Giants Vs. Rockies: San Francisco Hits Six HRs In 12-5 Victory

With the way the 2011 season has gone for the Colorado Rockies, Sunday's loss to the San Francisco Giants should come as no surprise. The Giants hit six home runs in the 12-5 victory over the Rockies.

Esmil Rogers (6-6, 6.64 ERA) was the main culprit for the home runs. He allowed a two-run shot to Mike Fontenot in the first inning, continuing his poor first-inning habits. He left after 3-2/3 innings, but he allowed three more home runs in that final frame. Pablo Sandoval and Brandon Belt each hit solo homers in the fourth inning and pitcher Matt Cain hit a two-run home run. Rogers allowed nine runs in total. Greg Reynolds allowed a three-run home run in relief of Rogers, two of the runners being charged to Rogers.

The Rockies spread out five runs over the game, two runs in the fourth scoring on an error and a fielder's choice and two more in the fifth on a Ty Wigginton double and a Chris Iannetta single. Matt Cain improved to 12-10 with a 2.86 ERA.

The Rockies (70-82, 38-40 home) will pick things up from this losing sweep with a home series against the Padres.

Giants Vs. Rockies Preview: Esmil Rogers Looks For Something To Give

The Colorado Rockies have one last home game against the San Francisco Giants and they surely could use a win right now. Shoddy defense in the first game and rookie struggles in the second led to two miserable losses. The third was comeback that wasn't meant to be.

Matt Cain (11-10, 2.79 ERA) leads the Giants on the mound Sunday afternoon. He will make his fourth start against the Rockies this season and his second at Coors Field. In that start, Cain allowed six runs in 4-2/3 innings, a game the Rockies ultimately won, 10-2. He is coming of a no-decision to the San Diego Padres, having allowed one run in 6-1/3 innings. The Giants lost the game, 3-2. That was his shortest outing since he threw six innings back on Aug. 12.

Esmil Rogers (6-5, 5.88 ERA) has not won since Aug. 9 and the Rockies are 1-5 in his six starts since then. Before his last start on Sept. 13, Rogers had allowed four runs in four straight games and six in the next-to-last one. He pitched leaps and bounds better in his last start, allowing just a Prince Fielder solo home run in six innings. Unfortunately, the Rockies managed just one run off of Zack Greinke and lost on a walkoff home run by Ryan Braun in the 11th inning.

First pitch is set for 1:10 p.m. MT.

Giants Vs. Rockies Final Score: Colorado's Late Rally Falls Short, Giants Win, 6-5

The Colorado Rockies have dropped three straight to the San Francisco on this portion of the final homestand of the season. They lost on Saturday night, 6-5, falling short of a late rally in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Prized prospect Drew Pomeranz (1-0, 1.69 ERA) allowed just two runs in 5-2/3 innings. The first run scored when opposing pitcher Eric Surkamp hit an RBI single in the second inning. The other one scored after he left the game and Matt Belisle was on the mound. Pomeranz got the first two outs of the sixth inning without any trouble, but he was pulled after walking Mark DeRosa. Belisle came in and allowed an RBI triple, putting the Giants ahead, 2-1.

Jordan Pacheco had tied the game at one in the fifth inning, but in the sixth inning he saw Dexter Fowler single in two runs to put the Rockies back in the lead, 3-2. The lead was short-lived as Huston Street blew the game in the eighth inning. He saw Carlos Beltran single in a run and then Brett Pill tripled in two runs. Aubrey Huff grounded out with Matt Lindstrom in relief, but put another run across the plate for the 6-3 lead.

The Rockies faltered in their ninth inning comeback. Santiago Casilla got Pacheco to hit into a ground out to start things. Seth Smith and Ty Wigginton reached base on a single and a walk before Mark Ellis hit an RBI double and Wilin Rosario had a run-scoring ground out. Rookie Hector Gomez, who went 2-for-4, struck out swinging to end the game.

The Rockies (70-81, 38-39 home) finish this series on Sunday at 1:10 p.m. MT. Esmil Rogers and Matt Cain are scheduled to start.

Giants Vs. Rockies Preview: Drew Pomeranz Makes His 2nd Start For Colorado

While Alex White is having a rough start to his career as a Colorado Rockies (he took the loss on Friday night), the other pitcher the team received in the Ubaldo Jimenez trade was as advertised in his major league debut last Sunday. Drew Pomeranz (1-0, 0.00 ERA) was held to a pitch count and finished his first start after five innings. But those five innings saw Pomeranz scatter two hits and two walks. And he had the Rockies offense behind him, putting two on the board before he left the game.

The Giants are starting a 24-year-old rookie in Eric Surkamp (2-0, 3.24 ERA). This will be just his fourth start. Arguably, his first start, which was a no-decision, was his best. He allowed one run in six innings, but the Astros pulled out the 2-1 victory. In his last two starts, he's allowed three runs each time and seen his strikeouts fall from four to two to zero. In those two wins, the Giants offense provided six and eight runs of support.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. MT.

Giants Vs. Rockies Final Score: Long Ball Hurts Colorado's Alex White In 9-1 Loss

It wasn't five home runs this time, but Colorado Rockies pitcher Alex White fell victim once again the long ball. In the 9-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants, White allowed home runs in back-to-back innings. Brandon Belt sent one over the right center wall in the fourth inning for a two-run shot and Cody Ross sent one out of right field for the 3-0 lead.

White (2-2, 8.46 ERA) ran into more trouble in the sixth inning when pitcher Madison Bumgarner doubled in two runs in the sixth. Cody Ross struck again with a single to score Bumgarner. White allowed six runs in 5-2/3 innings before he was relieved. Aaron Cook pitched the seventh inning and allowed three more runs, two on a home run by Chris Stewart.

The Rockies scored their only run in the fifth inning. Wilin Rosario and Thomas Field started the inning with a walk and a single. Alex White singled them over, which was followed by an Eric Young Jr. out. Dexter Fowler then reached on an error by Pablo Sandoval, allowing Rosario to score. Madison Bumgarner allowed that one run on six hits in seven innings, picking up his 12th win.

The Rockies (70-80, 38-38 home) have Drew Pomeranz on the mound Saturday night.

Giants Vs. Rockies: Youngsters Alex White, Madison Bumgarner Duel On Friday Night

Sloppy defense and a cycle by Pablo Sandoval helped the San Francisco Giants to an 8-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday night. The Rockies have three games remaining in this series and then three more on the road.

On Friday night, Madison Bumgarner (11-12, 3.33 ERA) will look to continue a string of good starts that has lasted for his last four outings. He's pitched 27-2/3 innings over that span and has allowed four runs. He struck out 32 batters, including games of 11 and 13. This will be his first start in 2011 at Coors Field, but he did go 0-1 in two starts at San Francisco. He took a no-decision in his first start, allowing two runs in six innings. In his second, he allowed two runs in seven innings and took the loss in the Rockies' 2-1 victory.

Alex White (2-1, 8.18 ERA) has looked unimpressive in most of his starts with the Rockies. Despite winning in his last two starts, the offense has helped him to those victories. And he did allow five home runs in his last start. Hopefully this is just a rookie hiccup and nothing more.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. MT.

Giants Vs. Rockies Final Score: Pablo Sandoval Hits For Cycle In 8-5 Victory Over Colorado

The San Francisco Giants' Pablo Sandoval hit for the cycle in the 8-5 win over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday evening. Rockies pitcher Jhoulys Chacin (11-12, 3.73 ERA) just didn't have it in the game, just as he hasn't been all that effective the last several weeks. He allowed all four Sandoval hits over the first six innings.

Chacin took the hook for all seven runs scored by the Giants. He allowed a two-run home run to Pablo Sandoval in the first inning and then had three more runs tacked on in the second inning. Poor defense from shortstop Tommy Field and first baseman Jordan Pacheco helped on the latter three runs. Cody Ross and Carlos Beltran added an RBI single and an RBI double play in the sixth inning. Chacin left that inning right after allowing Sandoval's triple to complete the cycle.

In the fourth inning Jordan Pacheco hit his second home run of the season, but it was the seventh inning when the Rockies attempted to make their comeback. Chris Iannetta hit his 13th home run of the season and Chris Nelson and Eric Young Jr. each hit RBI doubles. But that was it. The Giants' Brandon Belt hit a home run off Matt Reynolds to make it a three-run game.

The Giants' Ryan Vogelsong (11-7, 2.68 ERA) allowed two runs in 5-1/3 innings and struck out eight batters.

The Rockies (70-79, 38-37) continue this series on Friday with Alex White and Madison Bumgarner facing each other.

Giants' Pablo Sandoval Hits For Cycle Against Colorado Rockies

The San Francisco Giants Pablo Sandoval has hit for the cycle in Thursday's game against the Colorado Rockies--and he needed just six innings to do it. He hit a two-run home run in the first inning, singled in the second inning, doubled to lead off the fifth inning and then tripled to right field in the sixth inning.

According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, this was the 10th cycle in Coors Field history and the first by a Giants hitter since 2007 when Fred Lewis did it at Coors Field. This is the 26th cycle hit by a Giants batter and the first of Sandoval's career.

The Giants control this game, 7-2, but poor defense by Thomas Field and Jordan Pacheco have hurt the Rockies, in particular. Carlos Gonzalez took an awkward hit into the wall on Sandoval's triple, but he remained in the game for the rest of the inning.
