Rockies Vs. Astros Recap: Rockies Secure Opening Night Victory, 5-3

So far, so good for the Colorado Rockies second biggest offseason acquisition. Starter Jeremy Guthrie, who was acquired this winter in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles, stymied the Houston Astros on opening night on Friday night, allowing three earned runs on four hits over seven innings. Guthrie did give up back-to-back homers to Carlos Lee and Brian Bogusevic in the fourth inning, but he was able to do enough to garner his first win in a Rockies uniform.

The Rockies took a 4-3 lead that they would not relinquish in the eighth inning when Eric Young Jr., after getting held up in between second and third base on a ball in the dirt, raced home after Astros shortstop Marwin Gonzalez let a throw from catcher Jason Castro squirt into centerfield. Reliever Rex Brothers shut the Astros out in the eighth and Troy Tulowitzki hit a homer in the ninth before new closer Rafael Betancourt shut the door in the ninth.

The Rockies and Astros will take the field again tomorrow night at 5:05 p.m. MT, as Jamie Moyer takes on Lucas Harrell.
