Due to inclement weather on Monday, the Colorado Rockies and the Pittsburgh Pirates are playing a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon -- a sight rarely seen these days (though the Rockies and the Houston Astros do have a scheduled doubleheader later in the season).
Game 1 commences at 10:35 a.m. MT for a contest between the Rockies' Juan Nicasio (1-0, 6.19 ERA) and the Pirates' James McDonald (0-1, 3.45 ERA). Nicasio is coming off his first victory of the season, aided by a five-run second inning against the San Diego Padres. He allowed four runs over 6.1 innings, surrendering two home runs and striking out five. This will be his first start on the road since he allowed one run in seven innings to the Houston Astros to start the season. In between those two starts he allowed six runs in 2.2 innings during his home debut.
McDonald pitched just four innings in his last outing, but that was a result of being removed for a pinch hitter while a man was on third base. The team was down, 1-0, to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The move didn't work out and the Pirates went on to lose the game, 2-1. His worst start was his second one, allowing three runs in 5.2 innings. The team lost that game, 5-0.
Game 2 will commence 30 minutes after the conclusion of the opener. Jhoulys Chacin (0-1, 4.80 ERA) and Charlie Morton (0-1, 3.60 ERA) will oppose one another. Chacin allowed three runs over seven innings in his last start, striking out six, but he took the no-decision. Michael Cuddyer pin hit and drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth for the victory over the Milwaukee Brewers that night. Morton (0-1, 3.60 ERA) also pitched well in his last start (5 IP, 2/1 R/ER, 6 K), but he had little offense behind him and lost, 4-1, to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Both games can be seen on ROOT Sports and heard on 850 KOA.
