Caleb Hanie, Brock Osweiler Lead Backup QB Spot For Peyton Manning-Led Broncos

During Peyton Manning's career with the Indianapolis Colts, the backup quarterback spot on the roster was mostly filled by unknown players since the signal caller was always playing. Then when he missed the 2011 season due to a neck injury, Manning had to give way to his backups, which resulted in a huge disaster for the team.

Now, in 2012, the Denver Broncos are dealing with a similar situation. They have Manning ready to play under center, but his backups are less than stellar. Caleb Hanie returned home to Colorado from the Chicago Bears, where he replaced Jay Cutler after he went down with a thumb injury. Adam Weber is the only holdover from 2011 and Brock Osweiler is a rookie who needs plenty of work to become a starter in a few years.

Sports Illustrated's Peter King sees the backup competition mostly between Hanie and Osweiler and the likely backups to make the roster; however, Weber shouldn't be counted out. There's nothing radical here, and there's little doubt that Osweiler won't be on the Opening Night roster. Weber, most likely, will spend another year on the practice squad.
