Rockies Vs. Padres Game Recap: Colorado On Wrong End Of Wild Game In San Diego

The Colorado Rockies fell to the San Diego Padres, 12-11, in a wild affair on Sunday at Petco Park in San Diego, Calif. Padres first baseman Yonder Alonso delivered a walkoff against Rockies reliever Matt Belisle in the bottom of the ninth inning.

It was a game of runs, in more ways than one, as the Rockies allowed the Padres to score 10 unanswered runs at one point before manufacturing a stretch of six of their own.

After taking a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the third inning thanks to home runs from Alex White and Matt McBride, Colorado found itself trailing 11-5 after San Diego exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning, which followed consecutive one-run frames. Chase Headley's two-run homer off of Matt Reynolds capped off the huge inning for the Padres. Adam Ottavino's line took the brunt of the damage, as his day concluded with seven runs allowed, on six hits and a walk.

Fortunately for the Rockies, they were able to put together a huge inning of their own, scoring six runs in the eighth inning. The big blow in that inning was a grand slam off the bat of Josh Rutledge, which tied the game at 11. The Rox had a chance to take the lead in the ninth, as Chris Nelson led off with a single and Andrew Brown followed with a walk. However, Padres relievers Luke Gregerson and Joe Thatcher would strike out the next three hitters, putting an end to the threat.

That set the stage for some hometown heroics, as Alonso's game-winning line drive plated Everth Cabrera, whose one-out single in the bottom of the ninth got the rally started.

With Sunday's defeat, the Rockies have now lost four consecutive series. Their road trip continues on Monday, as they travel to San Francisco to start a four-game set against the NL West-leading Giants.
