The Denver Broncos and the Pittsburgh Steelers meet in the playoffs for the first time since AFC Championship Game on Jan. 22, 2006, the last time the Broncos were in the playoffs. The Steelers won that game, 34-17, and went on to defeat the Seattle Seahawks for a Super Bowl victory. It was just the latest playoff game between the two that saw the victor go on to the Super Bowl (this one needing to do it since it decided the conference championship.

We also saw this happen in Jan. 1998 when the Broncos defeated the Steelers before winning a Super Bowl for John Elway. In Jan. 1990, the Broncos defeated the Steelers in the divisional round and followed that with a victory over the Browns reach the Super Bowl (losing to the San Francisco 49ers). It also happened in 1977 and 1978, the Broncos ultimately losing in the Super Bowl in the former and the Steelers winning it all in the latter.
The only year that the winning team did not make the Super Bowl was in 1984 as the Steelers lost to the Dolphins in the conference championship after defeating the Broncos one round earlier.
