The Colorado Buffaloes were upset on Saturday by Sacramento State, a loss that dropped Colorado to 0-2 on the season and has the gang over at SB Nation's Colorado blog The Ralphie Report none too pleased with their squad's performance:
So much for hope... that's all gone for 2012. The Buffaloes have lost their second game of the 2012 season in a 30-28 defeat to FCS Sacramento State.
Even in a tough loss such as this, normally some good can be found. Not the case here, really, as Jon Woods breaks down a litany of things that went wrong on Saturday in the Buffs loss:
It's clear that this team still has a lot of growing up to do. Both lines are struggling immensely, against the weakest competition they'll see all year. The secondary needs work and time to grow, and doesn't have a whole lot of time to do so with the Pac-12 conference schedule quickly approaching. Ray Polk and Greg Henderson should return next week and provide a boost, but Fresno State on the road is no pushover. The defense's inability to create turnovers is going to haunt the Buffaloes every week until they get it corrected.
As The Ralphie Report notes at the end of the post, these were the two easiest games on the Colorado schedule this season. Not a good sign for what lies ahead.

In a game that was supposed to be an easy rebound for the heavily favored Colorado Buffaloes, they were upset with a last second field goal by the Sacramento State Hornets to lose, 30-28.
It was Colorado that started strong with a 64-yard touchdown by running back Christian Powell just 72 seconds into the game. Six minutes later Powell found the end zone again and the Buffaloes were out to a 14-0 lead.
However, 21 unanswered points by the Hornets left the Buffaloes scrambling and down 24-21 at halftime. A one-yard touchdown by Powell in the third quarter gave Colorado the lead back and they were able to do just enough to hold Sacramento State off until the waning seconds.
With under five minutes remaining, the Hornets took over on their own 15-yard line and maintained a drive to the Colorado 13-yard line. A timeout with one second remaining set up a field goal opportunity for Edgar Castaneda which he knocked through from 30-yards out to give Sacramento State the upset victory.
The Hornets defeated the Oregon St. Beavers, also of the Pac-12, to open the 2011 season.
Box Score Hero: Sacramento State quarterback Garrett Safron finished 25-of-37 passing for 312 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. The Colorado offense altogether managed 341 total yards.
But Did They Cover? No. Colorado entered the game as 21.5 favorites to beat Sacramento State.

Next Week's Schedule:
Colorado at Fresno State, 6 p.m. MT, Saturday, Sept. 15
Northern Colorado at Sacramento State, 3:05 p.m. MT, Saturday, Sept. 15
The Colorado Buffaloes lead the Sacramento State Hornets, 14-7, at the end of the first quarter at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colo. Colorado running back Christian Powell has scored both touchdowns for the Buffs.
On the third play of the game, Powell broke off a 64-yard touchdown run, getting the Buffaloes on the board just a minute and 12 seconds into the contest. On Colorado's next drive, Powell scored again, this time from a yard out to put his team up by two touchdowns. The scoring run capped off an 8-play, 72-yard drive that lasted just over three minutes.
The Hornets answered with a long series of their own, as they ended an 11-play, 75-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Garrett Safron to wide receiver DeAndre Carter.
Colorado quarterback Jordan Webb completed four of six passes for 53 yards in the opening quarter.

The Colorado Buffaloes will host Sacramento State on Saturday at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colo., and while the Hornets should be an easily beatable opponent, the Buffs have plenty of areas in which they need to focus on improving, says David Gerhardt at The Ralphie Report. Establishing the run game should be No. 1 on the list of priorities.
The entire Colorado Offense vs. Running the Damn Ball - Everyone knows this is important. All of the coaches have stated that our performance last week was unacceptable. Coach Marshall took responsibility for his line's dismal performance, and I hope his players took that to heart. They spent most of the last game not on the same page and that cannot happen again. They need to sustain their blocks and get a push in the run game. The fullbacks weren't bad, but the tight ends also need to step up their game. They claim that this was the worst they looked in the past few months, and hopefully they are telling the truth and it was a terrible, depressing fluke.
In addition to running the ball, Ralphie Report lists a few other key matchups (in most cases, the Buffs are their own enemy):
The CU Receivers vs. The Dropsies The Young Running Backs vs. Earning Opportunities Colorado DBs vs. Growing up Quickly Colorado's Front Seven vs. The Run CU Defense vs. Forcing Turnovers The Kick Coverage team
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. MT, and the game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.

Colorado Buffaloes coach Jon Embree met with reporters and fans in a Tuesday press conference, answering questions from both sides on topics mostly dealing with the team's disappointing opening loss to Colorado State.
The press conference was the first of its kind this season. The mixture of questions from fans and the media is an idea that the school feels brings the team's supporters closer to the inside workings of the team.
Embree broached many topics, but what does he want to see the Buffaloes do better this Saturday against Sacramento State?
"Defensively, better tackling; I'd like to see a few more turnovers," he said. "Offensively, we have to run the football, period. We need to be better running the football. That's what I'm looking for from an offensive standpoint, and better with our protection."

Colorado freshman cornerback Yuri Wright says he's ready to step in should injured sophomore starter Greg Henderson not be able to play Saturday when the Buffaloes host Sacramento State in their home opener at 1 p.m.
Henderson sprained his right ankle in the Buffaloes' 22-17 loss to Colorado State last weekend and is listed as questionable for the game.
"I'm ready right now," Wright told buffzone.com. "I was ready a week ago, so I'm ready right now to step in if I have to."
Colorado already starts another freshman at corner in Kenneth Crawley. Wright said losing out on the starting job has motivated him.
"It definitely showed me that I need to work a lot harder," he said. "He's a good player and I have to give him that. Hopefully I just keep working and get better and one day I'll be the starter."

The Colorado Buffaloes' ground game managed only 58 yards on 29 carries on Saturday against the Colorado State Rams. After the game, offensive line coach Steve Marshall said his preparation was not sufficient to get his unit ready for the season opener.
On Monday, he reiterated that point. Via Kyle Ringo of Buffzone.com:
"Well, not good enough," Marshall said Monday when asked about the ground game. "We have a whole new kind of system of what we're doing and we didn't execute well enough on a consistent basis.
"We were one here and one there. When you get around teams that can really run the football, it's a down-after-down deal and that didn't happen on Saturday. That's my fault. I've got to prepare them better."
Colorado was inconsistent with its running game in 2011, finishing under 100 yards in six of 13 games. Marshall will be looking for some improvement when the Buffaloes face Sacramento State on Saturday at 1 p.m. MT at Folsom Field.
