The Colorado Rockies completed a four-game sweep of the New York Mets on Thursday afternoon by picking up a 1-0 victory. Chris Nelson's RBI single in the eighth inning was all the difference in the game.
Tyler Colvin started the inning with a triple and didn't need to waste much more time on the bases before scoring. Nelson came through with a single to center field in the next at-bat to break the scoreless tie. Bobby Parnell, as a result, took the loss for the Mets. He relieved rookie Collin McHugh, who struck out nine and allowed just two hits in seven innings during his major league debut.
Tyler Chatwood started the game for the Rockies, but he pitched just three innings before Adam Ottavino relieved him. Rex Brothers picked up his eighth after pitching two innings. Will Harris followed and Matt Belisle closed out the game, picking up his first save of the year.
The Rockies (50-73, 24-34 away) play an afternoon game (12:20 p.m. MT) against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Friday.

For the second straight season, the Colorado Rockies are on the verge of sweeping a four game series at Citi Field against the New York Mets. Last season, the story was shortstop Troy Tulowitzki homering four times during the series. This year, with Tulowitzki looking to rejoin the roster in September after missing most of the season due to a groin injury, it has been the young players for Colorado that have stepped up, with catcher Wilin Rosario and outfielder Tyler Colvin leading the charge.
The Rockies will turn to the youngest member of their rotation in the final game of the series as 22 year old Tyler Chatwood (3-3, 5.46) takes the mound. Chatwood enjoyed two wonderful starts on the last road trip -- only allowing a single earned run in 11 innings -- but slipped in his last start at Coors Field, allowing six earned runs against the Miami Marlins.
The Mets will send rookie pitcher Collin McHugh to the mound for his MLB debut. The 25 year old has pitched in both AA and AAA this season, maintaining a 2.88 ERA between the two levels.
First pitch is scheduled for 11:10am MT.
There is no television broadcast for this game, but it will be aired on 850 KOA.

The Colorado Rockies' Dexter Fowler sprained his ankle on Wednesday night against the New York Mets and had to leave the game in the fourth inning. X-rays came up negative, and Fowler said that he doesn't expect to spend any time on the DL, via Troy Renck of the Denver Post.
It's the same ankle that Fowler sprained in May in the Miami dugout. He left the game on crutches and will have to miss a few games.
"It doesn't feel good right now, but I knew it wasn't broken. I have sprained it plenty of times in basketball," said Fowler, whose X-Rays came back negative. "It's just one of those things that happens."
...
"It's tough. But the guys are playing amazing right now," said Fowler after the Rockies won for the 11th time in 16 games.
Renck says that the concern was about Fowler potentially straining his Achilles as well. If it's only an ankle sprain, consider the center fielder lucky.

The Colorado Rockies defeated the New York Mets 5-2 on Wednesday night. Carlos Torres (2-1) picked up the win in New York as the Rockies scored four runs in the final three innings.
Rockies catcher Wilin Rosario kept the Rockies afloat until his teammates' bats were awakened. Rosario knocked Jonathan Herrera home with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth, then started the late-inning scoring barrage with a solo home run to open the seventh inning.
The Rockies posted the victory despite losing center fielder Dexter Fowler to injury with a sprained ankle in the fourth inning. No further update on his status is known at this time.
Colorado added insurance runs in the ninth inning when Tyler Colvin scored on a Chris Nelson single, who would later score on a Josh Rutledge double to right field.
Jeff Francis pitched five strong innings for the Rockies. Despite the no-decision, Francis gave up just one run while striking out four in the start. Reliever Ramon Ramirez (2-3) takes the loss for the Mets, and Rafael Betancourt picked up his 25th save on the year for Colorado.
The Rockies pick up the series win with three straight over the Mets and go for the series sweep tomorrow at 11:10 a.m. MT. Tyler Chatwood (3-3, 5.46 ERA) takes the hill for Colorado, facing off against the Mets' Collin McHugh (0-0).

Colorado Rockies centerfielder Dexter Fowler was forced to leave Wednesday night's game against the New York Mets with an apparent ankle injury in the fourth inning.
Troy Renck of the Denver Post took to Twitter to report that Fowler sprained his right ankle on the play in question:
Fowler has sprained right ankle. ...If that's all it is, he would be lucky...
— Troy Renck, Rockies (@TroyRenck) August 23, 2012
Renck added that it looked worse than when Fowler turned his ankle on a stair in the dugout in Miami back in May.
The Rockies replaced Fowler in the lineup with infelder Jordan Pacheco, moving Tyler Colvin to centerfield.
Colorado currently leads 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, after scoring two runs in the top of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie.

Colorado Rockies first baseman Jason Giambi will join fellow injured teammate Troy Tulowitzki on a rehab assignment this Friday, according to Tracy Ringolsby.
Earlier today, it was reported that Tulowitzki would report to the Double-A Tulsa Drillers this weekend to start his assignment. Now, he'll be accompanied by the 41-year-old Giambi, who has posted a .241/.380/.329 batting line in 2012. Giambi injured his left quadriceps on July 23, which affected his chances of being dealt to a contender at the deadline.
Giambi, whose mutual option was exercised following the 2011 season, has just one home run this year in 100 plate appearances, after a solid 2011 season in which he hit 13 in just 152. Over the course of his 18-year career, Giambi has homered 429 times and has a lifetime .927 OPS.

Colorado Rockies outfielder Dexter Fowler left Wednesday's game against the New York Mets in the fourth inning with an apparent ankle injury.
Fowler appeared to roll his ankle while heading into second base after singling and advancing on a throw to third. Infielder Jordan Pacheco was brought in as a pinch-runner to replace Fowler, who limped off the field while noticeably in pain. The Rockies trailed the Mets 1-0 when the injury occurred, but were able to tie the game two batters later.
Fowler, 26, is in the midst of a breakout season for the Rockies. Through Tuesday's action, he was hitting .306/.392/.499 in 435 plate appearances. The Rockies have dealt with numerous injuries during the 2012 season; among others, star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki hasn't played since May 30 while dealing with hip and groin injuries, and first baseman Todd Helton is out for the season following hip surgery.

Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez is back in the lineup on Wednesday after missing four games following the death of his grandfather. He will play left field and hit in the cleanup spot as the Rockies look to win a road series over the New York Mets after taking the first two games of the set.
The Rockies are 3-1 in CarGo's absence, with the only loss coming on Saturday vs. the Miami Marlins at Coors Field. To accommodate the All-Star slugger's return, the Rox optioned Guillermo Moscoso to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Here are the full lineups:

The Colorado Rockies enter Game 3 against the New York Mets on a three-game winning streak, fresh off the return of Jhoulys Chacin to the rotation. On Tuesday night, Chacin allowed one run on four hits in six innings. That was exactly the start Chacin needed in his return and the Rockies greatly benefited from it. Will they receive something similar from Jeff Francis on Wednesday evening?
Francis (4-4, 6.07 ERA) enters this game with a rocky August performance. He's allowed at least three runs in each of his four starts and has pitched into the sixth inning in only one of them. The Rockies won the latter game, 9-6, against the Milwaukee Brewers. In his last start, Francis allowed four runs in five innings in a 6-5 loss to the Miami Marlins.
The Mets turn to rookie Matt Harvey (2-3, 3.00 ERA), the seventh overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft. He is making his sixth career start and snapped a three-game losing streak with a win in his last start. He allowed one run and struck out eight in 7.2 innings against the Cincinnati Reds at the Great American Ball Park. This start will be just his second at Citi Field.
Game time is scheduled for 5:10 p.m. MT. ROOT Sports and 850 KOA will have live coverage.

Jhoulys Chacin shut down the New York Mets on Tuesday night in his best start of the season following an injury. Can he keep that form going for the rest of the year and into the future?

The Colorado Rockies hadn't gotten on base through five innings, but exploded for four runs in the sixth en route to a 6-2 victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday night.
Mets starting pitcher Chris Young had a perfect game before the sixth inning, when, as New York Mets blog Amazin' Avenue says, it all fell apart:
Chris Young had a perfect game through five innings. The Mets scored a run in support that at least made it look like the team would not lose if Young pulled off the virtually impossible feat. And then the game went down the tubes in a matter of seconds in the top of the sixth inning.
The Rockies got an infield single to break up the perfecto, and after another single, Young fielded a sacrifice bunt and threw it over Daniel Murphy's head. One run scored on the play, and three more runs scored in the inning. The Mets went on to make several other awful plays in the game and went on to lose.
Center fielder Dexter Fowler had two RBIs and it was right fielder Charlie Blackmon who broke up the perfect game on an infield single. Starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin earned his first win of the season.

Chris Young took a perfect game into the sixth inning against the Rockies, but they finally managed to push some hits and more importantly, some runs out of him.
The Rockies started the inning by putting a few men on base and a throwing error from Young put the Rockies on the board. Following that, the Rox strung together hits from Charlie Blackmon, Dexter Fowler and Ramon Hernandez to get three more runs out of the inning before Young finally shut them down.
Jhoulys Chacin continued his solid first game back in the bottom of the sixth by working quickly to knock the Mets out and keep them from coming back. He is currently at 73 pitches, only two below his rough 75-pitch limit. Assuming he doesn't make it into the bottom of the seventh, he'll end the game with a very impressive line of three hits and one run allowed in six innings with two strikeouts and no walks.

Nobody was quite sure what to expect when Jhoulys Chacin came back for the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday after missing several months of time due to injury. Chacin had been almost of ace quality for the Rockies in 2011, but his start to 2012 had been awful, with an 0-3 record and several bad meltdowns.
Fortunately, he has been mostly solid through the first four innings of his game against the Mets. After a clean first three innings, he gave up two hits and a home run in the fourth, but that has been the only blemish on his record so far, as he has struck out two, walked none and allowed no other hits in the game so far. The Mets are currently up 1-0 on that home run.
Most importantly, he has been throwing the pitches for strikes -- 33 of his 45 pitches have hit the strike zone or have been swung on and missed. One of the biggest concerns at the start of the year for Chacin was his high number of walks and, at times, bad pitch placement.
Chacin will likely have a pitch count of about 75 in his first game back, so he will have a couple more innings to get back in the swing of things. Colorado's offense needs to solve Chris Young if they want to get back in the game though, as Young has been perfect through five.

After winning the first game of their four-game series against the New York Mets, the Colorado Rockies will look to continue their decent form from recent weeks in Game 2 on Tuesday.
Jhoulys Chacin (0-3, 7.30 ERA) will face off against Chris Young (3-6, 4.50 ERA) in his first game in a very long time. Chacin has been sidelined with injury for most of the year after he started the season with some very ineffective starts. It's going to be interesting seeing how he does in his first start after such a long layoff, but the Rockies could use something similar to his better-looking starts from 2011.
The Rockies offense could use a better performance from the offense than they got in the first game, as well, but being against a pitcher that isn't R.A. Dickey should help out their cause in that regard.
The game will be at Citi Field at 5:10 p.m. MT.

The Colorado Rockies opened their road series against the New York Mets with a 3-1 victory on Monday night at Citi Field. The Rockies are now on a two-game winning streak.
The Mets and Rockies played to a 1-1 tie through seven full innings on a first-inning Daniel Murphy RBI single for the Mets and a fifth-inning Tyler Colvin home run (14) in the fifth inning. However, the Mets suffered a series of defensive miscues in the top of the eighth, allowing the Rockies to score the go-ahead run.
Jonathan Herrera reached first base on a bunt single and, on the same play, moved to second on a throwing error by pitcher Josh Edgin. Chris Nelson put down a sacrifice bunt to move Herrera over to third base. With Herrera on third, Edgin faced Charlie Blackmon, but it was catcher Kelly Shoppach who committed a passed ball, placing Herrera across home plate.
Ramon Hernandez added an insurance run with a Ramon Hernandez single in the top of the ninth.
Alex White (ND, 5.55 ERA) started and allowed the Murphy RBI single, but once again he failed to pitch past the fourth inning. He used 83 pitches to get 12 outs. Guillermo Moscoso relieved him as his tandem pitcher and struck out three over the next 2.1 innings. Rex Brothers picked up his seventh win after throwing 1.1 scoreless innings, giving way to Rafael Betancourt's 24th save.
Mets starter R.A. Dickey (ND, 2.82 ERA) allowed one run over seven innings and struck out six. His team had a chance in the eighth inning to tie the game when the bases were loaded, but Jordany Valdespin hit a grounder to first base and was out at the bag by the slightest of margins.
The Rockies (47-73, 21-34 away) continue this series on Tuesday at 5:10 p.m. MT. Jhoulys Chacin makes his return after a couple of months on the disabled list.

Through four innings, Mets ace R.A. Dickey has surrendered just two hits as the New York Mets hold a slim 1-0 lead over the Colorado Rockies in New York.
Dexter Fowler singled for the Rockies with one out in the top of the fourth, but Dickey secured a weak liner hit back to him by Andrew Brown, and doubled Fowler at first to end the inning. Dickey has struck out five on just 52 pitches.
The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the first, off the bat of Daniel Murphy. After Rockies pitcher Alex White coaxed two Mets into infield outs, David Wright doubled to left field. Murphy drove Wright home two batters later. That double has really been White's only mistake, as he's given up just three hits and struck out four through four innings himself.

Meanwhile, the Rockies bats will be without Eric Young, who injured a rib-cage muscle last night, as they face Mets ace R.A. Dickey. The knuckleballer is on a Cy Young pace with a 15-4 record and 2.89 ERA.

Colorado Rockies outfielder Eric Young Jr. will not be headed to the disabled list after last night's injury, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post. Young strained his left intercostal muscle -- located in his left rib cage -- in the first inning of last night's 3-2 win over the Miami Marlins. It is yet to be determined how long Young will be out.
After beginning the game in left field, Young apparently sustained the injury on a checked-swing strikeout in the bottom of the first. He did not return to the field in the second inning. Andrew Brown, who was just called up yesterday, took Young's place in left field. Brown went 1-3 on the night and is expected to get the start tonight.
Young had upped his season batting average to .318 before leaving last night's contest, hitting two home runs and driving in five RBI in the last seven days.
