Colorado State vs. Air Force: Jim McElwain wary of special teams

Ron Chenoy-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Colorado State coach Jim McElwain was disappointed at the special teams effort from the Rams against Utah State.

The Colorado State Rams will be seeking not only their first conference win of the season, but their first win of the season at all when they face the Air Force Falcons on Saturday.

CSU's offense and defense have both had their problems, but head coach Jim McElwain made it clear at his weekly news conference that special teams were particularly killing the Rams. Utah State picked up 131 yards on special teams during their win over the Rams, a win that could have been much closer than 31-19 had CSU done better at keeping the ball away from them:

"We need to get better at what we're doing there," McElwain said. "Those hidden yardages, which we've talked about from the start, that's very disappointing. Because I felt from an effort standpoint on offense and defense, we did some good things."

They may have their hands full against Air Force's decent special teams unit. Air Force's kick off returner Anthony LaCoste has put up a 29.9 yard average so far this season, good for third in the Mountain West.
