Arizona State vs. Colorado: Nelson Spruce assuming top receiver role for Buffs

Ron Chenoy-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The redshirt freshman leads the Buffaloes in receptions and receiving yards, and holds a tie for the lead in touchdown receptions.

With a team-leading 24 receptions and 260 yards receiving, redshirt freshman Nelson Spruce has grabbed the top receiver role for Colorado and has already earned comparisons to former Buffaloes receiver, Scotty McKnight. Wide receivers coach Bobby Kennedy even said as much when talking to Tom Kensler of the Denver Post about Spruce:

"Scotty may have had a step on Nelson, just a tad faster but not much more," Kennedy said. "The thing that Nelson gives us is obviously he is dependable and has good hands. He runs good routes."

Spruce had particularly strong games against Colorado State and Washington State, catching eight passes and a touchdown in each game. Just five games into his collegiate career, the 6'2, 195 pound receiver has already seemingly found some chemistry with junior quarterback Jordan Webb.

Spruce will look to continue his success on Thursday night when the Buffaloes host the Arizona State Sun Devils in an ESPN-televised game.
