Kellen Moore Has Quiet Minicamp With Lions

The winningest collegiate quarterback in NCAA history is just another NFL rookie in 2012. The leap from college to the National Football League can be an adjustment for many players, but Boise St. Broncos QB Kellen Moore feels like it is a transition he has made before:

"I don’t really care (what people say) — it’s kind of similar to (going) from high school to college," Moore said Saturday. "It’s not some shocking new thing."

And even Detroit Lions head coach Jim Swartz recognizes that Moore is handling the new setting like a veteran, despite entering the league as an undrafted free agent:

"You can tell he’s been around a lot of football," Schwartz said Saturday. "He’s a coach’s son, (the NFL) isn’t too big for him, he’s been in a lot of big games. You see a lot of guys come through a rookie camp, you get an undrafted player, and it’s big for them.

"But (Moore) is used to being a quarterback. He steps in and he’s used to being the center of attention. That shows through the most about him."

Moore is currently fighting for a backup quarterback position heading into the 2012 NFL season.

Kellen Moore Calls 2012 NFL Draft A "Very Frustrating Process," But Is Motivated To Prove Worth With Lions

Detroit Lions quarterback Kellen Moore won 50 games and completed 74 percent of his passes during his four-year career at Boise State, but that apparently wasn't enough to earn an official selection in the 2012 NFL Draft. In a conversation with Larry Lage of the Detroit Free Press, Moore called the NFL Draft a "[v]ery frustrating process, but a great outcome in the end," as the Detroit Lions snatched him up in free agency to provide depth behind Matthew Stafford and Shaun Hill.

Scouts found issues with Moore's lack of size and arm strength, but he is glad to get the opportunity to prove them wrong in the NFL, saying: "There's a lot of ways to evaluate a quarterback. Some evaluate it and put a lot of emphasis on that. That's fine. Smile, and move on." Now Moore gets to reunite with former Boise State wide receiver Titus Young, who was drafted by the Lions in 2011.

Undrafted Free Agents 2012: Kellen Moore To Sign With Lions, According To Report

Seven rounds went and six Boise St. Broncos players were drafted, but quarterback Kellen Moore was not one of those lucky six. However, being undrafted does provide Moore with a slight benefit than his six teammates, who helped lead the team to a 50-3 record over the last four seasons: Moore is able to sign with any team he wants to now. And that he did, signing with the Detroit Lions, according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

This move does make sense for both sides. The Lions have only two quarterbacks on the roster currently following the departure of Drew Stanton. Incumbent start Matthew Stafford isn't going anywhere any time soon, but Shaun Hill, the backup, might eventually want to move on. This way, Moore lands in a place that does need a third quarterback. Plus, Stafford is always a potential risk for injury, which certainly could land Moore as a backup at some point.
