Avalanche Vs. Flames: Avs Continue Winless Ways With 5-2 Loss To Calgary

Another night, another loss for the Colorado Avalanche. This time they dropped a 5-2 decision to the Calgary Flames. Jarome Iginla and Mark Giordano scored power plays goals within 30 seconds of each other early in the first period to put the Flames up 2-0. Mark Olver scored a goal for the Avs at 7:35 in the first, but Rene Bourque answered back in the closing minute of the first period for a 3-1 Flames lead.

After a scoreless second period for both teams, Ales Kotalik and Jarome Iginla scored in a two-minute time span to put the Flames up 5-1. Cody McLeod scored a power play goal for the Avs with six seconds left in the game.

Peter Budaj made only 23 saves on 28 shots while Miikka Kiprusoff made 27 saves on 29 shots.

The Avalanche (26-36-8, 60 points) are now on a 10-game winless streak and will look to end it on Saturday when the face the Edmonton Oilers, the worst team in the league. The puck drops at 8:00 p.m. MT in Rexall Place.

Avalanche Vs. Flames: Will A Nine-Game Losing Streak End Tonight?

The Colorado Avalanche enter Thursday's game against the Calgary Flames with a nine-game losing streak and 19 losses on their last 20 games. On Wednesday night, the Avalanche blew a 2-0 lead over the Vancouver Canucks when they allowed three goals in the third period.

The Avs are trending up, though, in draft selection. Right now, their 60 points are good for the third overall pick (the way the lottery is set up that will most likely be their position). They are one point ahead of Ottawa and five points of the NHL-worst Edmonton Oilers.

In their season series with Calgary, the Avalanche are 1-3 with this game and another one in April left to play. That lone win came on Oct. 28, back when this team looked promising. The most recent loss came on Feb. 14, which was a 9-1 drubbing at the Pepsi Center.

The puck drops at 7:00 p.m. MT and the game will be televised on Altitude.
