Rockies Vs. Diamondbacks Final Score: Colorado Loses In Extra Innings, 3-2

In what was a close 2-0 game in the bottom of the ninth for the Colorado Rockies, their closer, Huston Street gave up two solo homers (Gerardo Parra, Chris Young) to tie the game and blow his first save of the season. When all was said and done, a bloop single to right field by Justin Upton in the bottom of the 11th scored the winning run (Chris Young blistered a ball to center for a double) to end the game, 3-2.

While it would be easy to place the blame for this loss on Huston Street, he was bound to blow a save at some point. And let's not forget that the Rockies were 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. In the first inning, Dexter Fowler and Jonathan Herrera had back-to-back singles, advanced to second and third on a Carlos Gonzalez ground out and then Fowler was out at home on a fielder's choice hit into by Troy Tulowitzki. Todd Helton popped out to end the inning.

In the top of the second inning, Seth Smith led off with a double and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Ian Stewart walked, placing runners on first and third. Jose Morales came up for the next at-bat and drove in Smith om a sacrifice fly. However, Ian Stewart was tagged out on second on the play. Hamel then struck out to end the inning.

The Rockies struck again in the fourth inning. Todd Helton hit his 535th career double (moving ahead of Lou Gehrig for 31st all-time), to start the inning and then scored on a Jose Morales single to center. Kennedy left after the sixth inning, having allowed just two runs in six innings.

Hammel shut out the Diamondbacks for seven innings, allowed four hits, walked three and struck out four. He ran into trouble in the first and sixth innings. In the former, Ian Stewart committed a throwing error to allow leadoff batter Chris Young to reach first. Young then stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. He then walked two batters to load the bases, but Melvin Mora ground out to end the inning. In the sixth inning, Melvin Mora singled and then reached third, but Gerardo Parra struck out to end the inning.

Rafael Betancourt came out for the eighth and struck out two in the eighth. However, twice Betancourt had his foot on the mound and went to his mouth. The umpire followed the rules and called two balls.

The Rockies (18-11) head to San Francisco for a three-game set with the Giants, starting Friday. First game is scheduled to begin at 8:15 p.m. MT. Ubaldo Jimenez and Matt Cain will duel.

Rockies Vs. Diamondbacks: Jason Hammel Pitches For 4th Win

The Colorado Rockies have a chance to take this road series with the Arizona Diamondbacks after defeating them on Wednesday night, 6-4. Todd Helton and Chris Iannetta played key roles with run-scoring doubles and home runs, while Jhoulys Chacin kept the D'Backs to two runs in seven innings.

The Rockies will put Jason Hammel on the mound, winner of two straight. Both wins were the only ones to come in series with the Marlins and Pirates. After pitching just five innings in his season debut, Hammel has managed at least six innings in his last four starts and reached seven against the Pirates. His 3.23 ERA is third-best among starters on the team.

Ian Kennedy was moved up a day in the rotation for the Diamondbacks. Kennedy started Opening Day against the Rockies, allowing four runs in six innings. Kennedy is coming off two good starts. He threw a complete game shutout against Philadelphia Phillies two starts ago, striking out 10, and then held the Cubs to three runs over 7.2 innings (but J.J. Putz gave up two runs in the ninth to lose, 5-3).

The Rockies hold a four-game lead over the San Francisco Giants for the NL West lead.

First pitch is scheduled once again for 7:40 p.m. MT. Tune in to ROOT Sports to see the Rockies.

Rockies Vs. Diamondacks Final Score: Chris Iannetta, Colorado Bounce Back In 6-4 Victory

The Colorado Rockies (18-10) overcame an early home run by the Arizona Diamondbacks' starting pitcher, Barry Enright, and a ninth-inning rally to win, 6-4, on Wednesday night. Both Enright and the Rockies' Jhoulys Chacin took gave up their first hits of the game to each other. Enright saw Chacin reach on a single to center in the top of the third inning, while Chacin gave up the home run in the bottom of the same frame for the 1-0 lead (Chacin reached third on a Dexter Fowler double, but never came around to score).

But the fourth inning turned the game in a new direction. Todd Helton walked in between outs by Troy Tulowitzki and Seth Smith. But with two outs, the Rockies didn't give up. Ian Stewart hit a ball that kept carrying to the corner in right field and Justin Upton was unable to make a catch on the ball, allowing Helton to score and Stewart to reach second. Chris Iannetta then lined a shot to left field for a two-run homer, his fourth of the season.

The Rockies then came back out for more in the top of the fifth inning. Enright walked Jonathan Herrera and Carlos Gonzalez, but had two outs after Dexter Fowler led off with a pop out and Tulowitzki flied out after the walks. Todd Helton came to the plate and lifted the ball to center field well beyond the reach of Chris Young for his 534th career double (tied for 31st with Lou Gehrig). Smith then plated Helton for the sixth run of the game.

Chacin (4-2) surrendered a second home, this time to Kelly Johnson in the sixth. But overall, Chacin turned in a good start. Despite the two homers and four walks, Chacin went seven innings and gave up just those two runs in three hits. He struck out six. Matt Reynolds allowed a home run to Juan Miranda in the bottom of the ninth, giving way to Huston Street. Street allowed an inherited runner to score, but got Kelly Johnson to strike out to end the game. Street picked up his 11th save.

Enright did what could have been expected from the start: he went five innings, walked six batters and allowed six hits and six runs. His bullpen held the Rockies to just three hits over the final four innings of the game.

On the defensive side of things, Chris Iannetta threw out his seventh batter of the season (21 attempts) when he gunned down Miranda in the fifth. Ian Stewart made a jumping catch at the hot corner on a line drive to record the first out of the bottom of the ninth.

The final game of this series will be played on Thursday at 7:40 p.m. MT. Jason Hammel and Ian Kennedy toe the rubber.

Rockies Vs. Diamondbacks: Colorado Hopes For Rebound With Jhoulys Chacin On Mound

The Colorado Rockies road success didn't find itself against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night. While both starters, Jorge De La Rosa and Joe Saunders, each gave up three runs, it came down to a game of bullpens after the sixth inning. An ill-timed pitch from Felipe Paulino in the bottom of the eighth and Justin Upton hit what proved to be the game-winning homer in a 4-3 victory.

The Rockies' Jhoulys Chacin has lost his last two starts, but in his last start his offense was unable to out a run on the board in a 3-0 loss to the Cubs. He struck out eight batters in seven innings. He's stranding runners at an 82 percent rate and inducing ground balls 60 percent of the time on balls in play. In two careers starts at Chase Field, Chacin has 18 strikeouts in 13.1 innings and a 2.03 ERA.

Opposing Chacin will be Barry Enright. Enright has a 5.76 ERA in five starts and has been hurt by walking 3.3 batters per nine innings and allowing 11.2 hits per nine innings. He's also served up six home runs in 29.2 innings.

Despite the loss on Tuesday, the Rockies (17-10) maintain a four-game lead over the Dodgers and the Giants, a 4.5-game lead over the D'Backs and a 6.5-game lead over the Padres.

First pitch is schedule for 7:40 p.m. MT. Tune into ROOT Sports for all the action.

Rockies Vs. Diamondbacks Score: Justin Upton Homer Sends Rockies To 4-3 Defeat

A trip to the desert has left the Colorado Rockies (17-10, 10-4 away) thirsty for victory, as they lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night, 4-3. Justin Upton's home run to right field to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning broke the 3-3 tie. Felipe Paulino gave up the homer and took the loss.

Both of the night's starters, Jorge De La Rosa and Joe Saunders, went six innings and allowed three runs each, but De La Rosa also had six strikeouts. The Rockies struck first when Ryan Spilborghs had sacrifice fly in the second inning, but it was a short-lived lead. In the third inning, De La Rosa allowed a leadoff, no-doubt home run to Henry Blanco. A single and two walks later, De La Rosa saw a Xavier Nady ball grounded up the middle to score two runs for a 3-1 D'Backs lead.

Carlos Gonzalez countered with his second home run of the game when he knocked it out of the park in the fourth inning. Then in the fifth, Dexter Fowler walked and then scored on a triple by Jonathan Herrera. Then on the next play, Herrera was thrown out at home plate on a grounder to third base.

The Rockies had a chance in the top of the eighth when Todd Helton reached third on a single and two wild pitches, but a fielder's choice on a Jose Lopez grounder saw Helton out at the plate.

In his return to the majors, Ian Stewart entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the seventh and struck out looking.

This series continues on Wednesday night at 7:40 p.m. MT on ROOT Sports. Jhoulys Chacin and Barry Enright duel.

Ty Wigginton Placed On DL; Ian Stewart Officially Recalled

On Tuesday afternoon, the Colorado Rockies placed Ty Wigginton on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain. As we learned earlier in the day, the corresponding move was recalling Ian Stewart from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Stewart is available for Tuesday night's series opener with the Arizona Diamondbacks, but he will not start.

Wigginton hit .233/.309/.383 with two home runs. He has played around the baseball field, but has seen most of his time at third base, though Jose Lopez took that over once Stewart was sent down on April 19. Wigginton hurt his oblique on a stolen base attempt against the Cubs last week.

Here is tonight's Rockies starting lineup:

CF Dexter Fowler
2B Jonathan Herrera
1B Todd Helton
SS Troy Tulowitzki
LF Carlos Gonzalez
3B Jose Lopez
RF Ryan Spilborghs
C Chris Iannetta
P Jorge De La Rosa

The Diamondbacks are starting Joe Saunders on the mound, a lefty, which means Jim Tracy sits Seth Smith and starts Spilborghs.

Rockies' Ian Stewart Recalled From Colorado Springs

First reported by David Ramsey of the Colorado Springs Gazette, the Colorado Rockies have recalled third baseman Ian Stewart from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Though the move has not yet become official, Ty Wigginton could head to the disabled list for his oblique injury. Both Troy Renck and Tracy Ringolsby confirm this move as they both saw Stewart on the flight to Arizona.

The Rockies sent Ian Stewart down to the minors on April 19, following a rough start. He had just two hits in 26 at-bats (.077/.143/.077) and struck out 11 times. Needing regular at-bats (he suffered an injury early in Spring Training that kept him out for most of March), the Rockies thought it was best for him to work on things in the minors. He blistered the ball to the tune of .361/.500/.750 with three doubles, one triple, three home runs and 13 RBI.

With Jose Lopez the starter at third by default, Stewart's return could help shore up the position. Stewart hit 25 homers in 2009, but can he find that power again?

Rockies Vs. Diamondbacks: Colorado's Road Warriors Head To Arizona After Home Series Loss

The Colorado Rockies remain in first place in the NL West, though they recently dropped two of three to the Pittsburgh Pirates at home. But now the Rockies head south to Arizona for a three-game road series with the Diamondbacks. The Rockies have a 10-3 road record, which does bode well for this series.

The Rockies last saw the Diamondbacks one month ago when the two opened the 2011 season at Coors Field. They were only able to get the first two games in, weather postponing the third game of the split series. Tuesday's starter, Jorge De La Rosa, pitched in the second game of the series and moved along quite well for 5.1 innings (5 K, 3 H) before a blister on his middle finger forced an early exit.

Since that Opening Weekend series, the teams have gone in the opposite directions. De La Rosa and Jhoulys Chacin have been the Rockies' top pitchers with Ubaldo Jimenez still not in his regular form. De La Rosa has picked up four wins in five starts and has a 2.61 ERA, a 2.58 FIP and a 0.968 WHIP. While his ground ball rate is at 43.2 percent, De La Rosa has lowered his walk rate to 2.9 walks per nine innings and, surprisingly, he has kept the ball inside the park extremely well (one homer in 31 innings).

Chacin has also pitched well, being the hard-luck loser in his last start (7 IP, 8 K, 3 R in a 3-0 loss). He's given up four home runs over his last two starts, but zero in his the 22 innings before that. He's also been helped immensely by a 60.4 percent ground ball rate. Except for his last start, Chacin has recorded at least 10 ground ball outs.

The Diamondbacks' pitchers are a mixed bag. Joe Saunders has a 5.93 ERA and a 5.09 FIP in five starts and has been hurt by allowing line drive 24 percent of the time. Barry Enright has been hurt by striking out too few and walking more than necessary. He's also given up six home runs in 29.2 innings.

Expected pitching matchups:

Tuesday, May 3, 7:40 p.m. MT, ROOT
Jorge De La Rosa vs. Joe Saunders

Wednesday, May 4, 7:40 p.m., ROOT
Jhoulys Chacin vs. Barry Enright

Thursday, May 5, 7:40 p.m. MT, ROOT
Jason Hammel vs. Armando Galarraga
