Colorado State's 2012 Class Ranks Ninth In Mountain West

The 2012 recruiting class for the Colorado St. Rams was not expected to be one of the best of the Mountain West, but it also was not expected to finish at the bottom of the league either.

However, having three straight 3-9 seasons and bringing in a new coaching staff late in the recruiting process usually does not improve a class ranking -- unless that new coach is Urban Meyer.

Below is the average rankings from the major recruiting services for the Mountain West.

Ranking School Scout Rivals 247 Sports
1. Boise St. Broncos No. 1, No. 56 overall No. 1, NR No. 1, No. 62 overall
2. San Diego St. Aztecs No. 3, No. 73 overall No. 5, NR No. 2, No. 74 overall
3. Nevada Wolf Pack No. 6, No. 101 overall No. 2, NR No. 3, No. 79 overall
4. New Mexico Lobos No. 5, No. 94 overall No. 3, NR No. 4, No. 85 overall
5. Air Force Falcons No. 3, No. 80 overall No. 8, NR No. 5, No. 86 overall
6. UNLV Rebels No. 4, No. 87 overall No. 7, NR No. 6, No. 94 overall
7. Hawaii Warriors No. 7, No. 103 overall No. 4, NR No. 7, No. 97 overall

Colorado State Football Recruiting: Jim McElwain On The Rams' 2012 Class

The Colorado State Rams have already landed 23 players for their 2012 recruiting class, an impressive figure for new head coach Jim McElwain. Previously the defensive coordinator at national champion Alabama, he recently held a press conference to discuss his first recruiting class as Rams head coach.

To McElwain, his first recruiting class is about finding well-rounded players with an excitement for the game.

First we looked for solid pacesetters. Not only good all-around players but guys who push rest of team. We found guys driven to be successful, and who were excited to be part of our family and the CSU community.

But he also noted that an effort was made to target bigger players so the Rams could play a more physical game, particularly in certain regions of the nation.

We did feel like we needed to get a little bigger. Lightweights don't fight heavyweights. I feel like we did a really good job of handling this state, as well as in California and Texas.

Ultimately, it's probably going to take some time for McElwain's new system, and his new players, to really have a substantial effect on the field. But after the success that he had with the Crimson Tide, there's a good deal of excitement in Fort Collins right now.

College Football Recruiting: Official Commits Roll In For Rams

New Colorado State Rams head coach Jim McElwain won't truly get to flex his muscles in recruiting until the 2013 class, but he has been working the recruiting trail hard as the 2012 period winds down, and today he started to see that work pay off, as National Letters of Intent began rolling into the football offices in Fort Collins.

The list of official Rams commitment is headed by a crop of players from California, Texas and, of course, Colorado. Of the thirteen to have faxed their Letters of Intent, six play defense and seven play offense, as McElwain begins to build a foundation on both sides of the ball.

Colorado State Football Recruiting: Jim McElwain Looks To Close Out 2012 Committments With A Strong Signing Day

The Colorado St. Rams will be able to see the fruits of Jim McElwain's success in a shortened recruiting season on Wednesday during National Signing Day. McElwain became the new Colorado State head coach during the middle of December, just a short few weeks after Steve Fairchild was fired following his third consecutive 3-9 season.

It will be far too early to judge how well McElwain is as a recruiter given the month and a half (minus recruiting dead periods) he had once he assumed the head coaching position. He had his coaching staff take shape over that same time and was able to get a few recruits to commit to the school. And this was while he helped the Alabama Crimson Tide prepare for what was the school's eventual BCS National Championship. That must surely have been involved in McElwain's pitches to recruits.

2012 Colorado State Recruiting: Rams Have 15 Verbal Commits Heading Into Signing Day

The Colorado St. Rams 2012 class is sitting at 15 players which is low compared to the last four years when they had at least 22 during that span, so look for Colorado State to add some more players come singing day. The top two players for Colorado State are a trio of three-star recruits in tight end Brett Jordan, wide receiver Jordon Vaden and linebacker Kevin Davis. However, the star rating for the non-BCS is not as important as their BCS counterparts, but it is more important to where Colorado State stands within the Mountain West.

For Colorado State those rankings within the Mountain West are not good as they are ranked last by 247 Sports and Rivals with Scout having them ranked No. 7 in the Mountain West. Those poor rankings could be traced back to having three straight losing seasons and a coaching change. These rankings can change once the faxes start coming in, and just a reminder that these are 17- and 18-year-old kids so there is a possibility of them changing their minds. On the eve of signing day here is the list of verbal commitments that Colorado State has so far.

The star ranking comes from Rivals, ESPN, Scout and 247 Sports:

Colorado State Gains Former Texas A&M Aggies RB Mister Jones

The Colorado St. Rams picked up a transfer from the Texas A&M Aggies. Running back Mister Jones, who left the program in September, announced on Friday that he is transferring to the Rams, reports the Denver Post. Jones made the announcement on his Facebook profile and let everyone know that head coach Jim McElwain and athletic director Jack Graham were instrumental in his decision.

Jones graduated from Littleton High School a couple of years ago and was originally going to play for the Colorado Buffaloes. But he changed his mind and wound up at Texas A&M. But in September he left the school for personal reasons.

Jones was a redshirt freshman this fall.

Colorado State Recruiting: Jim McElwain's Appearance In BCS Title Game Could Help Land Commits

With the 2012 BCS National Championship Game over and the Alabama Crimson Tide the No. 1 team in the nation, Jim McElwain is no longer the Tide's offensive coordinator. He will now be the new Colorado St. Rams head football coach, nearly one month after he was hired.

McElwain had just a few days to recruit before a blackout date began, but now he can take the final few weeks before National Signing and attempt to use the pull of his Alabama offense against LSU to draw in recruits to Fort Collins. As John Henderson over at the Denver Post believes, a spike in recruiting could occur because of this:

Starting in the second half, Jim McElwain and CSU were mentioned in the same sentence on the broadcast about a dozen times. Maybe I’m overestimating the power of television but I have to think that will have an effect in homes of Valor Christian and Mullen athletes, not to mention every household in Texas, Florida and California.

Selling recruits on coming to Fort Collins will be difficult given the short time McElwain has to do so, but all it could take to start a recruiting pipeline of top athletes is one top high schooler to say, "Yes, Coach McElwain, I want to help you build Colorado State into a top program."

Colorado State Recruiting: Joe Hansley Commits To Rams

New Colorado State head coach Jim McElwain picked up an in-state commitment on Wednesday when Highlands Ranch's Joe Hansley chose to play football for the Rams. McElwain had made an in-home visit that impressed Hansley:

"(McElwain) was really confident in his plan to change what goes on at CSU — making it more of a winning tradition and start bringing some better players in there and winning some games," Hansley said.

Hansley primarily played running back and defensive back for Highlands Ranch and was told by McElwain that he would be used as a slot back in the CSU offense. McElwain, who is still in the early stages of getting his Rams program off the ground, also encouraged Hansley to help in recruiting other high school players.
