The Boise State Broncos aren't as highly rated as they have been in previous preseasons. They range from 18 to 26 in some of the more prominent polls that can be found on SB Nation and around the country.
Jason Kirk of SB Nation compiled these rankings into a table to create a composite Top 25. Boise State shows up at No. 23 in Kirk's average ratings. The Broncos' best preseason position came from the BCS simulation, which placed them at No. 18.
Chris Petersen's squad heads to East Lansing, Mich., to open up the 2012 season against the Michigan State Spartans on Friday. This will mark the beginning of the last year the Broncos will play in the Mountain West Conference before heading to the Big East in 2013.

SB Nation's Simulated BCS standings have been released for the first time coming up to the 2012 NCAA regular season and they unsurprisingly feature a glut of SEC teams at the top, with Alabama leading the pack for the third year in a row.
Despite being ranked in the high 20s in most polls, simulated or otherwise, leading into the regular season, Boise State managed to place No. 18 on the list of BCS style aggregated stats and standings.
There were no other teams in the Rocky Mountain region that cracked the top 25 other than the Broncos, but both Utah and BYU cracked the top 40 -- the Utes placed at No. 34 while BYU edged in at No. 36. For more on how the BCS Simulated Standings work, check out the post on SB Nation.

SB Nation's BlogPoll has been released prior to the start of the season, where the network's college football bloggers put out their own Top 25 lists to rival the official ones. The names at the top are the expected ones, with USC and Alabama getting the top two spots.
A few teams from the Rocky Mountain Region managed to snag votes, with the Boise State Broncos making the cut for the top 25. Boise State is ranked 23rd in the nation by the poll with 4.08 points per blog. No other Rocky Mountain school made the cut in the top, but four other schools did manage to receive votes -- Utah, BYU, New Mexico St. and New Mexico.
College Football season will begin this weekend, and that should shape the future BlogPolls with some actual results behind them.

The Boise St. Broncos have been consistent in their preseason poll rankings, and are ranked No. 24 in the composite Top 25.
The composite Top 25 takes into account the USA Today Coaches' and Associated Press polls, as well as Football Outsiders projected F/+ rankings, the SI.com Top 25 and SB Nation Studios' Top 25 Countdown.
The Broncos were ranked No. 22 in the USA Today Coaches' poll, No. 24 in the AP poll, No. 24 in SB Nation Studios' Top 25 countdown, and No. 26 by Football Outsiders.
Boise St. sits one spot ahead of 2010's national champion, Auburn, and one spot below media darling Notre Dame.
The Broncos open the 2012 season on Aug. 31 at No. 13 Michigan State, in what appears to be Boise St.'s toughest test all year.

The USC Trojans have opened as the No. 1 team in the Associated Press' Preseason Top 25 Poll. They moved ahead of the LSU Tigers as a result of Tyrann Mathieu's dismissal from the team earlier in August. The Tigers opened at No. 3. USC received 25 first-place votes while Alabama, the defending national champion, took 17 to reach No. 2 in the poll. LSU received 16 first-place votes.
The Boise St. Broncos came in at No. 24, just ahead of the Louisville Cardinals. The school received 212 votes in polling. Utah and BYU each received a smattering of votes to make it just outside of the top 25.
Earlier in August, the Coaches poll had LSU as No. 1 with Alabama and USC following at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
The college football season kicks off in two weeks.

The Associated Press Preseason Top 25 Poll will come out on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. MT and we can expect the Boise St. Broncos to be somewhere in the final five spots. In the Coaches Poll, the Broncos came in at No. 22 after finishing at No. 6 at the end of the 2011 season.
Boise State's turnover at multiple positions has certainly made the team weaker, especially with a new quarterback ready to take over for Kellen Moore. However, this is a team that is still the favorite to win the Mountain West. Joe Southwick is likely to emerge as the starter under center, but the defensive changes will be just as vital. Gone are the likes of Shea McClellin, Billy Winn and George Iloka. The Michigan St. Spartans will offer a tough season-opening test when the two teams meet in East Lansing, Mich., on Aug. 31.
SI.com recently ranked Boise State as the No. 23 team, which certainly gives another indication that we'll see the Broncos at the back end of the AP Top 25.

Sports Illustrated released its preseason college football top 25 rankings and the Boise St. Broncos check in at No. 23. They come in ahead of the Auburn Tigers and the N.C. State Wolfpack but behind the likes of the TCU Horned Frogs and the Ohio St. Buckeyes.
The Broncos have experienced a massive turnover by losing a senior class that had won more games in their careers than all others before them. Gone is the leader, quarterback Kellen Moore and his 50-3 career record. Off to the NFL are the likes of Shea McClellin and George Iloka and many other defensive players.
Boise St. is ranked No. 22 in the preseason USA Today Coaches Poll and will look to make the Associated Press' Top 25 when it comes out over the weekend. Expect to find the Broncos at the back of that poll, too. Until then, read SI.com's Boise State preview.

The LSU Tigers are the preseason No. 1 team in the Coaches Top 25 poll released on Thursday. The Boise St. Broncos come in at No. 22.
The Tigers, losers to the Crimson Tide in the BCS title game in January, received two fewer first place votes than Alabama, 20-18, but finished with four more total points. The No. 3 USC Trojans, previously ineligible due to sanctions, finished 11 points behind Alabama. The No. 4 Oklahoma Sooners are over 100 points behind USC.
Other notes to entertain here: Boise State's opening opponent, the Michigan St. Spartans, came in at No. 13. Utah and BYU appear in the "Others receiving votes" category.
In a few years' time, the Coaches Poll won't matter in determining a national champion since the BCS system will be blown up.
Here is the complete poll:
| Rank | Team (first-place votes) | Record | Points | Final 2011 rank | |
| 1. | LSU (18) | 13-1 | 1,403 | 2 | |
