Adam Weber Better Than Tim Tebow Right Now, Some In Broncos' Organization Believe

The Denver Broncos quarterback controversy has taken another turn in a strange direction. It hasn't been Kyle Orton or Tim Tebow for a few weeks already. Brady Quinn or Tim Tebow as Orton's backup? That was so last weekend. The new one? Tim Tebow or Adam Weber for third-string quarterback.

In Michael Silver's article for Yahoo! Sports, undrafted rookie free agent Adam Weber is making a move on being better than Tim Tebow. According to Silver, there are some people in the organization who believe Weber should be the third-string quarterback over Tebow:

As one highly knowledgeable member of the organization told me Monday, "If everything was totally equal, and this were a competition based only on performance at this camp, Tebow would probably be the fourth-string guy. [...] And I’m telling you, Adam Weber is flat-out better right now."

But things aren't equal, as Silver points out. Tebow is a former first-round pick, meaning the team has plenty of money committed in him. It would be gross negligence if Tebow wasn't at the very least the third-string quarterback come the Sept. 12 season opener against the Oakland Raiders.

If Weber is that highly regarded by some in the organization, one must wonder when he'll actually see playing time in the preseason. Will we wait until the final game?

Adam Weber Battles For Roster Spot, But Practice Squad More Likely

While most of the attention this training camps is (rightly) on Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow, the Denver Broncos do have a rookie quarterback who is looking to make the team. Adam Weber signed as an undrafted free agent out of Minnesota. His college teammate was current Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker, who is set up to be the No. 3 wide receiver on the team this season.

But Weber? He's the fourth quarterback right now and it doesn't appear to be changing anytime soon. As Weber told the Denver Post recently:

"I'm a long ways off from stepping foot on a field," he said.

As Weber states earlier in the article, teams don't carry four quarterbacks. At this point, Weber is more than likely heading to the team's practice squad, where he can develop and develop his skills to compete for a roster spot in 2012. Orton and Brady Quinn are free agents next season, leaving Tebow as the only quarterback under contract entering the 2012 season.

Broncos Sign Minnesota QB Adam Weber

The Denver Broncos added Minnesota Gophers quarterback Adam Weber as an undrafted rookie free agent on Tuesday morning. Weber tweeted: "I'm headed out to Denver to join the Broncos!" This now brings the Broncos' reported total of undrafted rookie free agents to 10 (two players were erroneously reported as signed last night).

Weber as a four-year starter for the Gophers from 2007 through 2010. He completed 57 percent of his passes and had a 72:51 touchdown-to-interception rate. He did run the ball quite a bit his first two years, but didn't do much of it after that.

His college teammate is current Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker, which may have had some impact on this signing decision. The Broncos are expected to sign another quarterback should Kyle Orton be traded. Weber is more likely to wind up on the practice squad than on the active roster at any point in this upcoming season.
