Rapids out of playoff picture, in seventh place

The Colorado Rapids remain in seventh place in the Western Conference, following their 4-1 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night.

With a record of 9-19-4, not much has gone right for the Rapids this season. Colorado could very well end up in last place of the Western Conference as well, as the Rapids lead the Portland Timbers by one point, and Chivas USA by two points, with just two games left to play in Major League Soccer's regular season.

Colorado will look to end the season on a good note, as they prepare to take on Chivas USA on Oct. 20, before officially ending the season on Oct. 27 against the Houston Dynamo. The Rapids will have an opportunity to play spoiler against Houston, as the Dynamo are fighting for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Four Western Conference teams have already clinched playoff berths, as the Earthquakes, Real Salt Lake, Seattle Sounders FC and L.A. Galaxy are already headed to postseason play. The Vancouver Whitecaps currently lead FC Dallas by four points, for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Wondo hat trick sinks the Rapids

The Colorado Rapids were beaten by the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday behind a hat trick from Chris Wondolowski. It was a cold night in Denver, and there was even snow falling during the pre-game warmup at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

The Quakes got off to a quick start, with Marvin Chavez finding the back of the net just 95 seconds into the match. Wondolowski added a second SJ goal in the 11th minute, and he'd chip in with two more goals in the 51st and 84th minutes of play. With the hat trick, Wondolowski became the Earthquakes' all time leading scorer. He's now found the back of the net 62 times for the Quakes in his career, including 25 goals this season.

Colorado netted a consolation goal in stoppage time, as Andre Akpan scored from the penalty spot to make it 4-1. Jason Hernandez was given a red card for his tackle leading to the penalty. He'll miss the Earthquakes' next game because of that.

The Rapids were eliminated from playoff contention mid-week, and the SJ victory see's them bring their league-high point total to 64. Colorado will next be in action on Saturday, Oct. 20 when they head to Los Angeles to face Chivas USA.
