Colorado Rockies' Bill Geivett A 'Serious Candidate' For Astros' GM, According To Report

The Houston Astros are in the market for a new general manager, and Colorado Rockies' assistant general manager Bill Geivett is reportedly a leading candidate for the job.

The Houston Astros have a new owner, Jim Crane, who recently fired team president Tal Smith and general manager Ed Wade and now the team is in the market for a new GM. After Texas Rangers' assistant general manager Thad Levine withdrew from consideration, Colorado Rockies' assistant general manager Bill Geivett is now a "serious candidate" to become the next Astros GM, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Geivett previously served as an assistant GM for the Los Angeles Dodgers, in addition to working as the Farm Director for the Colorado Rockies and Montreal Expos and a special assistant to the GM with the Tampa Bay Rays. In an interview with MLB Trade Rumors back in August, Geivett talked about the draft pick he is most proud of in his career:

Troy Tulowitzki.  I coached at Long Beach State; Bill Schmidt, our VP of scouting, went to Long Beach State.  We felt like we knew him very well.  If available, we were going to be able to acquire a corner bat at a premium defensive position.  Bill Schmidt said he would be available, but I didn't think he'd be there for us [at the seventh overall pick].  The first day [Tulowitzki] showed up he said, "I just want to tell you guys I want to be here my whole career," and he hadn't even played in A ball yet.

The Astros have received permission from the Rockies to interview Geivett, so keep up with SB Nation Denver for timely updates on the process.
