BYU Vs. Boise State 2012: Offense A Problem For Broncos

Despite picking up a 7-6 win over the BYU Cougars on Thursday night, the Boise State Broncos probably felt that they could have done better as they looked back on the game. Winning the turnover margin by five and scoring a touchdown on a pick-six represented a great day for the defensive side of the ball, but the offense was anemic and couldn't help produce a single point.

Boise State blog One Bronco Nation Under God reacted with concern regarding the ineffective attack:

Our offense still has a lot of work. It was definitely a step back tonight. Southwick finished 15/25 for 145 yards but seemed 0 for everything in important situations. D.J. Harper looked good in spurts, but the offensive line got beat again this week in the trenches. It was pathetic that Boise State only got 7 points on 5 turnovers, especially the goal line stand by BYU after the fumble on the goal line.

The Broncos will face off against New Mexico on Sept. 29. If the Broncos are planning on putting up big offensive numbers any time this season, doing it against a Lobos defense that has given up 94 points in its last two games wouldn't be a bad time to start.

BYU Vs. Boise State 2012 Final Score: Broncos Get 7-6 Win After Cougars Miss 2-Point Conversion

The Boise State Broncos narrowly defeated the BYU Cougars, 7-6, in a game where neither offense had much to shout about. Defensive tackle Michael Atkinson gave the Broncos their only score of the evening on a pick-six, and BYU's lone scoring drive came up short when they failed to take the lead on a two-point conversion.

Boise State's offense plugged away all night without much to show for it. Quarterback Joe Southwick went 12-for-25 for 145 yards, and D.J. Harper collected 112 yards on 31 carries. Of the 12 Broncos drives, five resulted in punts, one was a missed field goal, five were turnovers on downs because the team abandoned kicking field goals after the miss, and one was the final drive as the clock ran out.

BYU's offense fared even worse, turning the ball over five times. Senior quarterback Riley Nelson was benched, and freshman Taysom Hill led the Cougars on their only scoring drive, a 95-yard march for a touchdown that resulted in the failed two-point conversion.

BYU Vs. Boise State Score Update: Broncos Up 7-0 After 3 Quarters

The Boise State Broncos are leading the BYU Cougars in the fourth quarter, 7-0, with their only score coming on a pick-six by defensive tackle Michael Atkinson.

Joe Southwick is 12-for-21 for just 106 yards, but he's being smart with his throws and protecting the ball, which is more than BYU's Riley Nelson can say. The Broncos' secondary has intercepted Nelson three times. Jamar Taylor has one of those interceptions as well as a forced fumble on a sack. D.J. Harper has 109 yards on 25 carries.

Boise State missed a field goal in the first quarter, and ever since then, head coach Chris Peterson has been going for it on fourth down. Of the 8 drives following the missed field goal, three are punts and five ended with the ball being turned over on downs.

BYU is hanging in the game by virtue of a strong defense, including standing the Broncos up at the 1-yard line, but the Broncos have pulled ahead based on their own defensive performance and five turnovers from the Cougars.

Boise State Vs. BYU: Pick-6 Gives Broncos The Lead

The Boise State Broncos are up 7-0 on the BYU Cougars thanks to a touchdown, but they didn't just score, they scored with style. Defensive tackle Michael Atkinson picked off Riley Nelson and trucked 36 yards downfield in a textbook Fat Guy Touchdown.

Offensive struggles have defined the game for both sides, but Nelson, the BYU quarterback, is having the worst of it. He's 4-for-8 for just 19 yards with three interceptions and a lost fumble. Midway through the third quarter, Boise State has managed less than 200 yards and turned it over on downs twice. An early field goal attempt went wide, leaving head coach Chris Peterson with little faith in his kicking team.

BYU Vs. Boise State Halftime Score: Broncos And Cougars Scoreless As Offenses Sputter

The Boise State Broncos and the BYU Cougars are scoreless at the half. Neither team's offense has been able to gain any traction, with BYU turning the ball over twice in the first half, and Boise State simply failing to drive the ball.

After Michael Frisina missed a 33-yard field goal midway through the first quarter, Boise State has twice gone for it on fourth down. Both attempts were unsuccessful, resulting in the team turning the ball over on downs at Boise State's 20 and 22.

Jamar Taylor is the star of the first half, coming through for Boise State in key moments. When an unsuccessful punt handed BYU the ball just outside the red zone, Taylor made an interception to prevent the Cougars from scoring. Later in the second quarter, Taylor forced a fumble, getting Boise State the ball at midfield and halting a BYU drive just as it started picking up steam.

Boise State quarterback Joe Southwick is 10-for-17 for 78 yards so far. D.J. Harper leads the rushing attack for Boise State, picking up 77 yards on 14 carries.

BYU Vs. Boise State Score Update: Score Tied 0-0 After Broncos Defense Gets Key Interception

The BYU Cougars and the Boise State Broncos are locked in a scoreless contest after Boise State's defense came through with a crucial interception when BYU was in the red zone.

An unsuccessful fake punt by Boise State at their own 22-yard line handed the ball to the Cougars with great field position as the first quarter drew to a close. While BYU had little trouble driving it to within the five, an illegal block penalty sent them to 3rd and 16. A clear passing down led nicely to Jamar Taylor picking off Riley Nelson at the two-yard line and kept the game scoreless.

Neither team's offense was capable of much in the early going, with the Cougars mustering nine net yards of offense on three drives before a botched fake punt by the Broncos set them up just outside the red zone with two minutes left in the quarter. Boise State fared no better, failing to pick up a first down on two of the team's first three drives, with the other ending with a missed field goal. The fourth drive was the fake punt.

Boise State Vs. BYU: Broncos LG Joe Kellogg Out For Game

Boise State senior offensive guard Joe Kellogg will miss Thursday's game against BYU, the Idaho Statesman reported.

Kellogg, a three-year starter for the No. 24-ranked Broncos, will be replaced by junior Spencer Gerke, who started in place of Kellogg in two games last year when Kellogg was out with a knee injury.

The most experienced Broncos starter, Kellogg has seen action in each season since his freshman year of 2009. He's on both the Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award watch lists. Boise State has finished first and third in sacks allowed the last two seasons, surrendering .63 per game in each season.

Boise State dropped their opener 17-13 to Michigan State and defeated Miami (Ohio) 39-12 in their second game.
