On Sunday afternoon, the San Diego Padres defeated the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in a 2-0 decision -- which goes to show us that, well, the Rockies are bad. That's nothing we don't already know, however.
Colorado's Drew Pomeranz (0-3, 3.72 ERA) unfortunately got saddled with the loss in this game. He allowed one unearned run on two hits and three walks while pitching six innings. That unearned run scored after Chris Denorfia scored on a throwing error by Jordan Pacheco. Pacheco attempted a throw to first base on a Logan Forsythe-hit ball. Denorfia had reached on an infield single and stole second base.
Rex Brothers allowed the other run in the seventh inning when Denorfia struck for an RBI single, plating Alexi Amarista.
Kip Wells threw seven shutout innings for the Padres, limiting the Rockies to six hits during that time.
The Rockies (30-48, 18-25 home) begin a seven-game road trip on Monday when they visit the St. Louis Cardinals.

Drew Pomeranz will be on the mound on Sunday for the Colorado Rockies as they look to avoid a sweep at the hands of the San Diego Padres. To make room for him on the roster, Colorado demoted Guillermo Moscoso to Triple-A Colorado Springs, where Moscoso has spent most of the season.
Moscoso has appeared in 10 games for the Rockies this season, two of which were starts. In those appearances, Moscoso has amassed an 8.23 ERA and a 1.87 WHIP. In his most recent start on June 26 versus the Washington Nationals, Moscoso gave up eight earned runs in 1.2 innings.
Pomeranz, meanwhile, has been up with the Rockies for five starts in 2012, the last of which came on May 7 in San Diego. Pomeranz put up a 2.51 ERA and struck out 46 batters in 46.2 innings in Triple-A after being demoted on May 11, and with the Rockies far out of playoff contention, Pomeranz might be up in Denver for an extended period of time.

The Colorado Rockies were on the wrong end of history on Saturday night when San Diego Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal collected his first two career hits as home runs from each side of the plate. Those long balls helped the Padres pick up an 8-4 victory, denying the Rockies a chance at a three-game winning streak.
On Sunday, the Rockies turn to Drew Pomeranz (0-2, 4.70 ERA), recently recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Pomeranz made five starts for the Rockies over April and May but struggled with consistency. His last start lasted just three innings after he was hit in the right quad. Several days later he found himself back in the minors to work on things. Down in the Springs, Pomeranz has gone 4-4 with a 2.51 ERA, averaging nearly nine strikeouts per nine innings.
Kip Wells (0-1, 3.60 ERA) makes just his second start of the year after joining the Padres on June 26. He allowed five runs (two earned) against the Houston Astros in that game. Rockies fans will remember Kip Wells as the team's Opening Day starter in 2008.
This game will be played at 1:10 p.m. MT and can be seen on ROOT Sports or heard on 850 KOA.

The Colorado Rockies (30-47) could not overcome the first career start from C Yasmani Grandal (2 for 4, 2 HR) as he and SS Alexi Amarista (2 for 4, 2 HR) led the San Diego Padres (29-50) to an 8-4 win over the Rockies.
Christian Friedrich started for the Rockies and lasted 5.0 inning while allowing only 1 run on a home run from Grandal, striking out 5 Padres hitters in the process. The Rockies reciprocated in the 5th inning with a catcher home run of their own as C Wilin Rosario launched his 13th jack of the year, and the Rockies put up 2 runs in the inning for a 2-1 lead heading into the 6th.
From there, RP Jeremy Guthrie (BS, 1)(L, 3-7) entered the game and could not keep the ball in the park. He promptly allowed three runs to the Padres on two homers -- including a second homer to Grandal. RP Adam Ottavino worked the top of the eighth, but allowed 4 ER of his own for an 8-2 Padres lead.
And though the Rockies posted a 2-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning, they could not finished the comeback and fell both into the loss column 8-4 and into the history books:
Yasmani Grandal is first player in @MLBhistory whose first 2 career hits were homers from diff sides of plate in same game #ELIAS

The San Diego Padres called up catcher Yasmani Grandal to replace the struggling Nick Hundley on the roster and he's batting fifth for the team on Saturday night. Grandal was up with the team earlier in June, but he went hitless in one at-bat.
For Triple-A Tucson, Grandal has hit .335/.443/.521 with 18 doubles and six home runs in 56 games. He should get an extended look in the majors this time around. There's perhaps no better place than Coors Field for him to start out at this time around.
Here are the lineups for the game:
| 1. Chris Denorfia (R) RF | 1. Dexter Fowler (S) CF |
| 2. Logan Forsythe (R) 2B | 2. Marco Scutaro (R) SS |
| 3. Chase Headley (S) 3B | 3. Carlos Gonzalez (L) LF |
| 4. Carlos Quentin (R) LF | 4. Michael Cuddyer (R) RF |
| 5. Yasmani Grandal (S) C | 5. Todd Helton (L) 1B |
| 6. Yonder Alonso (L) 1B | 6. Jordan Pacheco (R) 3B |
| 7. Cameron Maybin (R) CF | 7. Chris Nelson (R) 2B |

The Colorado Rockies have suffered through a difficult month of June, but they may have one of their top prospects usher them into July for a fresh start. Drew Pomeranz, former first-round pick (No. 5 overall) from the 2010 MLB Draft and key piece in the Ubaldo Jimenez trade, is likely to be promoted by the Rockies to start against the San Diego Padres on Sunday, according to Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post.
Pomeranz has posted an impressive 2.51 ERA and a 10.0 strikeouts per nine innings ratio over 46.2 innings pitched for Triple-A Colorado Springs in 2012. The 23-year-old hurler has appeared in five games for the Rockies this season, amassing two losses and a 4.70 ERA over 23.0 innings.

The Colorado Rockies opened this weekend series against the San Diego Padres with a 10-2 thrashing on Friday night. That win gave the Rockies consecutive victories -- having defeated the Washington Nationals on Thursday -- for the first time since June 3-4. Should the Rockies win on Saturday, the team will have its longest winning streak since winning five in a row from May 28-June 1.
The Rockies send Christian Friedrich (4-5, 5.86 ERA) to the mound for this Saturday evening game. He is on a four-game losing streak ever since improving to 4-1 on June 4. In his last start, Friedrich went 4.1 innings (70 pitches) and allowed four runs on nine hits to the Washington Nationals. Friedrich's first career start came against the Padres (on the road). He struck out seven and allowed two runs in six innings.
Edinson Volquez (4-7, 3.82 ERA) is coming off one of his best starts of the season, having defeated the Seattle Mariners in 2-0 decision. He threw 6.2 shutout innings while striking out four and walking three. Volquez picked up his first win of the season back on May 7 when he allowed two runs in 5.2 innings to the Rockies in a 3-2 contest.
This game will start at 5:15 p.m. MT and can be seen on FOX. Tune into 850 KOA if you'd rather that broadcast.

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Jason Marquis is more than familiar with Denver's thin air, and he held the Colorado Rockies more or less in check through five innings on Friday night. But in the bottom of the sixth inning, Colorado blew the game open with four runs, and they never looked back from there.
Colorado was up 2-0 on Marquis and the Padres heading into the sixth, with those runs coming modestly on a Carlos Gonzalez groundout and a Marco Scutaro single. But in the sixth, the Rockies found their power, as Gonzalez connected for a two run triple, which was followed by an RBI triple by right fielder Tyler Colvin. In the eighth inning, with the team up 6-2, Michael Cuddyer and Wilin Rosario both blasted two run homers to left.
But the story of the game was arguably Rockies starter Jeff Francis, who held the anemic Padres offense scoreless through six innings while only relinquishing three hits.
The two teams will be back on the field on Saturday night at 5:15 MT.

Colorado Rockies starter Jeff Francis is threatening to test the team's 75-pitch limit for it's starting pitchers. Francis is in the process of throwing a gem on Friday night vs. the San Diego Padres, having allowed no runs and two hits through five innings. He's spend 65 pitches doing so, and manager Jim Tracy will likely have to decide between his new philosophy and results on the field.
The Rockies lead 2-0 thanks to a Carlos Gonzalez groundout that scored Marco Scutaro and a Scutaro single that scored Wilin Rosario. Padres starter Jason Marquis, in a return to Coors Field, has been almost as good as Francis so far through five, allowing only three hits, but also the two runs. Marquis has also struck out six batters.

The Colorado Rockies have announced via press release that SP Tyler Chatwood has been recalled and SP Edwar Cabrera has been optioned back to Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Chatwood appeared in four games with the club so far in the 2012 MLB season, and the 22-year-old sports a 5.63 ERA despite a solid 3.31 FIP. In nine minor league starts for Chatwood, he showed a similar divergence in numbers, posting a 5.79 ERA with a 3.92 FIP.
Cabrera, meanwhile, pitched in only one game with the Rockies, a 2 and 1/3 inning start in which the 23-year-old allowed five earned runs (seven runs total) while walking three, allowing three home runs and striking out only one. He departs with a 19.29 ERA and 22.77 FIP.
