After a season-opening 17-13 loss to the Michigan State Spartans on Aug. 31, the Boise State Broncos bounced back in a big way on Saturday with a 39-12 win over the Miami (OH) RedHawks.
Boise State running back D.J. Harper was the star of the game, rushing for 173 yards and three touchdowns on just 18 carries, and quarterback Joe Southwick rebounded from his subpar opener to complete 23 of 30 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception.
The gang at SB Nation's One Bronco Nation Under God blog was happy to see the Boise State offense back on track, but they did note some areas of improvement despite the easy victory:
On third glance
The offense was leaps and bounds better than it was against Michigan State, but you and I know that Chris Petersen will find coaching points aplenty. First, turnovers. Second, red zone scoring (the Broncos were 0-for-2 to start the game). Third, eh, let's forget about No. 1 and No. 2 for now and just celebrate the fact that the Broncos are back in the win column and the offense works again.
The Broncos next face the BYU Cougars on Thursday night. BYU was upset on Saturday, 24-21, by the Utah Utes.

A huge second half by Boise St. Broncos allowed them to blowout the Miami RedHawks 39-12. The Broncos started strong in the third quarter by outscoring the Miami 21-0, and Miami had no answers for what Boise State was throwing at them.
Boise State running back D.J. Harper was the player of the game as he rushed for 173 yards on just 18 carries, plus three touchdowns. Harper also helped out in the passing game by catching one pass for 21 yards which was his fourth touchdown of the game.
For all the questions that people had about Broncos starting quarterback Joe Southwick, he answered critics on Saturday by completing 23-of-30 passes for 295 yards, two touchdowns and had one pick which happened in the red zone.
This game could have been an even bigger blowout for Boise State as that Southwick interception came in the red zone, there was a missed Boise State field goal and also a fumble deep in their own territory in the second quarter which Miami took advantage of and scored their only touchdown.
Overall, Boise State dominated Miami both offensively and defensively, and after giving up over 200 yards on the ground against Michigan State two weeks ago they rebounded nicely by allowing just 49 yards.

The Boise St. Broncos offense blew up in the third quarter by outscoring the Miami RedHawks 21-0, and now lead 36-9. Broncos running back D.J. Harper scored two touchdowns in the third quarter which came on a 14-yard run, and the other was a 47-yard scamper.
The third touchdown in the quarter came when quarterback Joe Southwick 11-yard pass to Chris Potter which came late in the third quarter.
The Boise State defense also puffed out their chest and shutdown the Miami offense by forcing them to punt on both of their third quarter drives. One drive only lasted six plays for 21 yards, and the other was a three-and-out that netted only one yard.
Miami is currently driving and moved the ball 59 yards on four plays, and that drive is actually their longest of the game.

The Boise St. Broncos are in a fight against the Miami RedHawks, and lead 15-9 at the half. The only touchdown for Boise State came late in the second quarter on a six-play, 75-yard drive with running back D.J. Harper scoring on a 1-yard sweep to give Boise State the six-point lead.
Miami scored all of their nine points in the second quarter, first was a field. The second score was set up when Boise State freshman running back Jack Fields fumbled the ball at their own 8-yard line. This allowed Miami to get their first touchdown of the game three plays later on a halfback pass where running back Spencer Treadwell threw a 2-yard pass to Andy Cruse.
That touchdown gave Miami a 9-8 lead and so they went for the two-point conversion which was not converted as Miami quarterback Zac Dysert overthrew his receiver.
Boise State quarterback Joe Southwick is having a solid game by completing 11-for-17 passes for 188 yards with one touchdown and an interception.

The Boise State Broncos lead the Miami University RedHawks, 8-0, after one quarter at Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho. The Broncos scored on their second drive of the quarter, after the first drive resulted in a turnover.
Boise State quarterback Joe Southwick guided the Broncos to two long drives in the quarter, as he completed six of eight passes for 88 yards and a touchdown. In their first possession, they marched 70 yards down the field and ended up inside the Miami 10-yard line, but Southwick was intercepted in the end zone on third down.
The Broncos would get the ball back shortly thereafter following a Miami three-and-out. In that possession, it only took them three plays to drive 55 yards and score on a 21-yard pass from Southwick to running back D.J. Harper.
Harper ran four times for 31 yards in the quarter, in addition to the touchdown reception.

The Boise State Broncos open their home schedule against Miami of Ohio, and some fans are rushing to judge new starting quarterback Joe Southwick. With Kellen Moore departing to the NFL after holding down the position for so long, some Broncos followers are already getting uneasy watching Southwick's play, even if it was one game against a solid Michigan State defense.
Kevan Lee, of One Bronco Nation Under God, finds those Bronco fans to be misguided at best:
Joe Southwick has played one game as Boise State's starting quarterback. Can you really judge a player after one game (against a defense that was quasi-NFL)? You can, technically. You shouldn't. Southwick will be Boise State's quarterback for the forseeable future unless something much worse than August 31 happens.
There are a couple factors at play here: 1) how badly did Southwick play, and 2) what's the alternative. I get that some people might not be happy with an offense that did not score a touchdown and a quarterback who did not make big plays. That's understandable, to a certain extent, considering the lap of luxury we all had been sitting in with Kellen Moore. (I'm of the mind that he played neither badly nor well, kind of an in-between shrug of a game.)
Southwick was just 15-of-31 for 169 yards and an interception in Boise State's loss at Michigan State.
The Broncos will look to bounce back from their season-opening loss to the Spartans when they host the RedHawks on the blue turf at 2 p.m. MT. The game will be televised on NBC Sports Network.

The Boise St. Broncos return to the field after a bye week. Will they be able to bounce back from the loss to Michigan State and defeat the Miami (OH) RedHawks?
8 months ago Update 0 comments
The Boise State Broncos will be two weeks removed from their 17-13, season-opening loss to the Michigan State Spartans when they host the Miami (OH) Redhawks on Saturday, and they'll do so as heavy favorites.
The Broncos are 21-point favorites on Odds Shark for Saturday's 2 p.m. MT kickoff from Boise, Idaho. The over/under is set around 54.
It will be Boise State's first chance to reclaim some glory after dropping out of the AP and Coaches' Top 25 following the loss to the Spartans. A big win over the Redhawks could give them that. The Redhawks (1-1) were thrashed by Ohio State, 56-10, in their opener but rebounded last week against Southern Illinois, winning 30-14.
The game will be broadcast by NBC Sports Network.
