Diamondbacks Vs. Rockies: Jason Hammel Strong, But Colorado Offense Non-Existent

The Colorado Rockies' Jason Hammel was the hard luck loser in Wednesday night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Two unearned runs in the sixth inning for Hammel gave the D'Backs a 2-1 victory.

In the sixth inning, Ryan Roberts was safe at first base to start the inning because Alfredo Amezaga flubbed the throw across the field. Hammel then gave up a double to Kelly Johnson to have men on second and third. A Justin Upton ground out and a Chris Young single scored both runners, unearned runs at that.

The Rockies scored in the fourth inning, which started with a Seth Smith double. A wild pitch moved him to third and a Todd Helton sac fly had temporarily given the Rockies a 1-0 lead. The Rockies were 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left seven on base.

The pitching was outstanding. Hammel allowed those two unearned runs in seven innings and struck out five. Ian Kennedy allowed just that one run in eight innings of work.

The Rockies (24-24, 12-12 home) fell to third place in the division and will complete this series on Thursday night at 6:40 p.m. MT. Clayton Mortensen and Micah Owings are the scheduled starters.
