The Colorado Rockies were unable to complete a sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday afternoon, losing by a three-run margin, 5-2. Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill, in his first season with the team, had no problems with a Rockies' lineup that consisted of five bench players starting the game. Cahill allowed one run (scored after he left the game) on four hits in 7.1 innings. He struck out six.
Jonathan Herrera started the game at second base in place of Marco Scutaro and was the one Rockies hitter able to consistently hit Arizona pitching. He went 3-for-4 and scored one run. He had half of the team's six hits, all of which went for singles.
Arizona's Chris Young drove in the first three runs for the Diamondbacks, two on a first-inning home run and one on a single in the third. Aaron Hill drove in two on a single in the fifth and also had an amazing catch during the bottom half of the inning. He turned an apparent bloop single by Chris Nelson into an over-the-shoulder catch and then was able to take advantage of Wilin Rosario's baserunning mistake to double him off first base.
Drew Pomeranz, making his first start of the season, faltered badly. He used 100 pitches through 4.1 innings and allowed all five runs on nine hits and two walks. Josh Roenicke, Matt Reynolds and Rafael Betancourt held the Snakes to one hit and one walk over the remaining 4.2 innings. Roenicke struck out five while allowing the two baserunners.
The Rockies (4-5, 3-3 home) remain at Coors Field for a series against the San Diego Padres that begins on Monday.

The Colorado Rockies are trailing 3-0 to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fourth inning of Sunday afternoon's game as D-Backs starter Trevor Cahill has been superb thus far. The Rockies have mustered just two hits and a walk, failing to get a baserunner past first base in the first three frames.
Rockies starter Drew Pomeranz, called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs to appear in this game, has had mixed results in his 2012 debut. Over four innings, he's struck out two batters while giving up three runs on six hits and a walk. Cahill has struck out four in his three shutout innings of work.
Arizona initially took the lead in the first inning on a two-run homer from center fielder Chris Young. He's had an impressive game so far, going 2-for-2 with a single, a stolen base and the aforementioned home run. Wilin Rosario and Jonathan Herrera have provided Colorado's only hits.

On Jackie Robinson Day, the Colorado Rockies (4-4) can sweep the Arizona Diamondbacks (5-3). The Rockies have won the last two games on the bat of Todd Helton: an RBI double for a 7-6 victory on Friday and a two-run walkoff home run for an 8-7 win on Saturday night. In the former game, Helton had also driven in the previous two runs on a single in the fourth.
However, because it is Sunday, Todd Helton is likely to be on the bench for the series finale. This will likely be what happens throughout the season, as the 38-year-old first baseman does need his rest. Jason Giambi could draw the start, an occurrence that took place last Sunday.
Making his season debut, on the other hand, will be Drew Pomeranz, the main piece acquired in the Ubaldo Jimenez trade. Pomeranz started the year in the minors because the off day on Tuesday allowed the Rockies to go without a fifth starter the first time through the rotation. The 23-year-old lefty pitched one game for the Double-A Tulsa Drillers, allowing zero runs in four innings while striking out four.
Trevor Cahill, acquired during the offseason in a deal that sent Jarrod Parker to the Oakland Athletics, will make his second start of the season in opposition to Pomeranz. The 24-year-old righty threw 104 pitches in six innings against San Diego on Tuesday, walking six and striking out five. However, he allowed just one run on two hits.

It was a cold, rainy night at Coors Field. The Colorado Rockies were down in the bottom of the ninth, 7-6, with two outs. Todd Helton stepped to the plate with Marco Scutaro on first base. Unlike Casey at the Bat, Helton hit a towering shot to right field, a soaring missile that stayed on the correct side of the foul pole for a two-run walkoff home run (video) and the 8-7 victory. This was just Helton's seventh career walkoff home run.
The Rockies improved to 4-4 with the win and captured their first series victory of the 2012 season. Todd Helton drove in the go-ahead run against the Diamondbacks on Friday night.
Arizona outplayed the Rockies after the one-hour, 11-minute rain delay by scoring six runs, three on a Miguel Montero home run in the fifth and the others one at a time over the next three innings. The rain conditions contributed greatly to that, as evidenced by Troy Tulowitzki's two errors, but the Diamondbacks experienced some of that when Eric Young Jr. doubled in Tyler Colvin to make it a 7-6 game in the eighth inning.
Colvin was one of the stars during the first half of the game for his two-run home run in the second inning, which was immediately followed by Ramon Hernandez's home run.
Jhoulys Chacin started and pitched the first four innings, but didn't return as a result of the delay. He worked out of a bases-loaded situation in the third inning by not allowing any runner to score, getting Chris Young to fly out to end the inning. The one run Chacin did allow was an RBI single to Chris Young in the first inning.
The Rockies go for the sweep at 1:10 p.m. MT with Drew Pomeranz on the mound.

The Denver skies have paused the game action at Coors Field as a rain delay has sent both teams to the clubhouse. When play resumes, the Colorado Rockies will enter the top of the 5th inning with a 5-1 lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
UPDATE: The game is expected to resume around 9:05 p.m. MT.
After jumping to a 3-1 lead in the second inning, the Rockies found a way to eke out two more runs in a rainy Denver night. Colorado grabbed a run in the bottom of the third after walks from CF Dexter Fowler and 1B Todd Helton led to an RBI single from RF Michael Cuddyer.
In the fourth inning, 3B Jordan Pacheco tripled on a fly ball to center field and came home on a ground out from P Jhoulys Chacin to give Colorado a 5-1 lead. But by the finish of the fourth inning, the rains had begun to pour in earnest, forcing the officials to delay the game.

The Colorado Rockies have taken an early 3-1 lead against the Arizona Diamondbacks with homers from LF Tyler Colvin and C Ramon Hernandez.
Pitching for the Diamonbacks, SP Josh Collmenter began the bottom of the second inning by inducing a ground out from 1B Todd Helton, but RF Michael Cuddyer singled and then Colvin redirected a 1-1 pitch to the right field bullpen for a two-run home run and a 2-1 Rockies lead.
Ramon Hernandez then worked a 2-1 count from Collmenter before blasting his second homer of the season just beyond the center field wall. In the meantime, SP Jhoulys Chacin managed to work around a bases-loaded jam in the top of the third to keep the Diamondbacks at bay.
The Rockies enter the bottom of the third with a 3-1 lead.

The Colorado Rockies have failed to win back-to-back games this season, but they improved to 3-4 on Friday night following a 7-6 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Having alternated wins and losses since Wednesday, the Rockies once again have a shot at putting together a winning streak.
Jhoulys Chacin returns to the mound at Coors Field for the first time since he threw the home-opening loss to the San Francisco Giants on Monday, a 7-0 decision. He was pulled after 90 pitches while pitching in the fifth inning, recording zero outs and allowing three baserunners. His final line had him at four innings pitched with four runs allowed on four hits and five walks.
The Diamondbacks counter with Josh Collmenter, a pitcher with an over the top delivery. In 25 innings over the 2011 season, Collmenter held a 2.81 ERA and a 0.935 WHIP with a 2-1 record. Collmenter wasn't too sharp to start the season against the Giants. He allowed six runs on five hits and a walk in three innings. Buster Posey hit a two-run homer off him.

Prospects looked dim for the Colorado Rockies early in Friday night's game vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks, but no lead is ever safe in Coors Field, and the Rockies were able to pull off a 7-6 victory despite a disaster start from Juan Nicasio.
Nicasio gave up six earned runs in 2.2 innings thanks to five hits and five walks before getting pulled in favor of Esmil Rogers, but the Rockies didn't make life any easier for Diamondbacks starter Daniel Hudson, who gave up six earned runs and 10 hits in only 3.2 innings of work. The game was tied at six heading into the top of the fifth, but both teams' middle relievers were able to shut off the seemingly endless supply of runs.
At least until the bottom of the eighth, that is, when the Rockies scratched out what would be the game winning run. Carlos Gonzalez got things going with one out when he singled off reliever Brian Shaw, who would soon make a fatal mistake. With Gonzalez leading off first, Shaw attempted to pick off the Rockies centerfielder, but he whipped the ball past Arizona first basemen Paul Goldschmidt, allowing Gonzalez to advance to third.
Shaw would then strike out Troy Tulowitzki, but with two out, Todd Helton dropped a double right inside the left field line. Gonzalez scored, and the run was the third one batted in on the night by Helton, who was responsible for both Colorado's game tying and game winning runs.
The two teams will go at it again on Saturday at 6:10 p.m MT.

The Arizona Diamondbacks' 6-2 lead is no more. A Todd Helton single to right field in the bottom of the fourth brought the game to a 6-6 tie and also knocked Arizona starter Daniel Hudson out of the game.
The inning started off with Marco Scutaro singling to centerfield, but that was erased by a double play ball that Hudson induced from Dexter Fowler. But the Rockies would rally back thanks to back-to-back singles from Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez. The two would advance a base on a wild pitch and then would be brought home when Helton shot a ball into right.
Colorado's Esmil Rogers would be in line for the win if the Rockies can take the lead in the next few innings. He's pitched 2.1 shutout innings in relief of Juan Nicasio, who was pulled after 2.2 innings.

The Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks are throwing haymakers at each other early on Friday night, with the latest punch being landed by Colorado catcher Ramon Hernandez. The hitting in the bottom of the third got started for the Rockies by Troy Tulowitzki, who laced a double to left field. That was followed by a Michael Cuddyer walk, and both were brought home when Hernandez crushed a double to deep right field.
The hit brought the Rockies to within two runs of Arizona at 6-4. The two-run counter from Colorado came on the heels of a four run top of the third by the Diamondbacks, which knocked out Rockies starter Juan Nicasio. Nicasio was replaced by Esmil Rogers.

Tonight's series opening match up between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies got off to a mildly explosive start in the first two innings in Denver. The D-Backs started off the scoring by taking advantage of a wild Juan Nicasio issued three walks before Paul Goldschmidt knocked in Justin Upton and Miguel Montero with a single to centerfield.
But that 2-0 lead wouldn't last long, as Dexter Fowler took a Daniel Hudson pitch deep to right field to bring the Rockies to within one. After a Carlos Gonzalez ground out, Troy Tulowitzki and Todd Helton both singled, but a strikeout by Michael Cuddyer ended that rally.
After a quick 1-2-3 inning by Nicasio in the top of the second, Rockies catcher Ramon Hernandez blasted a homer to left field to tie the game at two. Hudson was solid against the Rockies last year, posting a 3.72 ERA in three starts, but the Rockies seem intent on starting his regression.

The Colorado Rockies are 2-4 this season and in the middle of a nine-game homestand. Will things pick up on Friday when the team hosts the Arizona Diamondbacks?
Juan Nicasio's first home start of the 2012 season was by no means comfortable, as the Arizona Diamondbacks took him for six runs in only 2.2 innings pitched on Friday night. What will sting the most for Nicasio is he had about as much to do with his own undoing than did the Snakes, whose five hits were equalled by the five walks issued by Nicasio.
After giving up two runs in the first inning and blanking Arizona in the second, Nicasio lost all control in the third. After Jason Kubel struck out swinging, Justin Upton reached on a bunt single, which was followed by a Miguel Montero homer to right that made it 4-2 Diamondbacks. Nicasio then walked Chris Young, who advanced to third on a single from Paul Goldschmidt. That was followed by a Geoff Blum sacrifice fly to score Young and a Ryan Roberts double to right to score Blum and make it 6-2 Arizona.
And that would be all for Nicasio, who was relieved by Esmil Rogers, who induced a ground out from Willie Bloomquist to end the inning.
