The Denver Broncos made one of the biggest splashes in the NFL during the offseason by adding future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning and trading away Tim Tebow, but there are still plenty of questions about the moves will all come together in the upcoming season. Cantor Gaming became the first Nevada bookmaker to release NFL season win total odds, and the Broncos are listed as favorites over the Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers in the AFC West.
The line for the Broncos is set at 9.5 wins, and sportsbook director Mike Colbert thinks their tough schedule will hold them back, as he told Covers.com:
"There's [a] team with an absolutely brutal schedule. I don't think Denver will win more than 9, and surely don't think they'll win 11. I really think 9 is better than 9.5, but with a 10 out there [on an offshore betting site] we don't have to go that low."
As for the rest of the AFC West, the Chargers have their line set at 9 wins, the Chiefs are listed at 8 wins and the Raiders are sitting at 7 wins. Here are the odds, via Covers.com:
Denver Broncos
Over 9.5 wins -110
Under 9.5 wins -120
San Diego Chargers
Over 9 wins -130
Under 9 wins Even
Kansas City Chiefs
Over 8 wins -120
Under 8 wins -110
Oakland Raiders
Over 7 wins -110
Under 7 wins -120

The Denver Broncos are the defending AFC West champs, and they added a future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning in the offseason, so now San Diego Chargers general manager A.J. Smith is making sure to pay proper deference to Denver during the offseason. Smith knows the division race will be tough once again in the upcoming NFL season, and he explained the challenge to Kevin Acee and Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego:
"As far as the division race is concerned, I know this, it will be very difficult to win the West. The Broncos are defending champs, and they added Peyton Manning. The Raiders and the Chiefs are much better. The Broncos are led by one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. I just hope the Broncos don't run away with the division and leave the rest of us behind in the dust."
Aside from the addition of Manning, the Broncos have also brought in former New Orleans Saints CB Tracy Porter and ex-Buffalo Bills corner Drayton Florence to play behind Von Miller and company up front on the defensive side of the ball. The AFC West race came down to the final weeks last season, but Manning and the Broncos are hoping they've done enough to make it a more comfortable push to the finish line this year.

Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller has been named the Colorado Athlete of the Year by the Denver Athletic Club, as Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post reports. Miller was a breakout star for Denver in 2011 as he made the Pro Bowl during his rookie season.
As part of the award, which has also been given to Colorado sports legends like John Elway and Todd Helton, Miller will be honored at a banquet on June 15. According to the Denver Athletic Club, the award is presented to a local athlete who, "has made significant contributions on the field and in the community."
In 2011, Miller quickly emerged as one of the league's most impressive defensive players after being drafted with the second overall pick in the draft. Starting all 15 games that he appeared in, Miller recorded 51 tackles, 11.5 sacks and three forced fumbles while being named to the AP All-NFL Second Team.

The biggest change between the 2011 Denver Broncos and the 2012 edition of the team is, of course, very obvious. The signing of eventual Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning rightfully got most of the attention this offseason, but the Broncos also overhauled their secondary in order to solidify the team around its prized free agent acquisition.
John Elway and the rest of the Denver front office brought in ex-New Orleans Saints Super Bowl hero Tracy Porter as well as longtime Buffalo Bills corner Drayton Florence. The new look secondary has already been lauded after the first few days of OTAs.
"We've got three great cover corners to work against,'' Manning said this week as the Broncos began their first full practices of the offseason. "... I mean, if you can't get better going against some of these top cover corners, then it's just not meant to be.''

For the first time in the NFL's history, players will be required to wear knee and thigh pads as a part of their uniform. During the player interviews at the Denver Broncos Organized Team Activities on Tuesday, several players were asked their opinions on the new set of rules. CB Tracy Porter is apparently fine with the rule change, as he will not need to change anything:
"I believe in them, I’ve been wearing them since my rookie year," Porter said. "A lot of guys they’re frowning upon it because they like to not wear the thigh or knee pads. But much like wearing shoulder pads and a helmet. It’s a rule in the league and you have to do it."
But DT Justin Bannan, who does not typically play with knee and thigh guards, finds the rule unnecessary:
"It’s great for high school kids and college kids," Bannan said. "I think if you’re going to have an injury happen, a knee pad or a thigh pad is not going to save you."
The NFL instituted the rule in their on-going effort to improve player safety.

A large group of Denver Broncos fans might not have been immensely happy when Tim Tebow got traded to the New York Jets, but his replacement being Peyton Manning seems to be a big boost to the players right now as the Broncos OTA's go along.
The Broncos had several media interviews, mostly with new players, on Tuesday and let all of the developments be known on their twitter account. Among the best tidbits was during the interview with safety Mike Adams, who said that he was very happy to have Peyton Manning on his side. The Broncos made sure to note that it wasn't just Adams saying that:
One phrase continues to get repeated in regards to QB Peyton Manning. Adams: "I'm just glad he's on my team."

The Denver Broncos momentarily became the epicenter of the sports world this offseason when the team signed future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning in free agency and traded fan favorite Tim Tebow to the New York Jets. The Broncos opened up voluntary OTA workouts on Monday and Manning got to test his arm strength -- likely the biggest concern facing the quarterback as he enters the 2012 season.
Here's what Manning had to say about the state of his throwing power:
"It's hard to say. I try to get better every day. That's my goal. I really need to use this time. I do think there's a difference when you are on the field, in helmets, going up against the defense. Up until now we haven't been able to go against a defense, so this will be great work for me. This was one step, and there are different phases; training camp will be your next phase, putting on shoulder pads, then preseason and regular season. I'm just taking it one day at a time, but I was excited for this day to get here."

Denver Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno had his season cut short by a torn ACL last year. The Georgia product seemed positioned for a big third season, but the knee injury limited him to only 179 yards rushing on 37 attempts.
As Denver begins OTA workouts, Broncos fans will be relieved to know Moreno is back on the football field.

— Lindsay Jones (@PostBroncos) May 21, 2012
The Broncos actually finished first in rushing yards per game without Moreno last year, averaging over 164 yards per contest on the ground. Some of that was due to the running acumen of departed quarterback Tim Tebow, but Denver's stable of other running backs also upped their game. Willis McGahee, who turns 31 in October, will return in 2012. He led the Broncos with 1,199 rushing last year.

The Denver Broncos held the first day of OTA workouts for 2012, and though the focus is all on Peyton Manning, several key members of the team were missing in action today. Among the notables were kicker Matt Prater, defensive tackles Ty Warren and Derek Wolfe and linebacker DJ Williams.
According to the Denver Post's Mike Klis, Wolfe, Denver's first pick in the 2012 draft, is back in Ohio waiting to graduate from the University of Cincinnati, but will be with the team once he signs his contract. Williams is currently in court for his lawsuit against the NFL regarding his six-game suspension due to a failed drug test. Warren and Prater meanwhile are still stuck in contract negotiations with the franchise, and both may end up missing this year's OTA altogether.

The Denver Broncos may have a brewing -- and uncommon -- controversy in their special teams department. According to The Denver Post, kicker Matt Prater is skipping the team's offseason workouts. The Broncos placed the franchise tag on their long-time place kicker this offseason, an action for which the kicker did not particularly express gratitude.
But according to Prater's agent, skipping the OTAs is not meant as a message to the Broncos leadership:
"There’s no message, it’s voluntary," said Frank Bauer, Prater’s agent.
And since he has not yet signed the franchise tender, Prater would additionally need to sign a waiver to participate in the OTAs:
Matt Prater not reporting to offseason workouts not a surprise. He'd have to sign a waiver to work out there at all. #Broncos
— BroncoTalk (@BroncoTalk) May 15, 2012
The 28-year-old Prater owns a 78.4% field goal percentage, including an impressive 10 for 13 from beyond 50 yards.

On Monday afternoon, Denver Broncos defensive line coach Wayne Nunnely announced his retirement from coaching. Nunnely worked in coaching for 36 years, 17 of which were in the NFL.
"It has been an absolute dream come true for me to coach for 36 years," Nunnely said in a statement. "I am so thankful for all the opportunities I have been given to have a positive impact on others through the game of football. More than anything, I am proud of the accomplishments of the teams and players I have been so privileged to work with over the years."
Nunnely was the DL coach in Denver from 2009-2011. Prior to that, he spent 12 years with the Chargers.

Denver Broncos veteran defensive tackle Ty Warren hasn't been on the field to prove to the organization that he's worth his base salary of $4 million in the 2012 season, so the Broncos have approached Warren, along with Kevin Vickerson about accepting pay cuts.
Vickerson is down with it, because refusing to take the pay cut could very well result in him being released, which means no pay at all. Warren hasn't been so accepting, despite missing the past two seasons due to injury.
According to the Denver Post, Vickerson accepted a deal that drops his salary from $2.25 million to $1.2 million. The Broncos want Warren's salary to drop from $4 million to around $1 million to $1.5 million, according to the Post report.
Both Warren and Vickerson suffered season-ending injuries last season, and the Broncos addressed their needs at defensive tackle over the offseason with the free-agent signing of Justin Bannan and the selection of Derek Wolfe in the NFL Draft, making the two veterans more expendable.

The Denver Broncos signed free agent cornerback Drayton Florence on Thursday afternoon, and on Friday morning they continued with roster moves as they waived defensive lineman Jeremy Jarmon.
The Broncos have waived DL Jeremy Jarmon.
— Denver Broncos (@Denver_Broncos) May 11, 2012
Jarmon was drafted by the Washington Redskins with a third-round pick in the 2009 NFL Supplemental Draft, but he only recorded eight solo tackles, four assists and one forced fumble in 16 games with Washington over two seasons in 2009 and 2010. The 24-year-old, 278-pound DL never played a regular season snap for the Broncos, so it's hard to have a strong opinion about the roster move in this case.

The Denver Broncos announced on Thursday afternoon that they have agreed to terms with free agent cornerback Drayton Florence:

Florence received his release from the Buffalo Bills, where he spent the last three years, in early May and immediately drew interest from his old team, the San Diego Chargers, and the Tennessee Titans in addition to the Broncos.
With Champ Bailey and free-agent signing Tracy Porter starting, the 31-year-old Florence is likely to emerge as the nickel cornerback. Chris Harris played there as a rookie, but Florence, despite struggles in 2011, should enter camp as the favorite to play there.

On Tuesday, former Denver Broncos cornerback Andre' Goodman visited the Tennessee Titans, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. The Broncos released Goodman back in April after three years and 40 starts for the team, and now the free agent CB is looking to catch on with the Titans. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound defensive back is a former third-round pick of the Detroit Lions in the 2002 NFL Draft (pick No. 68 overall), and he has recorded 19 interceptions in his 10-year NFL career.
Last season Goodman made some big plays for the Broncos, including an interception return for a touchdown against the New York Jets and a game-clinching INT against Christian Ponder and the Minnesota Vikings.

The Denver Broncos may be offering a reunion between QB Petyon Manning and WR Brandon Stokley, but a reunion featuring another former member of the Indianapolis Colts -- RB Joseph Addai -- will not likely happen in 2012. According to Colts beat writer Mike Chappell, Manning informed the media himself that Addai would be signing with the New England Patriots:

— Mike Chappell (@mchappell51) May 5, 2012
Rumors had suggested earlier during the offseason that the Broncos might pursue Addai, but with RB Willis McGahee still on the roster and 3rd-round pick RB Ronnie Hillman joining the team via the draft, the Broncos appear to be content with their in-house options.

The Denver Broncos just lost Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins to retirement this week, and even though they had reportedly shown some interest in acquiring Philadelphia Eagles defensive back Asante Samuel last week, Denver is no longer considered a viable destination for the 31-year-old playmaker. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Broncos are not expected to trade for Asante Samuel.
The former fourth-round pick (No. 120 overall) in the 2003 NFL Draft has made four Pro Bowls and one First-Team All-Pro squad, but he still had two years and $21.5M left on his contract and hasn't started all 16 games in a season since 2009. The Denver Broncos have shown an interest in acquiring Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel, according to Mike Klis of the Denver Post. While the two sides have talked about two potential scenarios that would bring the star cornerback to Denver, Klis says the Broncos are no longer optimistic about finishing off a deal.
Samuel, 31, has emerged as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL since being drafted by New England in 2003. The four-time Pro Bowler has spent the past four seasons playing in Philadelphia since signing a six-year contract with the team back in 2008.
Over the past six seasons, Samuel has intercepted 39 passes while earning his reputation as a defensive playmaker. He still has two years on his deal worth a total of $21.5 million, but Klis says that the contract would likely be re-structured if a trade occurred given that none of the money is guaranteed.

Denver Broncos defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson played in four games during the 2011 season before an ankle injury ended his campaign prematurely. He is expected to be back in the defensive tackle rotation in 2012, but he will be doing it under a restructured contract, according to Mac's Football Blog:
Originally scheduled to earn $2.1 million with a $400,000 roster bonus as part of his two-year, $5 million extension, Vickerson's roster bonus has been deleted and his base salary has been reduced to $1.2 million for the 2012 season. The adjustment reduces Vickerson's 2012 cap number by $1.3 million.
Vickerson joins a pool of defensive tackles that includes Ty Warren (recovering from his own injury that kept him out for all of 2011), Justin Bannan and Mitch Unrein. Ryan McBean had his restricted free agent tender rescinded the other day, making him a free agent. Last year's starters, Marcus Thomas and Brodrick Bunkley, are no longer with the team. Bunkley signed with the New Orleans Saints while Thomas is still on the free market. He reportedly has a one-year deal on the table with the Broncos, but it waiting until after the draft to sign with a team.

The Denver Broncos are heavily favored to draft a defensive tackle in the first round of next week's 2012 NFL Draft or possibly look for a value defensive tackle in the second round, but either way that would severely diminish the chances of re-signing defensive tackle Marcus Thomas, one would think. Whatever happens, Thomas is unlikely to make his decision until after the draft plays out, reports the Denver Post's Mike Klis.
Barring a sweetened offer in next week, FA DT Marcus Thomas will wait till after draft. Can better evaluate playing-time situation that way.

Thomas is only receiving one-year offers to play under during the 2012 season and he won't know his best situation until after the draft.
If this is the year the Broncos do draft a defensive tackle, Thomas is likely looking to leave the Rocky Mountains.

It's reunion time in the Mile High City with the Denver Broncos bringing back wide receiver Brandon Stokley on a one-year deal, according to the NFL Network's Jason La Canfora.
Brandon Stokley has reunited with Peyton Manning - Stokley has a 1yr deal with Denver
— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) April 16, 2012
This move has been anticipated ever since the Broncos signed quarterback Peyton Manning. Stokley was a teammate of Manning's from 2003-2006 with the Indianapolis Colts, posting a career-best 68 catches for 1,077 yards and 10 touchdown passes on 2004.
Stokley moved on to the Broncos for the 207-2009 seasons before playing with the Seattle Seahawks in 2010 and for the New York Giants in 2011 (just one game). Stokley, who turns 36 in late June, lives in Denver and worked out with Peyton Manning back in March at a local park.
The corresponding roster move for signing Stokley came earlier on Monday when the team rescinded its restricted free agent tender on Ryan McBean, who has been suspended by the league for a failed drug test.

Ex-Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Stokley was reportedly instrumental in luring Peyton Manning to the Mile High City, and now, according to the Denver Post's Mike Klis, Stokley will meet with the Broncos about the possibility of joining Manning on the playing field. Stokley, who is 36 years old, caught a single pass for seven yards for the New York Giants in 2011, and last was with the Broncos in 2009.

The Denver Broncos have been working to build depth around star quarterback Peyton Manning, and now the team is bringing in one of his favorite receivers for a recruitment visit. Free agent wide receiver Brandon Stokley is on the Broncos' radar and will be brought in for a visit, according to Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network. Stokley and Manning teamed up in Indianapolis for four consecutive seasons, and the 35-year-old WR hit career highs as a Colt in 2004 with 68 receptions, 1,077 yards and 10 touchdowns.
The receiving corps for Denver is headlined by younger players like Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, Andre Caldwell and Jason Hill, so Stokley would provide some experience and veteran leadership as a situational slot receiver and a familiar outlet for Manning when things go wrong. Even so, Stokley has not caught a TD pass since 2009 (as a member of the Broncos) and had just one reception for seven yards last season with the New York Giants.

Maybe it's Tim Tebow time for HBO, because the Denver Broncos "flat out denied" HBO's Hard Knocks offer to film the team's 2012 offseason and preseason with Peyton Manning, according to Adam Schein of FOX Sports. Then again, Rex Ryan is apparently against having the show return to Jets training camp, so maybe Tebow is out of the picture as well. Schein reports that the network reached out to the Broncos first, presumably because Peyton Manning has come to town and expectations are high, but Denver turned them down right off the bat.
Jets owner Woody Johnson reportedly wants his team back on the hit HBO show and would love to grab headlines from the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants, but Ryan thinks it would be a distraction and is pushing back. If the network can't land the Jets, Schein says the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens could be next on the list. The Jacksonville Jaguars have declared their interest in being the subject of the series, but that hasn't gotten the attention of HBO at this point.

The Denver Broncos have brought back a familiar player on Wednesday morning, signing defensive tackle Justin Bannan:
The #Broncos have signed DL Justin Bannan.
— Denver Broncos (@Denver_Broncos) April 11, 2012
Bannan previously played for Broncos during the 2010 season, picking up 35 combined tackles and one sack. He was released on March 3, 2011, along with Jamal Williams. Bannan went to the St. Louis Rams for the 2011 season and put up similar numbers to those he had in Denver.
Bannan joins a group of defensive tackles that includes Ty Warren, Kevin Vickerson, Ryan McBean and Mitch Unrein -- hardly a stellar cast there. Warren is injury-prone and missed the first year of his two-year contract. Vickerson played in a handful of games before injury did him in. Brodrick Bunkley left through free agency for the New Orleans Saints, and Marcus Thomas is also expected to sign elsewhere.
Bannan played his college football for the Colorado Buffaloes.

Colquitt was seventh in the NFL last season with an average yards per punt of 47.4 and he was second in the league with 33 punts downed inside the 20-yard-line. After going undrafted and bouncing around the practice squads of both the Broncos and the Miami Dolphins, Denver signed Colquitt in 2010 and he has punted in every game for the team since then.

Free agent defensive end William Hayes has scheduled visits with the St. Louis Rams and Denver Broncos, according to Terry McCormick of TitanInsider.com, but Jeff Fisher and the Rams may have an advantage in the recruiting process. The Tennessee Titans drafted Hayes in the fourth-round (No. 103 overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft, and the 26-year old played his best football under Jeff Fisher when he recorded four sacks and 30 tackles as the starting left defensive end in 2009.
On Monday, Broncos general manager Brian Xanders told KKFN-FM 104.3 the team is still fielding calls from free agents inquiring about playing for league-minimum salaries, so perhaps if Hayes wants a new start and a new defensive system he can get that in Denver. However, if he wants to reunite with Jeff Fisher, it seems unlikely that the Broncos would outbid the Rams.

The 2012 NFL Draft is a little over three weeks away from taking place, and many teams are certainly all-in with draft preparations, but the Denver Broncos are certainly looking to see if they want to sign any guys who are willing to play for the league minimum, according to general manager Brian Xanders (via CBS Sports):
GM Brian Xanders told KKFN-FM 104.3 in Denver that the Broncos are focused on draft preparation, but haven't shut the door on free agency and are still fielding calls from free agents inquiring about playing for league-minimum salaries. "We're not done yet," Xanders said. "It's been a very busy time."
As the Denver Post's Jeff Legwold points out on Monday, the team has spent most of its cap space with the addition of Peyton Manning, safety Mike Adams and tight ends Joel Dreessen and Jacob Tamme.

The Denver Broncos may have made the biggest statement during free agency with the signing of quarterback Peyton Manning and the trading of Tim Tebow to the New York Jets. They are still attempting to finalize their team for the upcoming 2012 season and look like they have a healthy amount of wiggle room in available funds.
Jason La Canfora of NFL.com recently ran down the salary cap situations of each NFL team as of March 30. Here is what the Broncos are looking like as free agency continues and the 2012 NFL Draft draws closer.
Denver Broncos
Current contracts: 46
Previous year carryover: $26,000,000.00
Adjustments: $635,894.00
Adjusted cap: $147,235,894.00
Team cap: $133,433,373.00
Cap room: $13,802,521.00
Team cash: $104,922,133.36
The team still looks to be in great shape for the remainder of free agency and the 2012 NFL Draft, with nearly $14 million in cap room remaining to assemble some final pieces around Manning.

The Denver Broncos made the biggest splash of the 2012 NFL offseason by signing free agent quarterback Peyton Manning, a game-changing move for this storied franchise. But that's not the only move Sports Illustrated's Peter King is praising the Broncos for. In his latest Monday Morning Quarterback column, King praises the addition of cornerback Tracy Porter:
This is a very solid first move, bringing in a better corner than two (Eric Wright, Aaron Ross) who got richer first-week contracts. The only X factor with any former Saint, however, concerns the bounty investigation, and whether any players will be suspended. We don't know whether Porter was involved, and whether he'll face any discipline.
And on Jacob Tamme:
A Peyton Manning security blanket, obviously. Check out Tamme's catches in the last 10 games of the Colts' season in 2010: 6, 11, 7, 7, 7, 4, 4, 7, 7, 7. Think Manning's happy to have Tamme in the fold?
Porter ranks No. 1 and Tamme No. 5 on King's list of top free agency moves outside of Peyton Manning, giving the Broncos three of the best acquisitions this offseason. Porter will play opposite Champ Bailey, helping defend the half of the field the Broncos have received sub-par to decent play over the last few years. The addition of Tamme also makes up for the last few years of mediocre tight end play.
But the Broncos' success in 2012 really does depend on Manning's health.

The Denver Broncos have already signed Caleb Hanie to presumably be Peyton Manning's backup should Plan A fall through, but there now also appears there might be a Plan C or a challenge to Plan B. Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dennis Dixon and the Broncos have talked over the weekend, according to ESPN's Bill Williamson.
Dixon backed up Ben Roethlisberger for the last four seasons. He started the first two games of the 2010 season and one late during the 2009 season. He's an athletic quarterback who is definitely more mobile than Peyton Manning, but, again, John Elway is planning on Peyton Manning passing the ball for the entire season. The whole "I only have Plan A" rhetoric is fine, but as we see it's not put in practice

The Denver Broncos have been busy adding weapons on offense to surround new quarterback Peyton Manning, and on Friday morning they agreed to terms with tight end Joel Dreessen, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle andVic Lombardi of CBS4 Denver. Dreessen faced a choice between re-signing with the Houston Texans or bolting for moving to the Denver Broncos, and he chose to hook up with Peyton Manning. The move represents a bit of a homecoming for Dreeseen, who played college football for the Colorado St. Rams before being drafted in the sixth-round (No. 198 overall) in the 2005 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.
Dreessen played the past five seasons with the Texans and has amassed 110 receptions for 1,364 yards and 13 touchdowns since entering the NFL. The 6'4", 260-pound blocking tight end turns 30 in July, but he gives Manning a solid red-zone option and can stay in as an extra pass protector when needed. The only remaining question is whether the Broncos will still pursue Dallas Clark, one of Manning's favorite targets back in Indianapolis, as well.

The Denver Broncos have agreed to a one-year contract with free agent cornerback Tracy Porter, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. The move continues the Broncos' efforts to re-load for a major championship run under new quarterback Peyton Manning.
ESPN's Bill Williamson reports that the deal is worth $4 million, and he also says that Porter will be the starting cornerback opposite Champ Bailey for the Broncos next season. Over the past three years, Porter has been primarily a starter for the New Orleans Saints after they drafted him in 2008.
Injuries have prevented Porter from ever playing 16 games in a season, though. He's started 34 games over the past three years, recording at least 45 tackles in each season, but he's only had one interception in each of the past two seasons after recording three picks in 2009.

The Denver Broncos are a day away from finding out TE Joel Dreessen's decision concerning the 2012 season. According Jeff Legwold of The Denver Post, Dreessen is expected to announce his destination on Friday morning:

Dreessen, who turns 30 in the 212 season, has played part-time starter and pass-catching tight end for the Houston Texans over the last three seasons, and he has accumulated 1191 yards since 2009 and caught 11 TDs -- good for 19th best in the league during that three-year span.

The Denver Broncos are in desperate need for wide receiver depth now that Peyton Manning is on board, and on Wednesday afternoon they agreed to terms on a two-year deal with former Cincinnati Bengals WR Andre Caldwell. The 26-year old wideout was drafted by Cincinnati in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft (97th overall), and has recorded 124 receptions for 1,172 yards and six touchdowns in his four-year NFL career.
The Broncos sent a seventh-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft along with Tim Tebow to the Jets in exchange for 2012 fourth-round and sixth-round picks from New York, but the Tebow ties live on with Caldwell, who was Tebow's teammate and one of his favorite targets at the University of Florida in 2006 and 2007.
The team also agreed to terms with free agent linebacker Wesley Woodyard and offensive guard Manny Ramirez amid all of the Manning and Tebow chaos. Woodyard recorded 60 solo tackles and 30 assists in six starts (15 games played) during 2011.

The New Orleans Saints have signed defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley to a five-year, $25 million contract that guarantees him $9 million, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Bunkley will help to anchor the Saints' defensive line as they hope to make a run despite the punishments laid down recently by the NFL.
Bunkley, 28, played five seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles before spending last season with the Denver Broncos. A first-round pick out of Florida State in 2006, he's been a starter for most of his career. Starting 13 of the 16 games he played for Denver last season, Bunkley recorded 35 tackles and forced a fumble for one of the NFL's better defenses.
The Broncos were hoping to retain Bunkley's services to bulk up the defensive line, but the Saints made an aggressive offer for a player that can be quite effective in certain roles.

The Denver Broncos seemingly have interest in every former Indianapolis Colts player who was a teammate of Peyton Manning's. While no visit is scheduled yet, running back Joseph Addai could have the Broncos' eye, according to the Denver Post's Jeff Legwold.
Addai had two good seasons when he first entered the league in 2006 and 2007, rushing for over 1,000 years each year. Since then his best season came in 2009 when he rushed for 828 yards and 10 touchdowns. He's also been used as a pass catcher, grabbing a career-high 51 balls in 2009.

With Peyton Manning on-board, the Denver Broncos are now full steam ahead at surrounding one of the biggest investments in franchise history with the best possible team. Denver will host both ex-Pittsburgh Steeler and ex-Manning teammate Jacob Tamme today, and both would seriously upgrade two positions of need.

Gay spent the last five seasons in Pittsburgh, amassing 247 tackles and three interceptions while playing in all 80 games. Tamme was a breakout star for Manning in the Colts in 2010 after emerging from obscurity to replace an injured Dallas Clark. With Tim Tebow all but assuredly on his way out of Denver, the Denver Broncos have to address their quarterback depth behind Peyton Manning. Manning is of course coming off of four neck surgeries, and as such Denver's depth at quarterback may be more important than that of any other position for any other team in the NFL.
So, the quarterback rumors (non-Manning, non-Tebow category) will begin to fly in the Mile High City, and it all begins with ex-Chicago Bears QB Caleb Hanie, according to Jeff Dickerson of ESPN Chicago. Hanie, who played college football for the Colorado State Rams, was the primary back up to Jay Cutler in Chicago last season, but after four disastrous starts in which he compiled a quarterback rating of 41.8 he was benched and released after the season.
Hanie had a chance to shepherd the Bears into the playoffs last season, but he failed that test miserably, and he would certainly inspire little to no confidence amongst Broncos fans. But with $18 million committed to Manning next year and with other positions still to be upgraded, depth at quarterback is going to have to come on the cheap.

The Denver Broncos are going to see the fruits of signing Peyton Manningg bear soon enough, especially when it comes to Manning's former Indianapolis Colts teammates. Saturday has long been mentioned as a potential candidate for the Broncos ever since their involvement with Peyton Manning began a couple of weeks ago. He would represent an upgrade of J.D. Walton.
Tamme is not unexpected as a possible addition for the Broncos, but he wasn't the first ex-Colts tight end connected with the Broncos. That speculation began with Dallas Clark almost immediately after Clark was released last week. Tamme, though, is a young tight end who caught 67 passes for 631 yards and four touchdowns in replacing Clark during the 2010 season. Defensive tackle is a thin position on the free agent market and Bunkley may be the best player available, despite not being known to produce much of a pass rush. The San Diego Chargers lost running back Mike Tolbert to the Carolina Panthers on Monday when the free agent signed a four-year deal with Denver Broncos head coach John Fox's old team. The NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports that Tolbert has signed a four-year deal with the Panthers. That makes four running backs on the roster under contract. The others are DeAngelo Williams, Mike Goodson and Jonathan Stewart. The latter might now be the subject of trade speculation.
With Tolbert being a goal-line and short-yardage-situation running back, Stewart might find himself out of favor in Carolina. While nothing is brewing yet, it wouldn't be surprising if the team looked to trade Stewart. And John Fox might be interested in Stewart if the Panthers did pursue that route.
However, La Canfora is already shooting down that speculation and believes the team is signing a versatile player with a team-friendly contract. We'll see.

The Denver Broncos brought back Joe Mays on Sunday evening with a new contract, and all indications are that he will be the starter at middle linebacker once again. His new contract certainly makes that extremely likely since it is for three years and $12 million, reports the Denver Post's Mike Klis:

The Broncos had Jameel McClain in for a visit last week, but bringing him in looked doubtful after that. With Mays back, the linebacker corps retains its starters, but first we'll need to see what happens with D.J. Williams and his six-game suspension for a failed drug test.

How much has the Denver Broncos' pursuit of Peyton Manning forced the hand of other free agents to sign elsewhere than with the team? For Brady Quinn, it appears taking less money from the Kansas City Chiefs was better than waiting for the Broncos' pursuit of Manning to come to an end one way or another. He turned down $2 million, according to Sports Illustrated's Peter King:
How much did Brady Quinn want out of the Denver quarterback-go-round? So much, I hear, that he turned down an offer of $2 million from the Broncos and accepted a one-year, $1.5 million deal in Kansas City.
How can anyone blame Quinn not wanting to re-sign with the Broncos? Either he'd be the backup to Peyton Manning or Tim Tebow if he stayed -- or any other player brought in to compete with Tebow. With the Chiefs, Quinn might actually have a chance at seeing playing time should Matt Cassel fail to perform adequately.

According to Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald, the New England Patriots have signed ex-Denver Broncos tight end Daniel Fells to a three-year deal that will help bolster their tight end depth. Fells started 15 games for the Broncos last season, but had minimal impact in the passing game, catching only 19 passes for 256 yards. He'll join two of the best tight ends in the NFL in Boston, where he's likely to primarily be used as a blocker.
The move leaves the Broncos more or less barren at tight end, with rookie projects Virgil Green and Julius Thomas on the roster along with the talented but perennially injured Cornelius Ingram. The Broncos may decide to bring in a cheap veteran like Dallas Clark or Visanthe Shiancoe, but tight end may be a spot where the team looks to draft and develop a player this year.

Middle linebacker Joe Mays will be back in a Denver Broncos uniform in 2012, since the team has agreed to re-sign the four-year player, according the Broncos' Twitter account.
This will be the third season Mays spends with the franchise, after spending his first two seasons in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles. The terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed. Mays started in 12 games last season, while playing in all 16. He recorded 64 tackles in the 2011 season, in which the Broncos won the AFC West with a 8-8 record.

The Denver Broncos are exploring several options for a backup quarterback in the 2012 season, with Billy Volek, Vince Young and David Garrard being among the players on their list, according to Bill Williamson's report.
While the Broncos are one of the handful of teams competing in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes this off-season, the AFC West as a whole is scrambling to reshape the cosmetics of the backup quarterback position.
The San Diego Chargers cut Volek on Saturday, just a day after signing Charlie Whitehurst to a deal to back up Philip Rivers. Brady Quinn signed with the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday to back up Matt Cassel.
With the absence of Quinn, the Broncos' reserve quarterback situation is just as unsure as their starting quarterback situation, as it is still unknown whether the guy will be Manning or Tim Tebow.

The Denver Broncos have openings on the roster for tight end since Daniel Fells is a free agent and the others were less than impressive in 2012. We likely won't see Fells back with the team in 2012, as he is looking around at other team. He will visit the New England Patriots on Monday, reports Mike Klis of the Denver Post.
Fells caught 19 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns while also playing as a blocker. Fells signed as a free agent in 2011, spending the three previous years with the St. Louis Rams. Klis writes this about Fells' time with Denver:
He made a couple of terrific catches late in games last season that were part of Tim Tebow’s magical comebacks.
If that's all, then losing him isn't a big loss. The Broncos are better off looking at a tight end in the draft or bringing in Dallas Clark, late of the Indianapolis Colts.

The Kansas City Chiefs lost out on Peyton Manning, but they appear to have found their backup for Matt Cassel this coming season by signing former Denver Broncos backup quarterback Brady Quinn, reports the Kansas City Star's Adam Teicher. The terms of his contract are currently unknown.
Quinn never played in a regular season game for the Broncos after being acquired in the Peyton Hillis deal with the Cleveland Browns. In two seasons with the Broncos, Quinn backed up Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow. He almost entered the Broncos' playoff game in January, either as a change-of-pace/situational role or for injury (the latter had the Broncos defeated the New England Patriots instead of losing).
The Broncos had given some thought bringing back Quinn, but with the Peyton Manning Circus still running who knows what is happening at the position for the Broncos.

Denver Broncos QB Brady Quinn is visiting the Kansas City Chiefs today, according to the Denver Post's Mike Klis.

Quinn, who was with Denver in each of the past few years, hasn't thrown a pass in the NFL since December 20, 2009 when he put up a 27.7 passer rating and in a 41-34 victory over the Chiefs. There was talk towards the end of last season that Quinn may see some time under center for Denver in passing situations, but those rumors never came to fruition. Regardless of where Quinn signs, he will be battling for a spot as a team's back up quarterback, or depending on how minicamp goes, a roster spot.

The Denver Broncos pursued defensive tackle Paul Soliai in free agency when things began on Tuesday, but he quickly signed a new deal to return to the Miami Dolphins. The Broncos must now see if they can retain Brodrick Bunkley, a starter last year at defensive tackle, since he is visiting the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, according to Larry Holder.
Bunkley came to the Broncos via a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles after the Cleveland Browns decided to void the deal they had with the Eagles. He eventually assumed a starting role with the team and was paired with Marcus Thomas since Ty Warren went down with injury during the preseason and Kevin Vickerson shortly into the regular season.
Soliai signed a two-year, $12 million contract, likely setting the parameters for the eventual deal Bunkley signs with his future team.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Denver Broncos have missed their chance to acquire DE John Abraham, who signed with the Atlanta Falcons on Friday afternoon:
Falcons reached agreement with DE John Abraham on a three-year deal.

The Broncos were rumored to be in the hunt for Abraham, who has played the last seven years with the Falcons. Abraham, a 12-year NFL veteran, turns 34 this May. He has accrued 112.0 sacks in his time split between the Atlanta and the New York Jets.
In 2011, Abraham started 15 games and hassled quarterbacks to the tune of 9.5 sacks. The versatile defender has average 0.7 sacks per game and 9 and 1/3 sacks per season.

The Denver Broncos are reportedly scheduled to meet with free agent LB Geno Hayes, according CBS Sports. The four-year veteran out of FSU has started 42 games in his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and has accrued 7.0 sacks, 4 interceptions and 4 forced fumbles.
Hayes started 13 games in the 2011 NFL season, but lost his starting role in Week 9 due to poor performance. He returned to the starting lineup in Week 12 but could not stop the Buc's 10-game losing streak (in which they allowed no fewer than 23 points in each game). Hayes collected a total of 64 tackles in 2011 (0.0 sacks), intercepted 1 pass and defended 2 passes.

While the Peyton Manning Free Agent Craze reaches a standstill and makes people reach for any kind of update, the Denver Broncos are actually making waves on other fronts. They signed safety Mike Adams on Thursday afternoon to solidify the safety position, and on Friday the team will bring in linebacker Jameel McClain, according to the NFL Network's Jason La Canfora:
Ravens LB Jameel McClain will visit Denver Friday #freeagency
— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) March 16, 2012
McClain, an inside linebacker, recorded 84 total tackles in 2011 for a Baltimore Ravens defense that was No. 3 in yards allowed and No. 3 in points allowed. The Broncos are unlikely to bring back Joe Mays to start inside and there are still questions over the long-term viability of Nate Irving, 2011's third-round draft choice.
It's also possible that the Broncos could want to move him to the outside if D.J. Williams, currently facing a six-game suspension for a failed drug test, is not retained.

Former Denver Broncos wide receiver Eddie Royal has signed with the San Diego Chargers, according to multiple reports. The financial terms have yet to be disclosed, but Royal's agreement is for three years.
Royal, a 2008 second round draft pick of Denver's, leaves the Broncos after four years and 206 catches. His most productive year came as a rookie, when he hauled in 91 catches for nearly 1,000 yards. His receiving role had diminished since, and he caught only 19 passes during 2011 when the Broncos shifted to a run and option based offense with Tim Tebow at quarterback.
He'll now join a familiar foe in AFC West rival San Diego, who had already signed Robert Meachem from the Saints in the opening hours of free agency.

The Denver Broncos are looking for another pass rusher, and they appear to have found one that has piqued their interest. According to Pro Football Talk, Denver is targeting 33-year defensive end John Abraham:

The Denver Broncos, looking to upgrade their secondary, will be hosting another free agent defensive back this week. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Marcus Trufant will be in Denver this Friday, getting the Broncos' sales pitch:

Trufant has played his entire 10-year NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks, earning a Pro Bowl appearance in 2007. With 21 career interceptions and 110 pass deflections, the 32-year-old Trufant is one of the top remaining cornerback free agents. After showing enough interest to schedule a visit with the Denver Broncos, free agent defensive tackle Paul Soliai is on the brink of re-signing with the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday, according to Jeff Darlington of NFL.com. He also reports that Soliai is in Miami's facility right now, so a deal could be reached quite soon.
Soliai, 28, has been a key defensive lineman for Miami over the past few years, emerging as a starter during the 2010 season. Since the beginning of 2010, he's started 27 games for the Dolphins, proving to be an effective run stopper up the middle.
A fourth-round pick by Miami in 2007, Soliai was planning on visiting Denver brass soon, but it appears that the Dolphins have swayed him to cancel the trip and remain with his original team.

Defensive tackle Paul Soliai is scheduled for a visit with the Denver Broncos, but it may just be a way for him to decide on the length of the contract he would sign with the team. Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole reports that Soliai is seeking either a two- or five-year deal with the Broncos:
DT Paul Soliai looking at either a 5-year or 2-year deal with Broncos. Debating the options.
— Jason Cole (@JasonColeYahoo) March 14, 2012
It'll be interesting to see the length of the deal the Broncos give out this year. Last summer with the shortened free agency period, the Broncos did hand out more than a two-year deal to any signee, and those were to running back Willis McGahee and defensive tackle Ty Warren (who missed the entire season).
We can be certain that Manning will receive a contract for multiple years, but beyond that John Fox and John Elway might not want to tie up copious amounts of money over several years. But the Broncos could certainly use a 6-foot-4, 355-pound defensive tackle to stuff the middle of the line.

The Denver Broncos could very well look at signing a safety during the free agency period given Brian Dawkins' uncertain future. Dawkins is a free agent and considering retirement, but if he returns it will be with the Broncos. Even if he does, the Broncos could use some help there in case Dawkins can't finish out the season. Former Chicago Bears safety Brandon Meriweather might be the answer:

The team had rookie Quinton Carter turn in a decent year, but Rahim Moore regressed badly over the season and lost plenty of playing time at free safety. No matter how we look at things, the Broncos definitely need to pick up some depth, or even a new starter, at safety.

While the Denver Broncos wait with the rest of America to hear where quarterback Peyton Manning will play next season, the Broncos have announced they will place a "same round tender" on restricted free agents Ryan McBean and Matt Willis. From Mike Klis of the Denver Post:
Broncos have tendered all their restricted free agents: DT Ryan McBean, WR Matt Willis; Exclusive right FA: L. Ball, C. Clark, B. Colquitt

McBean, who sued the league earlier in the day, is one of three Denver players facing a suspension to open the season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. As of the moment, the defensive tackle is slated to miss the first six games of next season.
McBean was a fourth round selection of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2007, meaning if another team tries to sign him, Denver can either match the offer or accept a fourth round draft pick as compensation.

The Kansas City Chiefs were the only team to offer a completed contract to free agent quarterback Peyton Manning on Thursday, according to Denver radio host Brandon Spano. Spano's source says that Kansas City appears to be the most prepared of the teams interested in Manning's services.
Following his recent release from the Indianapolis Colts, rumors tied Manning to the Denver Broncos, who could potentially be looking for an upgrade to incumbent starting quarterback Tim Tebow. Numerous other teams were also named as possibilities, many of which don't have an option that's as established and loved by the fanbase as the former Florida Gator is in Mile High.

The Denver Broncos quarterback rumors are swirling, as the team is rumored to be interested in free agent quarterback Peyton Manning and he apparently prefers to stay in the AFC. The Broncos are one of twelve teams that have all reached out to Manning, but if he doesn't make his way to Denver, Mike Klis of The Denver Post predicts that the team certainly add a veteran quarterback to push Tim Tebow in 2012.
The list of Manning alternatives includes former Miami Dolphins starter Chad Henne, Arizona Cardinals starter Kevin Kolb, Tampa Bay Buccaneers backup Josh Johnson, Brady Quinn and Pittsburgh Steelers backup Dennis Dixon. Free Agent quarterback Peyton Manning is considering all of his options at the moment, but a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter says the Denver Broncos have contacted Manning's representatives and that the future Hall Of Famer prefers to stay in the AFC. Twelve teams in total are rumored to be interested, and organizations that have reportedly reached out include three NFC teams (the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins) and four AFC teams -- the Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos and New York Jets.
Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post suggested earlier this week that Manning might also prefer warmer destinations over cold-weather cities like Denver, so the mix of speculation on grows more complicated with each passing day. There is also talk that Tim Tebow would be traded if Manning makes his way to Denver, so the ripple effect of this pursuit by the Broncos could have a big impact on the future of the franchise.

The Peyton Manning rumor mill is gaining steam around the nation, and especially among those who cover the Denver Broncos. The Broncos appear to be more than just a team with a passing interest, as reports continue to feed into a Broncos buzz for Manning. And where does this leave Tim Tebow if the Broncos do get Peyton Manning. Vic Lombardi thinks he has the information on what will happen:
Lastly, if the Broncos do indeed win the Manning sweepstakes, Tim Tebow will be traded. I'm told there's no way they will co-exist.
— Vic Lombardi (@VicLombardi) March 8, 2012
Because, for the second year in a row, the team will have nabbed the starting spot from Tebow right out in front of him before the start of training camp.
Look, there's nothing wrong with pursuing Peyton Manning. It is a win now move, but are the second- and third-order effects being taken into account here? If Tebow is traded and Manning winds up getting injured again, the team really would be in a worse-off place. We need to believe that John Elway, John Fox and Brian Xanders are weighing all the variables and making contingency plans (though none would ever be put into perfection).

The Denver Broncos may have done more than just talk to Peyton Manning's agent. Pro Football Talk reports that according to NFL sources, Denver is positioning itself to make a big push for the now free agent Hall-of-Famer.
Mike Klis of the Denver Post reported earlier on Wednesday that the Broncos had called Manning's agent Tom Condon to guage the quarterback's interest in the team. The call wasn't considered an outward advance, however, after all the team made the playoffs under Tim Tebow this past season. The Pro Football Talk report indicates that there may have been more to the call, though everything up to this point should be classified as speculation.
What happens to Tebow if Manning joins the Broncos remains the biggest question surrounding a hypothetical deal. Tebow could simply take a back seat, or Denver might opt to use his size and athleticism in some other role.

But before we start labeling the Broncos as a real player for the quarterback, Klis writes that the team is merely calling Manning's agent, Tom Condon, to gauge his client's interest in Denver. Klis then breaks down the reasons why the team might not do it, ones we've mentioned here already: Manning's neck issues, his age, Tim Tebow.
Bringing in Manning isn't a bad idea, but the team sure does need to have a plan in case the worst-case scenario happens: Manning's neck isn't healed and he can't play. How many seasons are the Broncos going to alienate Tim Tebow as the supposed starter for the team?

With the impending release of long-time Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, the sports world has begun to speculate on his next landing spot -- and by the sounds of it, the Denver Broncos should be one of his top choices.
In Alex Marvez's latest ruminations on FOX Sports, he suggests Denver has the cap space, but not necessarily the right fit:
7. Denver
Pros: Manning would love working with head coach John Fox and Elway, who is entering his second year as Denver’s executive vice president. ...
Cons: The Broncos want to push Tebow with a veteran but probably not with someone who casts such a large shadow as Manning. The $20 million-plus Denver is expected to have in salary-cap space has spurred some of the public Manning conversation. It’s assuredly wishful thinking. Elway should know the team must dedicate the available cap room to upgrading the defense, especially at defensive tackle and the secondary.
Marvez ranks Denver as the 7th best of the 7 possible locations Manning would go, but Bomani Jones of SB Nation NFL thinks Denver would welcome with, well, open arms:
Denver
Pros: No general manager will give him a bigger hug if he joins the team. It won't even be close.
Cons: Only team in the NFL that performs better without quarterbacks who put up points and hit receivers in stride.
The Colts are expected to officially announce their decision to cut Peyton Manning Wednesday afternoon.

Peyton Manning is expected to be released on Wednesday once the team officially declines to pay him his $28 million roster bonus that was included as part of a $90 million deal he signed last offseason. This is expected to set off a furious courting ritual for a number of teams in the league. Just don't expect the Denver Broncos to be one of those teams, according to the Denver Post's Mike Klis.
Related: Broncos Given Low Odds On Landing Peyton Manning
Obviously, we don't know that they won't bid, but why wouldn't John Elway be interested. Manning would certainly be a quarterback that Elway, John Fox and Brian Xanders would like: Manning is a proven quarterback who has the leadership skills and physical characteristics of a prototypical quarterback. But the injury risk combined with the presence of Tim Tebow would make it a rather difficult situation to spin.
We should also acknowledge that Manning is likely to bring either Reggie Wayne or Pierre Garcon with him wherever he signs. The Broncos certainly have the cap space to bring in Manning and one of his receivers, but the potential for bad contracts to hang on the books makes that a risky move.
So, as Klis writes, Manning's free agency process will determine where other quarterbacks sign, including the Broncos' future backup for Tebow. And then Mike Shanahan's Washington Redskins or the Miami Dolphins or half a dozen other teams can roll the dice on Manning.

The Indianapolis Colts have decided that quarterback Peyton Manning will no longer be a member of the organization and will released on Wednesday, declining his $28 million roster bonus. ESPN's Chris Mortensen had the original report:
Colts and Manning will part ways, per team sources #NFL32
— Chris Mortensen (@mortreport) March 6, 2012
This is, as we have known for a couple of months now, a wholly expected move given the concern over Manning's injured but repaired neck. He will now be, perhaps, the biggest free agent in the NFL ever. There are plenty of teams that will be interested in him: the Seattle Seahawks, the New York Jets, the Arizona Cardinals and the Washington Redskins have all been linked to Manning.
As for the AFC West, the Kansas City Chiefs remain a potential landing spot since Matt Cassel has been a disappoint in his three years there. And, of course, the Denver Broncos will certainly enter the conversation, though whether they will really be players is up for considerable debate. Tim Tebow is the starter entering training camp, but would John Elway really want to screw around and potentially set back the team if Manning isn't fully healthy?
At best, let's put the Broncos in the intrigued but unlikely category for Manning.

The Tennessee Titans will likely let cornerback Cortland Finnegan hit the free agent market, according to Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole. This comes after the team decided to use its franchise tag designation on safety Michael Griffin. The Denver Broncos are expected to be one of several teams pursuing the free agent-to-be:
Expect CB Cortland Finnegan on market, Tampa, Dallas, Chicago, Minn, Denvet [sic] and STL to make a run. Likely top $11m per year.
— Jason Cole (@JasonColeYahoo) March 5, 2012

The Broncos are expected to pursue a cornerback in either free agency or the 2012 NFL Draft this offseason after having depth and talent issues at the position during 2011. Beyond Champ Bailey, the Broncos have the aging veteran Andre Goodman as the other starter -- he was rather shoddy in coverage. Chris Harris is a developing nickel back but lacks the size to be a starter.
Finnegan, as Cole suggests, could reach a rich deal in free agency, and the Broncos have nearly $50 million in cap space to spend this offseason. Finnegan has 14 career interceptions in six seasons with the Titans.

Add Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater to the list of players who have received the franchise tag before the Monday afternoon deadline. Prater, who was rock solid from beyond 50 yards and from within 40 yards, is one of four kickers to receive that designation this offseason, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Four kickers -- Josh Scobee, Matt Prater, Mike Nugent, Phil Dawson -- have been franchise tagged and Connor Barth likely to become fifth.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 5, 2012
Had the Broncos not used the franchise tag on Prater, the five-year veteran would have hit the free agent market. But with this tag, the Broncos will keep their kicker for around $2.6 million on a one-year deal. That is, if he and the team don't come to a long-term deal in the coming days and weeks. Often, this tag is used to give the two sides more time to reach a new contract (see: Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints this season).
It's going to be Prater Time in Denver for at least one more season.

After struggling during his final seasons in Baltimore, Willis McGahee proved his doubters wrong during the 2011/2012 campaign with the Denver Broncos. McGahee rushed for 1,199 yards and provided leadership to a Broncos team that surprised many people by winning the AFC West and advancing in the postseason.
Following his outstanding season, Mike Klis of the Denver Post reported that McGahee was unhappy with his contract situation:
While McGahee is not expected to hold out, his case for a new deal is based on making the Pro Bowl last season by leading the NFL's No. 1 rushing team with 1,199 yards and averaging 4.8 yards per carry. Given that production, McGahee's $2 million salary pales next to the expected running back franchise tag salary of about $7.7 million. At least nine NFL running backs average at least $5 million a year.
The Broncos, though, can argue they were more than generous last season because McGahee had averaged only 532 rushing yards in his previous three years as a backup to Ray Rice in Baltimore. McGahee turns 31 in October.

Three players on the Denver Broncos- safety Brian Dawkins, defensive end Jason Hunter and linebacker Joe Mays- have spoken with the team about re-signing rather than hit free agency, according to Denver radio host Brandon Spano.
Dawkins, 38, started 12 of the 14 games that he appeared in for Denver last season, but injuries caused him to break down at the end of the season. He was still effective, though, recording 38 tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble while being a leading voice in a defensive unit loaded with young players.
Hunter appeared in 15 games for the Broncos in 2011 but started only twice. The 28-year-old recorded 17 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble, but it was a decline in playing time from the previous two years, during which he recorded a combined eight sacks over 30 games, including 21 starts.
Mays emerged as a starter for Denver at linebacker last season, appearing in all 16 games while making 13 starts. He failed to record a sack, interception or forced fumble, but the 26-year-old did 67 tackles. He's been a project for the team since being drafted in the sixth round of the 2008 draft out of North Dakota St.

It would be surprising if the Denver Broncos didn't sign kicker Matt Prater to a new deal soon, according to sources that have spoken with Denver radio host Brandon Spano. Prater has apparently expressed an interest in eschewing free agency to return to the team that he's played for since 2007.
Prater, 27, went undrafted after playing in college for Central Florida, first being signed by the Detroit Lions in 2006 as an undrafted free agent. He failed to play for them or his next team, the Miami Dolphins, before finally making his NFL debut with the Atlanta Falcons in 2007.
That stint didn't last long before Prater lost the job, though, ultimately landing with the Broncos in the middle of the 2007 season. By 2008, he was the full-time kicker with the departure of Jason Elam, and he's ultimately emerged as a very solid option at the position.

The Denver Broncos have plenty of personnel decisions to make this offseason, including what to do about their defensive tackle situation. They could look to shore up the spot in the draft, but they'd also like to hang on to DT Brodrick Bunkley, who is a free agent:
Shoring up the Broncos' DT corps is a priority for John Elway, but that might start with re-signing pending free agent Brodrick Bunkley. "He really played well," Elway said. "Like all of our free agents, we would like to get them back in the building and consider (re-signing them)."

The latest news from the Denver Broncos front office indicates the mile high team should have some extra dollars to play with in the 2012 NFL Offseason:
Just got off the phone with Broncos official who has confirmed that the 27 million in last years cap space has been rolled over to 2012
— Brandon Spano Show (@BrandonSpano) February 28, 2012
The Broncos are reportedly interested in adding at least two quarterbacks, including such players as Peyton Manning, Vince Young and Drew Stanton, as well as potentially adding a cornerback for greater depth behind All-Pro CB Champ Bailey.
John Elway had previously announced that the club intended to "spend more than cap" in 2012, at least in raw dollars, and the substantial carryover from last year should give them plenty of leverage in acquiring some top talent.

The Denver Broncos are reportedly interested in bringing in at least two more quarterbacks, but given the recent report from Adam Schein of FOX Sports, one of those quarterbacks will not likely be free agent QB Jason Campbell:
Campbell just laughed for 15 seconds when I asked him about signing with the Broncos via free agency.
— Adam Schein (@AdamSchein) February 28, 2012
Campbell, 31 year-old veteran quarterback a former first round draft pick for the Washington Redskins, played for the Oakland Raiders in 2010 and 2011. He has an admirable career quarterback rating of 82.8, but lost his starting job in Oakland last year when he went down a broken collarbone and the team subsequently sign veteran QB Carson Palmer.
Campbell is expected to be an unrestricted free agent when the NFL Free Agency period begins on in mid March.

The Denver Broncos are committed to quarterback Tim Tebow next season according to general manager John Elway, but that doesn't mean the team is totally set with the quarterback position on its depth chart. The Broncos have been rumored to pursue anyone from Peyton Manning to David Garrard, and now we have a new name to throw into the mix: Detroit Lions quarterback Drew Stanton.
#lions QB Drew Stanton to test free agency according to sources, don't be surprised if #broncos make a run at him for backup behind #tebow

Stanton was last seen in 2010 when he played in six games for Detroit. He ended the year with a 58 percent completion percentage in 119 attempts, as well as four touchdown passes, three interceptions, and a QB rating of 78.4. Stanton did not enter a game last season. With the Lions hoping to bring back quarterback Shaun Hill, who's also a free agent, Stanton could be looking for a new opportunity.

Denver Broncos safety and 16-year NFL veteran Brian Dawkins first spoke three weeks ago about whether he will announce his retirement of return to the Broncos via free agency, but GM John Elway revealed to MaxBroncos.com on Friday that he has yet to speak with the unrestricted free agent leader. The 38-year-old safety played his way into the Pro Bowl during the first 12 games of the 2011 season, but he suffered neck injury in week 13 and missed the rest of the season.
With the 2012 NFL Draft drawing closer and prospects like Alabama Crimson Tide safety Mark Barron possibly available with the No. 21 overall pick, the dialogue between Elway and Dawkins should begin soon. The back end of the secondary is an important aspect of any defense, so if the Broncos hope to develop a top-tier unit on that side of the ball, Dawkins will have to show he is ready and willing to step up for another NFL season or let the team move on in another direction. In any case, the conversation needs to happen soon to the team knows where their safety position stands.

We're fast approaching the early March deadline for Peyton Manning's roster bonus to kick in or to see him released. If Manning is released, there are plenty of teams (including the AFC West's Kansas City Chiefs) who attempt to swiftly bring Manning into the fold. The Denver Broncos could certainly be an interested party, but the Denver Post's Mike Klis also brings up a good point about this:
John Elway did say, remember, Tebow would be the starter entering training camp. So Manning would take No. 2 reps during minicamp and through the first week of training camp?
Would the Broncos really bring in Manning and tell him that he needs to compete for the starting job? Or would we have a similar situation to last year when Tebow looked to have the starting job heading into camp and then had it pulled away at the last second?
Klis also suggests Vince Young could be a quarterback of interest to the Broncos -- obviously, because he can't throw but is a "winner," which Klis also points out. Uh, huh. . . .

Brandon Lloyd is a free agent after spending the 2011 season with the Denver Broncos and the St. Louis Rams. While the Rams could think about using its franchise tag on the wide receiver, free agency is waiting with open arms on March 13 for Lloyd. Just don't go thinking the Broncos will try to bring him back:
One team Lloyd rules out via free agency is a return to Denver, citing "style of offense". Hmmm...
— Adam Schein (@AdamSchein) February 22, 2012
There was never a likely scenario for Lloyd to return. The Broncos traded Lloyd to avoid any problems he may have had with the offensive turn to accentuate the pluses in Tim Tebow's game. Since Lloyd is citing "style of offense," he certainly wouldn't want to work once again in an offense that is centered on Tebow.
Also, the Broncos didn't want to hand out a long-term extension to a receiver who had a career year in 2010 and is already 30-plus years old.
All in all, this is like John Fox telling us that Brady Quinn's GQ comments won't affect his chances of returning to the Broncos: that decision may already have been made (that is, to not bring him back). More than likely, Josh McDaniels will want to bring Lloyd to the New England Patriots, the coach whom he played for during his best season.

The Denver Broncos, who have $49 million in cap space, could, in an ideal world, make its pass-rushing attack even stronger by picking up defensive end Mario Williams in free agency. But the Broncos are unlikely to make a big splash in free agency, and Williams is unlikely to be the exception for the Broncos, according to the Denver Post's Jeff Legwold.
Last season, due to the short free agency period and a desire to avoid potentially handing out bad contracts, the Broncos stayed relatively quiet by signing only two free agents to multi-year deals: Willis McGahee and Ty Warren each signed a two-year contract. The team didn't pursue DeAngelo Williams once it became clear that he wanted a large contract (eventually signing a five-year, $43 million contract with the Carolina Panthers).
Still, envisioning a pass rush of Williams, Elvis Dumervil and Von Miller will be a dream until he chooses his new team. Williams missed most of the 2011 season with a torn pectoral muscle, but the six-year veteran has 53 sacks in his career.

Free agent quarterback David Garrard would appear to meet the Denver Broncos' need for a veteran quarterback to push Tim Tebow next season, but Cecil Lammey of ESPN 102.3 is reporting that Garrard is a longshot to reunite with Jack Del Rio in Denver. The relationship between the two men no doubt suffered when the Jacksonville Jaguars chose to release Garrard just five days prior to the start of the 2011 season and turned to Luke McCown before settling on rookie QB Blaine Gabbert.
The four-year starter for the Jags recently told Tania Ganguli of the Jacksonville.com he feels 90 to 95 percent healthy after surgery to repair a herniated disk in the fall of 2011, and said he is just hoping to find a good opportunity in 2012:
"I'm going to make sure whatever team I go to has talent at the skill positions, so when my name is called I've got the best guys around me that are all proven," Garrard said. "That city the fans, the team itself, the skill players, the coaches, the system, all those things I get to take in account and weigh my options."
"I don't have a big ego. I love starting, I love being the guy that everybody looks up to. If that's not quite the situation... I don't have any harsh feelings toward that."
In that same story, Tania Ganguli noted that "Garrard never publically criticized the Jaguars for releasing him, but some, including Garrard's agent, questioned the timing." That might be enough to eliminate him as a possibility for the Broncos.

The AFC West didn't experience a release of talent with the Oakland Raiders cutting cornerback Stanford Routt recently; rather, the talent just shifted elsewhere to the division: the Kansas City Chiefs. The cornerback signed a three-year, $19.6 million deal on Monday, quite possibly signaling the end of Brandon Carr's time with the Chiefs.
Related: NFL Franchise Tags: Who Gets Tagged?
We've already mentioned the possibility of the Broncos looking at Carr, but we're not a lone voice in this. ESPN's Bill Williamson also thinks the Broncos could go after Carr:
I thought Denver would be the favorite in the division to land Routt, but the Broncos reportedly never had any interest. Carr could pair nicely with the aging Champ Bailey for the short term. The Broncos could then have Carr take over as the No.1 cornerback if Bailey is eventually moved to safety. The Broncos have cap room and I could see them looking at Carr.
The Broncos have $49 million in cap space and could certainly go a spending spree, but the blowback from that could eventually saddle the team with a number of bad contracts. If Carr wants to be paid like a No. 1 corner, the Broncos might not want to bite on him -- just as they did by not pursuing DeAngelo Williams last offseason since he received a monster contract for a running back. In that case, the Broncos signed Willis McGahee to a relative bargain of a contract. The Broncos could look to do the same at cornerback this year or draft one in April.
Williamson believes the Raiders would be a top suitor for the Raiders, but only if they clear salary cap space to sign him. He finds the Chargers to be the least likely of the teams in the AFC West to pick up the cornerback.

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox says that Tim Tebow will enter camp in 2012 as the team's starting quarterback, but he also says the team is going to acquire two additional quarterbacks to come in and compete.
While Tebow is the Broncos' starting quarterback, the team is expected to acquire two new quarterbacks this offseason.
"Numbers wise that's accurate," Broncos coach John Fox said Monday...

Tebow and Adam Weber are the only quarterbacks currently under contract in Denver, and since most teams usually have four quarterbacks in camp, the Broncos would be adding players to get up to a more typical allotment at that position.

The Denver Broncos are going to overhaul the wide receiver position this offseason, as Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker are likely to be the only two from the 2011 group to be back in 2012. NFL teams can start to place the franchise tag -- a guaranteed one-year contract -- on one of its impending free agents on Monday, Feb. 20, and anytime through March 5. Don't use that designation on a player, free agency welcomes him with open arms (and a big checkbook, most likely). For the Denver Broncos, there is only really one possibility, long known to be a candidate for it: kicker Matt Prater.
Related: NFL Franchise Tags: Who Gets Tagged?
Prater kicked many key field goals, including four game-winners, during the 2011 season. The team would be crazy to let him enter free agency. And using the tag doesn't preclude the team from negotiating a long-term deal afterward. Teams just need a little more time to work out a new contract and the franchise tag is one way of doing that.

The Denver Broncos have an emerging star in wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, but the depth behind him is almost non-existent. Eric Decker is a decent option as a No. 3 receiver, but beyond that the other guys are free agents: Eddie Royal and Matthew Willis. This, combined with $49 million in cap space for the Broncos, leads Sports Illustrated's Peter King to believe that the team will be a player in free agency for a wide receiver.
The Broncos are one of five teams with $45 million or more in cap space, which has King seeing big paydays for several receivers:
[The cap space] is good for a restricted free agent like Mike Wallace, who could get an offer the Steelers won't be able to match because of their cap problems this winter, and for unrestricted free agents like Vincent Jackson, Stevie Johnson, Brandon Lloyd and maybe an under-the-radar guy like Robert Meachem of the Saints.
We can cross off Brandon Lloyd from that list -- the team traded him because of his impending free agency -- and Mike Wallace is probably too expensive of a tender for the Broncos (there are hints that the team won't spend greatly in free agency).
The one player that would be intriguing -- though he will certainly want to be paid big money -- is Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson. Jackson is a Colorado Springs, CO, native and played for the Northern Colorado Bears in college. He's a big target (6-foot-5, 230 pounds) that Tim Tebow would certainly love. Jackson has had 1,000-plus yards receiving in three of the last four seasons.

Outside of Champ Bailey, the Denver Broncos have a dearth of talent at cornerback and will likely look for some help there in the upcoming draft or in free agency. Over at CBS Sports, Pete Prisco takes a stab at which free agent is the best fit for each team, selecting cornerback Tracy Porter for the Broncos.
Porter turns 26 in August and will be in his fifth camp since the New Orleans Saints drafted him in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Before the 2011 season, Porter played for ex-Broncos defensive coordinator and current Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen. One could be led to believe that the Raiders might pursue the cornerback as a result of that connection.
Porter, 5 feet 11 and 186 pounds, has seven career interceptions, including four during the 2009 season. Pairing him up with Champ Bailey would allow the Broncos to move on from Andre Goodman's uneven play.

Denver Broncos defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley is now an unrestricted free agent, but it remains unclear whether his time with Denver has come to an end or not. After being traded to the Broncos last summer in exchange for a 2012 fifth-round pick, the disappointing former first-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles (No. 14 overall in 2006) is hitting the open market for the first time.
He battled a ligament and nerve injury in his left elbow and recorded 47 tackles (solo and assisted), one forced fumble and zero sacks in 16 games with the Broncos in 2011, but Bunkley is a tough decision for the team. As Bunkley said of his time with Eagles, where he underwhelmed and failed to live up to draft-day expectations (via the Denver Post), "I think they were done with me."
Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil thought Bunkley did a great job in the middle for the team saying (via the Denver Post): "We haven't had a guy like that, not since I've been here. He's been like a monster in there." Bunkley is one of 17 unrestricted free agents for the Denver, and the list also included DT Marcus Thomas, while fellow DT Ryan McBean is a restricted free agent. John Elway recently reiterated that Tim Tebow is the Denver Broncos starting quarterback entering training camp; however, Elway also is sticking to his plan to have a competition at the position, as well. Elway recently told Mike Klis of the Denver Post:
"No question, he's [Tebow] our starter going in," Elway said. "But competition will be good for everybody, at every position."
And that's really how it should be for most everyone on the team. By handing anyone a position without a sense of competition behind them could create complacency. But we know enough about Tim Tebow's drive to improve and win that even if he wasn't going to face a competition that he would keep working to do all that he can to win.
However, a tangible competition could prove to be more beneficial as Tebow has an individual to focus on to stay ahead of the game. Unless the Broncos draft a quarterback in the first round or do sign Peyton Manning if he is released, there shouldn't be any reason for Tebow to worry too much about losing that grip on the starting position. If he does, well, that's likely going to be all on him.

The Denver Broncos have jumped into the free agent market and signed former third-round draft pick, wide receiver Jason Hill. Hill was originally drafted No. 76 overall in the 2007 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, but the 6'1" deep threat failed to ever translate his speed into production. After he grabbed a total of 40 receptions during his first three seasons, the San Francisco 49ers cut ties with Hill in 2010 and he moved on to spend the remainder of that season and all of 2011 with Jack Del Rio and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
After posting modest career highs in yards (367) and touchdowns (3) with the Jaguars last season, the 28-year-old Hill moves on to Denver to team up Tim Tebow, and he is excited for the opportunity:
"It's an opportunity for me to compete and that's all we want at the professional level," Hill said Wednesday night. "They've got a good vibe going. I think they're ascending. And I want to be a part of it. I haven't caught a left-hander before in my career but I'm sure it's something I can adapt to. I like him. He's a winner. It's all about winning to me."
quotes via Mike Klis and Lindsay H. Jones of the Denver Post.
He dropped a potential game-winning pass at the end of a tight game against the Cleveland Browns in week 11 last season, and was waived back in November, but now gets a chance to redeem himself and fulfill the potential he flashed leading up to the 2007 NFL Draft. With WR Eddie Royal becoming a free agent and expected to test the market, Hill will compete for a job behind Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker.

The Denver Broncos plan to spend a bit more money on player salaries in 2012 than the team did in 2011, as Broncos head of football operations John Elway told the Denver Post's Mike Klis on Wednesday. Elway noted that some of the available spending money is from the team's trade of Kyle Orton to the Kansas City Chiefs last year.
Cash-wise we'll spend more than cap this year. But that's where it comes down to how everybody accounts and how the numbers get skewed. Whether you're over the cap or under the cap it just comes down to the accounting.
In 2011, the Broncos spent $117.5 million on player salaries, which equates to about 98 percent of the league's $120.375 million salary cap. Denver saved $2.6 million by trading Orton to the Chiefs last year after Tim Tebow emerged as the team's starting quarterback, and the team's savings from 2011 will apparently roll over to 2012.

The Denver Broncos have agreed to sign offensive guard C.J. Davis, as the team announced on its official Twitter feed. Davis will be entering his third NFL season after spending the previous two seasons playing for the Carolina Panthers.
Davis, 25, was signed by the Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2009 after spending his college career playing for Pittsburgh. He missed the entire 2009 season while dealing with injuries, but he appeared in seven games with Carolina in 2010.
In 2011, the Broncos started Chris Kuper and Zane Beadles at their two respective guard positions for all 16 games. Davis gives the line some depth, though, as well as a young player with the potential to improve in the long run.

With the NFL season in the books, the focus begins to shift toward the 2012 NFL draft and free agency. On Monday, ESPN blogger Bill Williamson ranked the top 13 potential unrestricted free agents in the AFC West. The Denver Broncos have two players on the list, including defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley, who checks in at No. 7.

This is what Williamson had to say about Bunkley:
He is an underrated player, who could be would be popular on the open market. Denver wants him back.
Bunkley, a six-year NFL veteran, had 43 tackles for Denver in 2011. He spent the five years prior to that one with the Philadelphia Eagles.
The other Denver player to make the list was kicker Matt Prater, at No. 13.

The Denver Broncos could be without a kicker if they allow Matt Prater to enter free agency. But it may not come to that if the Broncos decide to use the franchise tag on him, which is likely to happen, according to Mike Klis of the Denver Post. That would net him a one-year salary slightly less than $2.6 million.
Free agency doesn't begin until March 13, which the Broncos could still try to work out a long-term deal with Prater without using the franchise tag. But if they do need more time to work out a deal with Prater, applying the franchise tag would provide more time.
Prater was 19-of-25 on field goals this season, making 3-of-4 field goals of 50-plus yards and all eight field goals in the 30-39 range. He had four-game winning field goals. The only area Prater didn't do exceptional in was the 40-49 range, making just 3-of-7 attempts.

For the Denver Broncos, the 2012 offseason could be used to lay the foundation of the secondary once cornerback Champ Bailey transitions to safety down the line and eventually into retirement. While the team could certainly use its first-round draft pick in April on a cornerback like Janoris Jenkins or Stephon Gilmore, first we must see what will happen in free agency.
If Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Brandon Carr hits the free agent market, the Broncos should definitely think about opening up the checkbook for him. The four-year veteran out of Grand Valley State is set to become a free agent -- that is, as long as the Chiefs don't use the franchise tag on him.
Adam Teicher of KansasCity.com isn't quite sure what to make of it, but he certainly believes there's some message behind the Chiefs' interest in Stanford Routt, recently released by the Oakland Raiders. It could be an indication that the team would rather use its franchise tag on wide receiver Dwayne Bowe or it could be a way to tell Carr that he better change his negotiating stance if he wants to re-sign with the team.
The Broncos wouldn't need to see guys like Andre Goodman or Jonathan Wilhite get burned anymore. Carr had four interceptions in 2011, doubling his career total to eight interceptions in his career.

Of all the players that could possibly be Tim Tebow backup on the Denver Broncos for the 2012 season, don't expect Jimmy Clausen to be on any final cut list. Broncos head coach John Fox was against drafting the Notre Dame quarterback when he was still the coach of the Carolina Panthers in 2010, reports Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post.
Clausen is unnecessary in Carolina with the emergence of Cam Newton, the 2012 offensive rookie of the year and potentially a superstar in the making. Clausen was the 16th pick in the second round and eventually found himself as a rookie thrown into the starting role on a bad team. He and the Panthers went 2-14, leading to the selection of Newton as the first overall pick in 2011. It also wound up being the death knell of Fox's tenure in Carolina.
Clausen completed 52.5 percent of his passes in 13 games and had three touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2009. Even if Fox was a fan of Clausen's, there would still be (and are) better options available to be the Broncos' backup.

The Denver Broncos have a lot to sort out during the offseason, and not all of their issues revolve around quarterback Tim Tebow. According to The Sporting News' Andrew Mason, who broke down the Broncos' offseason checklist Sunday, head coach John Fox needs to find out what he's going to do with the middle linebacker position.
"Starting middle linebacker Joe Mays is an unrestricted free agent," wrote Mason. "He might not have started at all in 2011 had there been a normal offseason; the lockout scuttled organized team activities, so third-round pick Nate Irving had no chance to adequately learn the defense. The Broncos like Irving's presence and potential. It would be no surprise if they give him the job and part with Mays."
Last season, Irving did not start and played mostly on special teams, tallying just three tackles. In 2009, while still at N.C. State, Irving suffered a broken leg and a punctured lung. However, he successfully came back from that in 2010 and worked his way into being a mid-round draft pick.

Jon Bois of SB Nation has combed through the best sports moments from the month of January, and Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater -- scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in 2012 -- earned the top with his amazingly awesome touchback against the Pittsburgh Steelers. That's right, a touchback earned the No. 1 overall spot. How could this be so? Check out just how determined the ball is to find it's way to the 20 yard line after hitting the crossbar on the opening kickoff:

The Denver Broncos have signed fullback Austin Sylvester, as the team announced on Wednesday. Sylvester was on Denver's active roster for two games during the 2011 season, including the AFC Wild Card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he spent another five weeks on the team's practice squad.
Sylvester wasn't drafted in 2011 after playing for the University of Washington in college, where he spent a good deal of time playing special teams before emerging as the primary fullback during his senior year. He never appeared in an NFL game during his rookie season, despite being active twice.
He spent a short amount of time on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad early last season, but now Sylvester will be a Bronco for the foreseeable future. Denver has been using Spencer Larsen at fullback frequently, although he also spends time at linebacker as the rare two-way player.

The Denver Broncos will enter free agency with 17 players freely able to leave the team. Safety Brian Dawkins will likely either retire or sign up with the Broncos for one more year.
It remains to be seen what, if anything, Stokley has left in the tank, but the Denver Broncos have looked to surround Manning with familiar pieces this offseason, and Stokley fits that mold. Manning and Stokley were teammates from 2003-2006 in Indianapolis, and across those four seasons he caught 139 passes for 1,916 yards and 15 touchdowns.
