Denver Broncos center J.D. Walton was placed on injured reserve on Monday, according to Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post. Linebacker Joe Mays was added to the 53-man roster to take the spot of Walton.

Walton suffered a fractured left ankle in the win over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. The center had to be helped off the field early in the game, making it immediately clear how serious the injury truly was.

Walton, drafted out of Baylor in 2010, has started every game at center for the Broncos since the 2010 season. With Walton out for the season, the Broncos will turn to Dan Koppen to take over the center duties the remainder of the year.

Koppen, who has won multiple Super Bowls with the New England Patriots, was named to the Pro Bowl in 2007. The center missed the 2011 season after fracturing his ankle in Week 1 and was cut by the Patriots just prior to the 2012 season.

The Broncos take on the Patriots on Sunday, with kickoff set for 2:25 p.m. MT.
