Chris Nelson Cleared To Resume Baseball Activities

The Colorado Rockies have been without infielder Chris Nelson for over a week since he was placed on the 15-day disabled list with an irregular heartbeat. On Wednesday night, Nelson was cleared to resume baseball activities, reports the Denver Post's Troy Renck. He will spend a few days working on his conditioning before actually starting those baseball activities.

Nelson is hitting .256/.324/.411 with five home runs and 23 RBI in 58 games. He's played 45 games at third base, starting 26 of them. This is his third year appearing the majors, having been drafted with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2004 draft. Originally a shortstop, Nelson moved off the position as a result of Troy Tulowitzki's presence.

Rockies Vs. Diamondbacks: Colorado Avoids Sweep In Desert With 4-2 Victory

The Colorado Rockies have yet to win a series during the second half of the season, but after Wednesday night's 4-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks they still haven't been swept, either.

Jeff Francis (3-2, 4.97 ERA) pitched six-plus innings for the victory and stretched his pitch count to 97. He allowed both runs on home runs, one to Jason Kubel in the first inning and the other to Miguel Montero to start the seventh inning (which promptly led to his removal from the game). He struck out four and gave up a total of five hits.

Marco Scutaro provided most of the offense for the Rockies with his three-RBI night. He hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning after Dexter Fowler led off the game with a triple. With the game tied at one in the third inning, Scutaro doubled to left field to score two runs.

Rookie Wilin Rosario put another run on the board in the fourth inning when he hit his 16th home run of the season.

Adam Ottavino, Matt Belisle and Rafael Betancourt kept Arizona hitless over the remaining three innings of the game. Betancourt did allow a walk, but it proved of little consequence.

The Rockies (37-60, 17-31 away) are off on Thursday, but they return to Coors Field on Friday to host the Cincinnati Reds.

Colorado Rockies Announce Pitching Rotation For Weekend Series With Cincinnati Reds

The Colorado Rockies have struggled mightily since the All-Star break, and a weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds likely won't offer much relief. The Reds are leading the NL Central at the moment, and boast the second best run differential in the National League. Colorado, meanwhile, is just trying to avoid finishing with the worst record in baseball. The Rockies have a higher winning percentage than the Houston Astros, and exactly no one else.

The Rockies have announced the pitching rotation for the upcoming series, and the team is only throwing lefties. On Friday, Drew Pomeranz is scheduled to go. Colorado's 25-year old lefty Christian Friedrich will start on Saturday. Sunday will belong to Jonathan Sanchez, the 29-year old who is 1-7 this season with a 8.01 ERA and 2.08 WHIP.

Jonathan Herrera Injury: Colorado Rockies' Infielder Will Rehab In Triple-A

Jonathan Herrera is gradually getting better. The Colorado Rockies' second baseman/third baseman hasn't played since July 15 thanks to a staph infection in his left wrist. Herrera's stint on the 15-day disabled list started the following day. Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports the 28-year old Venezuelan is about to start a rehab assignment at Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Herrera is batting .246/.292/.385 in 45 games and 122 at-bats this season. He has three home runs and 33 RBI on the campaign. The Rockies are 2-6 since Herrera went down.

Jhoulys Chacin Injury: Rockies SP To Throw Bullpen Session, May Begin Rehab Assignment Soon

Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin will throw a bullpen session on Thursday in front of coaches, as Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports. If the session goes well, Chacin will likely begin a minor legue rehab assignment soon, bringing him one step closer to returning to the big leagues.

It's been a really rough year for Chacin, who was viewed as the Rockies' de facto ace coming into the season. After battling through five awful starts with the Rockies, the 24-year-old was demoted to Triple-A and ultimately placed on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.

Slowly but surely, Chacin has worked his way back into playing condition, as he already threw a successful bullpen session on Monday. Over the 2010-2011 seasons, Chacin posted a 3.48 ERA with 288 strikeouts and 148 walks in 331.1 innings pitched.

Rockies Vs. Diamondbacks: Colorado Hopes To Avoid Sweep In Desert

It has not been a kind trip to the Arizona desert for the Colorado Rockies. After losing the first two games of the three game series, Colorado hopes to avoid the sweep.

They will send veteran lefthander Jeff Francis (2-2, 5.24) to the mound. Francis had a rough outing against the San Diego Padres, surrendering five earned runs in five innings, but has been Colorado's most consistent starter this season since signing as a free agent in early June.

The Arizona Diamondbacks will send Trevor Cahill (8-8, 3.77) to the mound, looking to keep their slim postseason chances alive. They have won five straight games (and seven of their last 10) and currently sit only six games back of the division leading San Francisco Giants -- and only four games back of the National League Wild Card.

Rockies Vs. Diamondbacks Final Score: Colorado Falls Again At Chase Field

Make it six losses in the last seven games for the Colorado Rockies. On Tuesday at Chase Field, the Diamondbacks scored two in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the seventh to defeat Colorado 6-2 and drop the team to 36-60 on the season. The win moves Arizona to 49-48.

The Rockies took the lead in the fourth when Michael Cuddyer clubbed a homer off of Arizona starter Joe Saunders. Cuddyer would homer again for the Rockies in the sixth inning, and now has now gone deep 14 times on the season.

The Diamondbacks got RBI doubles by Stephen Drew and Willie Bloomquist in the fourth, and then a two-run homer by Chris Young in the fifth. Miguel Montero's two RBI single in the seventh put an exclamation point on the Arizona victory.

Rockies Place Jason Giambi On DL With Viral Infection, Call Up Edwar Cabrera

The Colorado Rockies have placed Jason Giambi on the disabled list after it was discovered that he has a viral infection. Giambi says he hasn't felt well for several weeks. Rockies Vs. Diamondbacks: Edwar Cabrera Expected To Pitch On Tuesday

The Colorado Rockies dropped Game 1 to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday, 6-3, essentially lost once the recently-acquired Jonathan Sanchez allowed a three-run triple to pitcher Ian Kennedy in the fourth inning. The Rockies turn to another left-hander on Tuesday, if as expected Edwar Cabrera rejoins the team.

Cabrera (0-1, 19.29 ERA) was called up back on June 27 for his first major league start. It did not go well. He allowed seven runs in 2.1 innings, serving up four gopher balls.

Joe Saunders (4-6, 3.58 ERA) allowed four runs in a 4-0 loss to the Rockies back on June 4, but he has been a model pitcher for going six innings in his starts. He has gone six innings in his last four starts since that loss, though he has gone just 1-2, the team 1-3 overall. He received just one run of offensive support in his two losses.

Rockies Vs. Diamondback Final Score: Jonathan Sanchez Lets Ian Kennedy's Bat Get Of Him In 6-3 Loss

Jonathan Sanchez (0-1, 11.25 ERA) made his first start for the Colorado Rockies on Monday after being acquired on Friday. Things started off well until he hit the fourth inning. By the end of the inning, the Rockies were down 5-0 and never recovered, ultimately losing 6-3.

In that fourth inning, the Diamondbacks entered with a 1-0 lead on a Paul Goldschmidt second-inning home run. Sanchez started off the fourth inning by walking Schmidt, who proceeded to steal second base. Justin Upton also drew a walk. Miguel Montero singled during the next at-bat, but he was out while running the basepaths since Goldschmidt and Upton only advanced one base each. Eventually, Ryan Roberts drew an intentional walk to load the bases. Diamondbacks starter Ian Kennedy cleared the bags with a triple, putting his team up 4-0. A Willie Bloomquist double right after that extended the lead to 5-0.

Sanchez went four innings while Carlos Torres followed with three scoreless innings. Mike Ekstrom allowed a sac fly in the eighth for the D'Backs' sixth run.

The Rockies scored its runs on Josh Rutledge's first career home run in the fifth inning, a Dexter Fowler single in the eighth inning, and a Carlos Gonzalez home run (20) in the ninth inning. Kennedy (8-8, 4.20 ERA) struck out seven and allowed two runs in eight innings.

The Rockies (36-59, 16-30 away) continue this series on Tuesday with the starter still undetermined. First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 p.m. MT.
