Brian Dawkins Retirement: Long-Time Eagles Safety Remarks On Career, Future During Press Conference

S Brian Dawkins, officially retiring as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles this coming Saturday, spoke with the Denver Broncos media on Tuesday. Among his remarks, Dawkins expressed appreciation towards S Mike Adams, who will wear Dawkins' jersey No. 20 in the upcoming season, as well as appreciation for new Broncos QB Peyton Manning, whom Dawkins praised for his knowledge of the game.

Dawkins also spoke briefly on his future, saying he would not take the typical post-NFL route:

Dawkins also served as a representative of the NFL Players Association, but will have step down upon his retirement. Asked as to who he thought would replace him on the NFLPA Executive Committee, Dawkins refused to tip his hand. He also discussed his one Super Bowl appearance, saying it would be the only game he would change if he could.

Asked about his decision to live in Denver after his retirement, Dawkins claimed to be as surprised as the fans:

And was it the slopes that kept him in Colorado? Probably not:

Brian Dawkins Retirement: Broncos Head Coach John Fox Lauds "One Of The Best Ever"

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox only coached Brian Dawkins for one season, but as NFL lifers, their paths crossed many more times before that. Fox's admiration and respect for Dawkins as he leaves his playing days behind is evident in the statement that Fox released on Monday morning.

Here is the statement in full:

"Brian Dawkins is one of the best to ever play the game, a future Hall of Famer who changed the way his position is played. In many ways, he helped my job as a coach with his great leadership and preparation. He brought so much to the table and was such an enormous asset to our football team. His contributions go far beyond the wins, interceptions, sacks and Pro Bowls he accumulated during his career. Brian is the definition of class and is what you want in a leader. I know our players, coaches, fans & many within the NFL feel the same. I competed against Brian for many years with the Giants and coached him once in the Pro Bowl, but to be around him every day for a season was truly special. I'm not sure there was a more respected guy in our building than Brian. He knows defense, he knows football and he knows what it takes to win. I've got the utmost admiration for him as both a player and person. It's been an honor and a privilege to coach Brian. Although I will miss the positive impact he had on our team, I congratulate Brian on a tremendous career and wish him and his family all the best going forward."

Brian Dawkins Retires: 'Major Press Conference' Expected Soon, According To Report

Denver Broncos safety Brian Dawkins has announced his retirement from the NFL, but don't expect the team to let this fade away in the lead up to the 2012 NFL Draft later this week. We should expect a press conference in the next day or two, reports the Denver Post's Mike Klis:

This news shouldn't change how the Broncos approach the draft at the end of the week. The team already brought in Mike Adams through free agency to shore up the safety position. Also, the Broncos have been expected to draft a safety at some point in proceedings because Dawkins' retirement -- either this season, as it turned out, or one year later -- has been a topic of discussion since the end of the 2011 season.
