Jim McElwain Was 'Really Excited' After First Spring Practice

The first day of spring practice concluded on Wednesday for Colorado St. Rams and of course there is a lot of positivity going around. Head coach Jim McElwain will be busy installing his system and gets to see it in action shortly, and McElwain was pleased with the effort on the first spring practice:

"The guys hit the field with the right attitude and that's what you can hope for right now," McElwain said. "Obviously there is a lot to work on. You can tell its been a long time since they've been in practice. One thing you get when you go to bowl games is you practice into December and there is less lag time. You could tell we were awful rusty. For the most part I was really excited to be out here and I love the way the guys approached it."

One item that McElwain really wanted to stress is the little things such as tucking in shirts, because if those small steps are followed then the big stuff will just happen. On the first day of practice not much happens as the teams are not in full pads, basically a bunch of drills.

There was some bad news on the first day of spring practice with senior linebacker Michael Kawulok no longer on the team. Kawulok suffered a severe knee injury last spring and he went through the offseason conditioning drills but ultimately he applied for a medical hardship. His career is over, but by getting the hardship he can participate with the program and is essentially another coach on the field.
