Del Rio's name emerged almost immediately once it appeared Allen was going to bolt for the Raiders. Del Rio was considered one of the top candidates along with linebackers coach Richard Smith. Del Rio was previously a defensive coordinator for John Fox with the Carolina Panthers in 2002. After one year on the job, Del Rio then became the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Broncos have now had seven different defensive coordinators in seven seasons.
