Colorado State made the NCAA Tournament in 2012, and they're in an early 2013 NCAA Tournament field projection from Joe Lunardi.

With the 2012 college basketball season in the books, ESPN's Joe Lunardi is already turning his attention to next season and the 2013 NCAA Tournament field. In his latest projection, the Colorado State Rams are in the field, though they are listed as one of the last four teams in. That also means the Rams would play in the opening round in Dayton, Ohio.
The Rams are hoping to build on their appearance in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, but they'll have to do it without head coach Tim Miles, who took the Nebraska job during the offseason. Fortunately, new Rams coach Larry Eustachy has plenty of experience leading schools to the NCAA Tournament, and he is coming off a year in which he led Southern Mississippi to an at-large bid.

Having won the 2012 Pac-12 Tournament this weekend in Los Angeles, the Colorado Buffaloes know for a fact that they're in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, but their seeding is still up in the air. In his most recent 2012 Bracketology update for SB Nation, Chris Dobbertean predicts that the Buffaloes will secure a 12 seed, along with fellow automatic qualifiers in the Long Beach State 49ers and at-large selections in the Texas Longhorns and BYU Cougars. In his mock bracket, Dobbertean has Colorado facing the Murray St. Racers in the tournament's first round.
But with that 12 seed, the Buffaloes may not be the highest seeded team in Colorado. In Dobbertean's bracket, the Colorado St. Rams check in as an 11 seed, which is a solid, relaxing placement considering where they stood a few weeks ago. In his Bracketology projection, Dobbertean has the Rams facing the Vanderbilt Commodores, though that may change if Vandy can knock off the Kentucky Wildcats on Sunday afternoon, claiming the SEC Tournament championship.

The Colorado State Rams have done quite a bit to help their NCAA Tournament chances in recent weeks, but they were eliminated from the Mountain West Tournament on Friday, which left some lingering uncertainty. ESPN's Joe Lunardi had CSU solidly in the field of 68 in his projection prior to that game, and as of 6:30 p.m. MT Saturday night, Lunardi still believes the Rams are in good shape.

The Rams are one of four MWC teams included in the field, and they do not appear to be dangerously near the fringe, as Lunardi does not list them among the last four teams in the field.

The Colorado St. Rams must wait until Sunday evening to find out their spot in the 2012 NCAA Tournament after losing to the San Diego St. Aztecs on Friday night in the 2012 Mountain West Tournament -- that is, if there is a spot for them. The Rams, 20-11 overall, likely have done enough to secure a low-teens seed in the tournament. That's how Chris Dobbertean has it projected in his latest 2012 Bracketology.
The Rams make it as a No. 12 seed against the No. 5 Murray St. Racers in the West region. The winner of that game waits for the team that emerges between the No. 4 Wisconsin Badgers or the No. 13 Drexel Dragons and N.C. State Wolfpack. The latter two teams are playing in a First Four matchup in Dayton, OH.
The Rams are part of the last four teams in that avoid that trip to Dayton. Will the actual selection committee see things that way, too?

ESPN's Joe Lunardi has updated his 2012 NCAA Tournament bracket projection to reflect the games played on Thursday, which included a win by Colorado State over TCU in the Mountain West Conference Tournament. As a result of that, and the fact that CSU has really helped itself in recent weeks with wins over New Mexico and UNLV, the Rams are more comfortably in the field of 68 than they have been in some time.

Lunardi has the Rams in the field as a No. 11 seed, which means they avoid the "First Four" mid-week games in Dayton. The Rams may also be able to afford a loss to San Diego State on Friday night, though a win there would leave no doubt as to CSU's NCAA status on Sunday.

The Colorado State Rams have delivered down the stretch of the season, buttressing their solid RPI standing with more quality wins; they beat New Mexico and UNLV at home in the last couple of weeks and they took care of must-win games against Air Force and TCU. The TCU win came in the MWC Tournament, and advanced the Rams to the semifinal round, where they will have a chance to beat San Diego State for another quality win.

But beating SDSU may not be necessary for an at-large bid to the 2012 NCAA Tournament at this point, though the Rams' situation is still somewhat fluid. CBS Sports' Jerry Palm updated his bracket projection late Thursday night and has CSU in the NCAAs as a No. 11 seed.

Most expect the Colorado State Rams to take care of business tonight against the TCU Horned Frogs in the first round of the Mountain West Tournament, which tips-off at 3:30 p.m. locally. SB Nation's Chris Dobbertean's latest Bracketology for the NCAA's Field of 68 sees the Rams as a potential No. 12 seed. Right now, he has Colorado State playing fifth-seeded Florida State in the South regional.
Dobbertean has CSU as one of the last four teams to receive byes, meaning they won't be apart of the "First Four" action that leads into the traditional field of 64.
Several teams that are just avoiding an extra game in Dayton, like Colorado State, Southern Mississippi, USF and the bracket's two Pac-12 teams, Washington and California, will have chances to move up, or down, as Thursday unfolds. Unfortunately, for BYU and West Virginia fans, their teams will have to sit and wait to see if they fall into this group.

The Colorado St. Rams remain the state's best hope to make the 2012 NCAA Tournament, but even that is not certain. The only way the team can legitimately make the Big Dance would be to win the 2012 Mountain West Tournament, thus gaining the conference's automatic bid. But they have made a strong case to be the Mountain West's fourth team in, its third at-large. So, the Rams remain in the latest SB Nation 2012 Bracketology projection as a No. 12 seed.
In this prediction, the Rams would be in the South region to play the No. 5 Florida St. Seminoles in Nashville, Tenn. Should they pull off the upset, the Rams would potentially play one of three teams since a First Four matchup comes in at this bracket: the No. 4 Wisconsin Badgers or the No. 13 South Florida Bulls or the No. 13 Xavier Musketeers.
The Denver Pioneers lost out on an NCAA Tournament bid after falling to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Monday night. They will now settle for a lesser tournament after stopping one game short of the Sun Belt championship game. The Colorado Buffaloes will need to win the Pac-12 to play in the NCAA Tournament.

By taking care of business in a win over Air Force on March 3, the Colorado State Rams appear to have taken themselves off the bubble. The Rams have won four of their last five games, highlighted by a 71-63 victory over New Mexico on Feb. 21. Ever since, Colorado State has been pegged as a team likely to grab an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. At this point, the rhetoric surrounding the team is where they'll be seeded, not if they'll make it.
In Chris Dobbertean's latest Bracketology update over at SB Nation, the Rams are a No. 12 seed matched up against Murray State. Given the NCAA Tournament's long history of 12-5 upsets, the pairing should fit Colorado State just right.
Before the Rams can worry about their spot in the NCAA Tournament, they still have to play in the Mountain West Tournament. Colorado State meets TCU on Tuesday in their first game.

It must be good to be the Denver Pioneers right now. They have a clear path to the 2012 Sun Belt Tournament championship after Sunday's contests saw the No. 1 Middle Tenn. St. Blue Raiders and the No. 2 Ark.-Little Rock Trojans eliminated from the postseason. At No. 3, the Pioneers are the highest remaining seed and the projected Sun Belt team for the NCAA Tournament.
Well, for the latter part of that, the Pioneers are projected as a No. 14 seed in Chris Dobbertean's latest Bracketology 2012 projection at SB Nation. The Pioneers find themselves in the West region with a first round game against the No. 3 seed Georgetown Hoyas. The Hoyas need to go through the Big East Tournament first before they can lock in that high of a seed, but the Pioneers are probably in the right seed should the gain the Sun Belt's automatic bid.

If Colorado State does indeed make the NCAA Tournament, they can point to Wednesday night's win over UNLV as the reason why. Ever since the Rams pulled the upset, they've been all over Bracketology discourse, with most experts agreeing that Colorado State should be in the field of 68.
One of those experts is SB Nation's Chris Dobbertean, who has the Rams as one of the last four teams in the field.
Colorado State (18-10, 7-6 MWC, RPI: 22, SOS: 4, non-conf. SOS: 40)
The Rams jumped back into the field after Wednesday's home win over UNLV, which completed a Moby Arena sweep of the top three from the Mountain West. Colorado State's computer numbers are excellent, but that's more because of the teams they've lost to (at Duke, UNLV, New Mexico, Northern Iowa and Southern Miss. at home) than their wins. Plus, a 4-9 record away from Fort Collins isn't something to be proud of. Tim Miles' team has one last chance to improve upon that mark before the Mountain West tournament, as a difficult trip to Air Force is on tap for Saturday.

The Colorado State Rams haven't made the NCAA Tournament since 2003, but last night's 16-point second half comeback to upset No. 17 UNLV has the Rams in prime position to return to March Madness.

Yahoo's Jeff Eisenberg looked at Wednesday night's biggest winners among the bubble teams, and he has the Rams No. 2, only behind South Florida (who upset Louisville). Eisenberg likes CSU's chances, but concludes the Rams "still have work to do".
The Rams have a strong RPI, an 18-10 record and three wins in six tries against San Diego State, New Mexico and UNLV -- the three teams ahead of them in the Mountain West standings. Others are ready to declare that Colorado State has punched its ticket, but here's why I still think the Rams still have work to do: They are 2-9 in true road games and their best win away from home came against UTEP.

The Colorado St. Rams are on the bubble for the 2012 NCAA Tournament as the Mountain West's fourth team for the event, but did the victory over the No. 17 UNLV Rebels on Wednesday night secure the team a spot in the tourney? CBS Sports' Jeff Borzello thinks it's all but certain:
Methinks the Rams have punched their ticket to the NCAA tournament. They needed another marquee win for the ledger, and last week's win over New Mexico got them closer. On Wednesday, Colorado State came back from a 16-point deficit to knock off UNLV and give the Rams a 3-3 split against the top three of the league. The Rams have a great computer profile and just need to win at Air Force in the season finale to feel comfortable about a bid.
The Rams did go 3-3 against the top three teams in the Mountain West (New Mexico, San Diego State and UNLV), but those three wins all came at Moby Arena. The road losses were never close game for the Rams.

Still, the Rams had the No. 27 RPI entering this week and should see that improve with the victory over UNLV. Avoiding a loss to Air Force on Saturday will help make up for the bad road loss to the Boise St. Broncos, 70-69, a couple weeks ago.

Judging by some of the disagreement among bracketologists over Colorado State's NCAA tournament worthiness, the Rams may prove a tough case for the selection committee come Selection Sunday. ESPN's Joe Lunardi has the Rams out of the tournament in his latest bracket projection, while CBS's Jerry Palm has Colorado State as one of the last four teams in the field.

But that's just another indicator of the tenuous nature of Colorado State's current position. The Rams can strengthen their argument with a win over UNLV on Wednesday; failing that, a good run in the Mountain West Conference tournament might be necessary for a bid.

Colorado State can't quite seem to get over the hump as far as NCAA tournament bracketologists are concerned. The Rams recently upset New Mexico, which helped their standing, but they were unable to follow that up with a road win over San Diego State. The Rams are treading water in Mountain West play, 6-0 at home and 0-6 on the road.

ESPN's Joe Lunardi updated his NCAA tournament bracket projections on Monday and lists CSU among the first four teams left out of the field of 68, which is where the Rams were this time last week.
Colorado State can still pick up a quality win over UNLV before the regular season ends, and the conference tournament could provide opportunities for more resume-builders as well.
