Jeff Francis Close To Signing With Colorado Rockies, Could Start Saturday

The Colorado Rockies are close to signing pitcher Jeff Francis, and the soft-tossing left-hander could start for the Rox on Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Colorado fans are very familiar with what Francis can do. The 31-year old was drafted in the first round by Colorado in 2002. He was on of the face's of the franchise for a decent stretch, throwing 183 inning or more for three straight seasons from 2005-2007.

Francis would prove to have his best season in '07, when he helped Colorado reach the World Series against the Boston Red Sox. Francis threw 215 innings that season, posting a 4.22 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. He finished the season 17-9.

Injuries have limited Francis since 2009. He spent last season with the Kansas City Royals, where he posted a 6-16 record and a 4.82 ERA in 31 starts. Francis had been in the Cincinnati Reds' farm system, where he went 3-6 with a 3.72 ERA in 77 innings before asking for his release last week to become a free agent.

Rockies Vs. Diamondbacks: Josh Outman Takes Mound As Rockies Aim For Series Win

The Colorado Rockies continue their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, hoping to rebound from Tuesday night's 10-0 blowout. Starter Jeremy Guthrie continued his miserable season with his worst start of the year, and the Rockies are searching for a quality appearance from their rotation.

Josh Outman (0-1. 5.63 ERA) will take the mound for just his second start with Colorado. When the Rockies acquired Outman (along with Guillermo Moscoso) from the Oakland Athletics this past offseason, they originally slotted him as a late inning bullpen arm. But with injuries sidelining much of the starting pitching depth, the Rockies have decided to stretch Outman back into a starter. Outman made his first start in a Rockies uniform on June 1 against the Los Angeles Dodgers and was very good, throwing 3.1 shutout innings and striking out five Dodger batters. While he will still be on a pitch count in this start against the Diamondbacks, expect Outman to throw around 70 pitches.

Rookie Wade Miley (6-2, 2.72 ERA) will get the start for Arizona. The 2008 1st round supplemental pick has been the Diamondbacks' best starting pitcher this season, though he allowed four earned runs against the Padres in his last start, albeit in 7.1 innings.

Colorado and Arizona split the first two games of the series. The Rockies are looking for their third straight series win.

MLB Trade Rumors: Rockies, Nationals Discuss John Lannan

The Washington Nationals, who bolstered the starting rotation this offseason by trading for Gio Gonzalez and signing Edwin Jackson, have been trying to move ex-rotation cog John Lannan for quite some time. They've been unable to find a suitor thus far, but according to Fox's Ken Rosenthal, the Colorado Rockies have recently discussed with the Nationals exactly what it would take to acquire the hurler.

According to Rosenthal, the Nationals are looking to get "at least one legitimate player" and are also expecting the team that receives Lannan to pick up the $3.5 million that he is owed for the rest of this year. So far, that has proved to be too steep of a price for the rest of baseball (including the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have also talked with Washington).

The Rockies, though, may be in desperate need of a major league-ready starter after releasing Jamie Moyer and discussing the possibility of bringing Jeff Francis back to Colorado. In 10 starts in Triple-A this season, Lannan is 4-5 with a 5.63 ERA.

Rockies Vs. Diamondbacks Final Score: Arizona Blows Out Colorado 10-0

The Colorado Rockies struck out 16 times on Tuesday night as they fell to the Arizona Diamonds 10-0 at Chase Field. Arizona starter Ian Kennedy improved his record to 5-5 by striking out 12 Colorado batters over just six innings to key the win. The Diamondbacks improve to 26-30 with the win, the Rockies fall to 24-31.

Arizona scored two in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth and three in the eighth. The Diamondbacks' offense produced 17 hits in the win. Aaron Hill, Jason Kubel and Gerardo Parra all homered for the D-Backs.

Rockies starter Jeremy Guthrie did not pitch well. The right-hander allowed seven earned runs and 11 hits over 3.1 innings.

Parra ended the night 4-for-5 with three runs and an RBI for the Diamondbacks.

Rockies Vs. Diamondbacks: Colorado Goes For 3 In A Row

The Colorado Rockies picked up a 4-0 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night to start a new winning streak. On Tuesday, the team will look to run that to three games when they return to the diamond at Chase Field.

Jeremy Guthrie (3-3, 5.48 ERA) is back on the mound after allowing five runs to the Houston Astros in an 11-5 victory on Thursday. Guthrie went seven innings and surrendered 12 to move his record to .500. Still, this was his third straight start in which he allowed at least five runs.

Ian Kennedy (4-5, 4.26 ERA) had a pretty crummy May, losing five straight games before closing out the month with a victory. In four of those five losses, the Diamondbacks scored just one run of offensive support for him, but he did allow multiple runs in all those starts. On May 30, Kennedy threw 7.2 innings of one-run ball against the San Francisco Giants

Rockies Injury Update: Juan Nicasio Heads To Have MRI, Jorge De La Rosa Out At Least A Week

The Colorado Rockies can't quite seem to get everyone back on their feet this season, and this week has been no exception. First Jorge De La Rosa cut short his latest minor league rehab assignment due to fluid build up in his surgically-repaired left elbow, then Juan Nicasio twisted his knee in a game against the Dodgers on Saturday. According to Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post, De La Rosa will be out "at least a week" but the team doesn't think it will be a long-term issue, while Nicasio is headed to the 15-day disabled list and will undergo an MRI on Tuesday.

In the meantime, RHP Guillermo Moscoso will replace Nicasio on the roster. The 28-year-old has appeared in two games this season, ceding 12 run and 16 hits in just 9.1 innings and posting 10 strikeouts in the process.

Rockies Vs. Diamondbacks Final Score: Colorado Downs Arizona 4-0

Christian Friedrich, Matt Belisle and Adam Ottavino combined to hold the Arizona Diamondbacks to a five-hit shutout as the Colorado Rockies earned a 4-0 victory on Monday night at Chase Field. The win moves the Rockies to 24-30, while Arizona falls to 25-30.

The Rockies scored one in the first, two in the second and one in the fourth. After Dexter Fowler led off the game with a triple, shortstop Marco Scutaro drove in the center fielder on a sacrifice fly to right. Catcher Wilin Rosario drove in a pair of runs, including one on a solo blast in the fourth, his ninth homer of the year.

The performance of the 24-year old Friedrich was the biggest story for the Rockies. Friedrich went seven innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out four. He moved to 4-1 on the season with the victory.

Rockies Roster 2012: Jeff Francis Could Return To Colorado

The Cincinnati Reds recently released long-time Colorado Rockies pitcher Jeff Francis, stirring rumors that the 31-year-old pitcher could return to the Rockies.

Francis pitched 77 and 1/3 innings with the Reds' Triple-A affiliate sporting a 3.72 ERA and 3.26 FIP. He played six seasons with the Colorado Rockies, hurling over 800 innings with the club. The left-handed Francis sports three pitches -- a fastball, curve and changeup -- and rarely goes above 88 mph on his fastball.

The southpaw could presumably replace another soft-tossing lefty, SP Jamie Moyer -- who was released earlier in the season. Moyer started 10 games for the Rockies, earning a 5.70 ERA and 5.45 FIP.
