped back-to-back road games to the Lakers and Warriors to kick off the new season, matching the 0-2 start by the 2004-05 squad. They haven't started a season with three straight losses since kicking off the 1999-00 season with five consecutive defeats.
"We ran up against a good offensive team and they shot the ball lights out," said Houston guard Aaron Brooks, who finished with 13 points and seven assists. "We could have played better defense but credit to them, they were feeling it. At times we broke down but they just made shots."
In injury news for the Rockets, guard Kyle Lowry is listed as questionable for Saturday's game due to back spasms. Houston is back at home for two games versus the Nuggets and New Orleans Hornets.
Denver opened the new season with a home win versus Utah, but suffered a 101-95 loss at New Orleans Friday night.
Despite his request to be traded, Carmelo Anthony scored 24 points and grabbed 10 boards to lead the Nuggets, who already have a three-year, $65 million extension on the table for the former Syracuse star. Anthony wants to be dealt to an east coast team such as the Knicks, Nets or Bulls.
"We did pretty well, but we made too many mistakes late in the game; too many turnovers in the fourth quarter," said Denver head coach George Karl, who is back on the bench after a bout with neck and throat cancer. "They scored almost 30 points off our mistakes. We didn't rebound with a passion on offense. We tried to make too many tough shots. In general, we put up a pretty good fight for a road game."
The Nuggets won two of three meetings with Houston last season and has lost five of six trips to the Toyota Center. The Rockets are 10-6 in the last 16 meetings with Denver.
