Utah Uses Strong Second And Third Quarters To Beat Colorado State, 59-6

Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Jordan Wynn threw three touchdown passes, as the ninth-ranked Utah Utes kept their home winning streak going with a 59-6 victory over the Colorado State Rams in Mountain West Conference action from Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Wynn completed 23-of-29 passes for 321 yards for the Utes (7-0, 4-0 MWC), who have won 21 straight games in their own building dating back to September of 2007. Terrance Cain came on in relief and connected on 9-of-11 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown.

Eddie Wide carried the ball nine times for 71 yards and a score and also caught a touchdown pass. Matt Asiata rushed for 39 yards and two TDs on seven carries, while Sausan Shakerin carried the ball four times for 80 yards and a score.

DeVonte Christopher caught five passes for 111 yards and a touchdown while Shaky Smithson hauled in five passes for 72 yards and a score for Utah, which has won eight in a row dating back to last season.

True freshman Pete Thomas completed 19-of-28 passes for 185 yards and an interception for the Rams (2-6, 1-3), who have been held to 10 points or fewer five times already in 2010.

Utah Uses An Onside Kick To Extend Their Lead

Pete Thomas drove the Rams down the field against Utah and was able to set up a field goal to cut into Utah’s 7-3 lead. The drive mixed the passing game with the running game for the score.

Then the Utes being the Utes moved the ball down the field and scored a touchdown on a Jordan Wynn pass to running back Matt Asiata.

Utah’s coach Whittingham brought out a bag of tricks and did an onside kick, which was recovered by Ute kicker Joe Phillips. That onside recovery allowed the Utes to kick a field goal to go up 17-3.

Colorado State Trail Utah Only 7-0 After One

Colorado State gave up a touchdown on Utah's first possession, but since then they have forced the Utes to punt. One long drive to control the ball kept Utah's potent offense off the field. Rams quarterback Pete Thomas has had a solid game so far by going 4-of-6 for 43 yards in the first quarter.

Perhaps the Rams are holding off the inevitable, but after one quarter they are hanging around with the Utes.

Utah Strikes First On One-Yard Touchdown Run

Not even the steady rain can stop the no. 9 Utah Utes from marching down the field and scoring on a one yard Matt Asiata touchdown run. Utah started with some good field position on the opening kick as Shaky Smithson returned the kick 26 yards. Then the Utes used a heavy dose of Jordan Wynn to move the ball down the field in the air by going three-of-four for 36 yards. Once the Utes moved inside the ten, running backs Eddie Wide and Matt Asiata finished off the job with a one-yard touchdown run on fourth down by Matt Asiata.
