The San Francisco 49ers have emerged late as the "mystery team" pursuing free agent quarterback Peyton Manning. The team had been whispered as a team early during this whole process, but apparently it's been much more than that lately:

According to Adam Schefter on SportsCenter, Manning had a workout at Duke for the 49ers on Tuesday and then took a physical on Wednesday. However, Manning has not visited San Francisco's facilities.
Manning to the 49ers remains a long shot, but the team has an opening at the position since Alex Smith has not reached a new deal with the club. The 49ers provide the best chance for Manning to win a Super Bowl, especially with a defense, one of the best in 2011, returns all 11 starters.
