2012 NFL Draft: Broncos Receive 0 Compensatory Picks; Raiders Gain 3

The Denver Broncos didn't receive any extra draft picks when compensatory awards were announced on Monday afternoon. The Kansas City Chiefs were the only other AFC West team to fail to pick up extra draft choices this way.

The Oakland Raiders picked up three selections: one in the third round, one in the fourth and one in the fifth. The Raiders' third-round choice is the only one to appear there. The San Diego Chargers received an extra seventh-round pick.

These were the players the Raiders and the Chargers lost in 2011:

OAKLAND

Lost:

Nnamdi Asomugha, Robert Gallery, Bruce Gradkowski, Zach Miller, Thomas Howard

Signed:

Kevin Boss, Stephen Heyer

SAN DIEGO

Lost:

Kevin Burnett, Darren Sproles

Signed:

Travis LaBoy, Takeo Spikes

The NFL explains how it rewards compensatory draft choices:

Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four.

Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.

The Broncos will almost certainly receive compensatory picks in 2013 for losing Brodrick Bunkley, Daniel Fells and Spencer Larson.
