Colorado's Jordan Webb Named Pac-12 Offensive Player Of The Week

Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Jordan Webb was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week by the conference today.

Webb was instrumental in leading Colorado to a big fourth-quarter comeback on the road at Washington State. After going down 31-14 just seconds into the fourth quarter, Webb began Colorado's comeback with a 70-yard touchdown pass to Nick Kasa. He then finished the comeback with nine seconds left, scrambling into the endzone from the four-yard line.

When the comeback was complete, the Buffaloes had racked up 255 yards of offense in the quarter. Webb finished the game throwing 29-42 for 345 yards and two touchdowns, while adding two more scores on the ground. On the year, Webb is now 68-of-120 for 777 yards and six touchdowns.

The performance boosted the Buffs to their first win of the year, a welcome salve after a string of losses to rival Colorado State, FCS Sacramento State, and a 69-14 blowout at Fresno State.

Colorado Vs. Washington State 2012: Buffaloes Earn Much-Needed First Victory Of The Season

The Colorado Buffaloes earned their first victory of the season in come-from-behind fashion on Saturday, taking down the host Washington State Cougars, 35-34. Colorado scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to earn the victory, the final blow being a Jordan Webb touchdown run in the final minute that capped a 13-play, 70-yard Buffaloes drive.

Needless to say, the gang over at SB Nation's Colorado blog The Ralphie Report was happy with what transpired on Saturday:

We really needed that, the players really needed that, and this embattled coaching staff REALLY needed that. While Washington State isn't great, that was definitely something worth cheering for. I'm happy. It's only one game, but I'm happy.

Colorado will put their one-game winning streak on the line next Saturday when the Buffaloes host the UCLA Bruins. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. MT.

Colorado Vs. Washington State Final: Buffaloes Defeat Cougars, 35-34

The Colorado Buffaloes won their first game of the season against the Washington State Cougars Saturday when quarterback Jordan Webb scored on a last-minute touchdown to give Colorado a 35-34 come-from-behind victory.

Washington State separated itself from Colorado in the second quarter, but the Buffaloes kept coming back.

The Cougars, led by quarterback Connor Halliday, scored two touchdowns in the second. Marquess Wilson caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Halliday at the open of the second quarter. Then, Halliday connected with Isiah Myers three minutes later.

Webb scored on a one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. But Halliday and Wilson connected again, this time for a 49-yard touchdown score.

Colorado outplayed Washington State in the fourth quarter, scoring on three touchdowns while the Cougars put up field goals. Those field goals had been just enough to keep the Buffaloes at bay. But Webb capped a 13-play, 70-yard drive with his game-winning touchdown scamper.

Colorado Vs. Washington State Halftime Update: Buffaloes Trail Cougars 21-7

The Colorado Buffaloes trail the Washington State Cougars at the half after two unanswered Cougar touchdowns in the second quarter. Colorado has struggled to contain Washington State quaterback Connor Halliday, who has completed 15 of 23 passes for 200 yards, and has thrown for three touchdowns already.

Colorado quarterback Jordan Webb, recently facing speculation that he could be benched in favor of backup Connor Wood, has completed 11 of 13 first-half attempts, good for 129 yards.

Colorado had been tied with Washington State at the end of the first quarter, but the Cougars put together two successful scoring drives early in the second quarter, with Halliday connecting for touchdowns with Marquess Wilson and then Isiah Myers.

Colorado Vs. Washington State Score Update: Buffaloes And Cougars Tied, 7-7

The Colorado Buffaloes and Washington State Cougars are locked in a 7-7 tie after one quarter of play at Martin Stadium in Pullman, Wash. Both teams scored on their first offensive possession of the game.

Washington State got on the board first, as quarterback Connor Halliday connected on a 32-yard touchdown strike to freshman wide receiver Gabe Marks to cap off a six-play, 75-yard drive. Colorado would answer a little over four minutes later, as Buffaloes wide receiver Nelson Spruce caught a 16-yard pass from quarterback Jordan Webb for the score.

The defenses held up through the end of the quarter, as Colorado's Jered Bell intercepted a pass at the CU 3-yard line and returned it for 37 yards. That gave the Buffs prime field position, but they were unable to capitalize. The Cougars stopped Colorado short of the endzone, and Buffaloes kicker Will Oliver missed a 30-yard field goal.

Colorado Vs. Washington State: Buffs Need To Have 'Fun,' Says Jon Embree

From the outside, whatever it is that the Colorado Buffaloes have done this season does not appear to have been fun. From the inside, head coach Jon Embree agrees that it has not been fun.

The Buffaloes are 0-3, and that includes a loss at home to Sacramento State. Embree told B.G. Brooks at CUBuffs.com that pressure has gotten to his team on game days:

"We're talking to the team about having fun. When they get into games, they get so robotic. With all the hard work you put in, the game is when you're supposed to have fun. We're not doing that."

So Embree had a separate 10-minute meeting earlier this week with each of the 70 players that were set to travel to Saturday's game at the Washington State Cougars. The point of the meetings were to reassure each player and ask each player to relax and have fun Saturday.

Though there is very little fun about giving up 476.3 yards per game, and that's what the Buffaloes have done through three games in 2012. Their pass efficiency defense is 119th in FBS out of 120 teams, which is not a desirable number to have going into a game against a Mike Leach-led Cougars team.

The game kicks off Saturday at 2 p.m. MT on FX.

Colorado QB Coach: 'Jordan Webb Is Our Quarterback'

The Colorado Buffaloes are 0-3 so far this season and their offense has struggled a lot this year, and typically when the offense struggles the blame goes to the quarterback. Kansas Jayhawk transfer Jordan Webb has started all three games, and even though he was benched for Conor Wood after throwing a pair of interceptions last week.

However, Colorado quarterback coach Rip Scherer told the Denver Post that he still believes in him, and says that Webb is their starting quarterback:

Jordan is our starter, will be our starter (Saturday at Washington State) and will continue to be," Scherer said.

"People misinterpreted this last week," Scherer added. "I tried to explain it. When you've got a lot of guys that haven't played very much, to make it a point early in the game, we're going to put him in for a series. So whoever your No. 2 (quarterback) is, he gets experience under fire. So if he has to play later in the year or at some point in the game, all his duty hasn't been mop-up duty."

Sounds like that Scherer is going to give Wood, as well as other players, some meaningful snaps early in the game. His reasoning makes sense to give players playing time with something on the line. However, with this being a bad Colorado team, that playing time early games could also be used as an evaluation to see if Wood, or any other player can perform well with something on the line.
