A five-game homestand for the Colorado Rockies ended in embarrassing fashion, as they were swept by the Seattle Mariners following a 6-4 loss in the series-finale. The Rockies lost four of their five games at Coors Field and now hit the road for six straight.
Jeremy Guthrie didn't have his best stuff in the loss, allowing six earned runs in six innings. Guthrie gave up seven hits, including three home runs, and saw his record fall to 2-2 on the season. Carlos Gonzalez provided most of the offensive support in the loss, recording three hits and driving in two runs. Gonzalez also hit his eighth home run of the season.
Blake Beavan pitched well in the win, striking out seven batters in five innings. Jesus Montero and Justin Smoak each drove in two runs to help the Mariners earn the sweep.

Heading into the finale of their series against the Seattle Mariners, the Colorado Rockies knew they would have to step up their performance in order to avoid being swept at home. Unfortunately, through the first six innings, the Rockies have continued to struggle, as they trail 6-2 heading into the 7th inning.
Jeremy Guthrie had issues on the mound for the Rockies, as he allowed six earned runs in six innings. Guthrie gave up three home runs, including two in a three-run third inning for the Mariners. At the plate, Carlos Gonzalez has been impressive, hitting his eighth home run of the season in the first inning. Gonzalez also has a double.
Seattle received a strong outing from Blake Beavan, who allowed just two earned runs in five innings. Both Jesus Montero and Justin Smoak have driven in two runs to help push Seattle into the lead.

After losing the first two games of the series, the Colorado Rockies are hoping to avoid a sweep at home against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday afternoon. The first interleague series of 2012 hasn't gone well for Colorado, which has been outscored 14-3 so far in the series.
With Jeremy Guthrie making his second start since coming off the disabled list earlier this month, the Rockies do at least have one of their better pitchers taking the mound. On May 15, Guthrie lasted 5.1 innings against the San Francisco Giants, allowing one unearned run on four hits and four walks.
Eric Young Jr. is getting the start in center field as Dexter Fowler gets a day off.

The Colorado Rockies appear to have hit rock bottom this weekend against the Seattle Mariners, losing 4-0 in a two-hitter on Friday and then 10-3 on Saturday. Sunday offers new hope, just as every new day in baseball does.
The Rockies will have Jeremy Guthrie (2-1, 4.85 ERA) make his second start since coming off the disabled list. Though he took a no-decision in the contest, the Rockies wound up winning, 5-4, on May 15. He allowed one (unearned) run in 5.1 innings while walking four and striking out four.
Opposing Guthrie will be Blake Beavan (1-4, 4.58 ERA). He has thrown just seven innings over his last two starts, largely a result of an elbow injury. On May 7, he pitched just three innings because a comebacker hit him in his right elbow. Then pitching on seven days' rest, he made it through four innings after allowing three runs. This will be his first start at Coors Field.

For the second consecutive game, the Colorado Rockies delivered a listless performance in front of their home crowd. After getting shutout 5-0 in the opening game of their series against the Seattle Mariners, the Rockies again failed to deliver offensively and fell 10-3.
In the first home start of his career, Christian Friedrich really struggled. Friedrich allowed nine hits and eight earned runs in just five innings. Friedrich also had issues with his control, as he walked four batters. At the plate, the Rockies struggled, scoring only three runs on five hits. Wilin Rosario drove in two runs on a home run in the sixth inning.
Jason Vargas was impressive on the mound for Seattle, pitching seven solid innings and improving his record to 5-3. Kyle Seager had three hits and drove in three runs in the win.

The offensive struggles for the Colorado Rockies have continued in the second game of their series against the Seattle Mariners, as the Rockies trail 5-0 through five innings. This lack of production comes on the heels of a poor performance on Friday, when Kevin Millwood limited the Rockies to two hits and zero runs.
Christian Friedrich has struggled in the first home start of his career, allowing nine hits and five earned runs in five innings. However, he has received no support from his offense, with the Rockies being limited to just one hit so far.
Kyle Seager has led the Mariners offense through the first five innings. Seager has driven in three runs on three hits, including a two-run homer in the 5th inning. Jesus Montero and Jason Vargas have also driven in runs.

The Colorado Rockies are about to play Game 2 against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday afternoon, but will the team's offense wake up. It slumbered on Friday night against Kevin Millwood, who threw a complete game, two-hit shutout in the 4-0 victory.
Catcher Wilin Rosario is starting back-to-back games for just the second time this season and for the first time since the middle of April.

The return of Jorge De La Rosa to a shaky starting rotation is something the Colorado Rockies have been hoping for since his injury last season. However, after experiencing some stiffness in his forearm during a rehab start last week, these are certainly some nervous times for the organization. These worries only intensified today, as Thomas Harding of MLB.com revealed that De La Rosa has been recalled because of the forearm pain and will have a new rehab window:
@harding_at_mlb:
#Rockies have recalled LHP Jorge De La Rosa from rehab assignment because of left forearm tightness.@harding_at_mlb: After 7 days,
#Rockies LHP Jorge De La Rosa will be placed back on the DL for firearm tightness and will get a new 30-day injury rehab window@harding_at_mlb: Explanation:
#Rockies De La Rosa was not going to be ready when his rehab window for elbow surgery was set to 5/27, to return to Majors 6/2
De La Rosa began the 2011 season in strong fashion, jumping out to a 5-2 start. However, he was forced to undergo Tommy John surgery following an injury to his elbow. De La Rosa has been rehabbing with the hopes of returning to the Rockies rotation by this Summer.

Colorado Rockies pitcher Christian Friedrich has turned in two strong starts to mark his major league career, but both those times came on the road. On Saturday, Friedrich (1-0, 1.38 ERA) will make a home start at Coors Field against the Seattle Mariners. Even if Friedrich can pitch similar to either start (6IP/7K and 7IP/10K), the Rockies' bats desperately need to show up.
The Rockies' offense went absent on Friday night when Kevin Millwood pitched a two-hitter against his 2011 team. It took until the sixth inning and two outs on the board for the Rockies to get rid of that zero in the hit column. It was the second complete game shutout of the season against the Rockies, previously happening on Opening Day at Coors Field (Barry Zito's threw the complete game shutout that day).
Jason Vargas (4-3, 3.28 ERA) opposes Friedrich on the mound. In all nine of his starts, Vargas has pitched into the sixth inning, but his last start has been his worst of the season. He allowed five runs over six innings, including two home runs allowed. He only received one run of offensive support in the 6-1 loss.

At least the Colorado Rockies avoided the no-hitter. Unfortunately, the Rockies failed to do much else than that in a 4-0 loss to the Seattle Mariners. Kevin Millwood (2-4, 4.17 ERA) had a no-hitter against his 2011 team through 5.2 innings before Marco Scutaro wound up with an infield single, breaking up the event. Had Jordan Pacheco not singled up the middle during the next at-bat, Scutaro's hit might have been an error given the difficulty of the play and the bobble the fielder made on the play.
Oh, and Scutaro wound up trying to go from first to third on the play and was thrown out, ending the inning. And that was all the offense the Rockies mustered against Millwood, who finished his outing for a complete game, two-hit shutout.
Alex White (0-3, 5.09 ERA) pitched well over seven innings despite allowing three runs. Kyle Seager drove in two of the runs on a single and a sac fly (the latter a close play at the plate). Mike Carp drove in the other run on a home run. Outside of that, White struck out seven and walked zero batters.
John Jaso drove in the fourth Mariners run on a sacrifice fly against Matt Reynolds in the ninth inning.
The Rockies (15-23, 9-12 home) will have Christian Friedrich on the mound during Saturday's game at 2:10 p.m. MT.

Detroit Tigers starter Justin Verlander was two outs from a no-hitter tonight vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates; Seattle Mariners starter Kevin Millwood is quite a bit a way from that point, but he is clean through five innings tonight vs. the Colorado Rockies. Through five, along with not giving up a hit, Millwood has struck out five batters and walked one.
The Seattle Mariners put up a run in the first inning on a Kyle Seager single, and they added to that in the second inning when leftfielder Mike Carp took Alex White deep to centerfield. That put the Mariners up 2-0 heading into the bottom of the second, and that score has held as the third inning has gotten underway.
White have up three hits and two earned runs in those first two innings— he did not walk anyone, but only struck out one batter. The Rockies hitting has yet to show up tonight, as one-time Rockie Kevin Millwood has yet to give up a hit through two innings. In his four starts at home as a Rockie last year, Millwood had a 6.95 ERA.

After losing his first two outings of the year, Rockies starter Alex White goes for his first win in 2012 against the Mariners.

Millwood has been mediocre at best this year for the Mariners, putting up a 4.53 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP, though both numbers have been aided greatly by Seattle's spacious Safeco Field. In four starts in Coors Field last season, Millwood put up an ERA up near 7.
In tonight's game, the Mariners have gotten out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a Kyle Seager single and a Mike Carp home run.
