FCS All-America Team 2011: Montana Grizzlies Place Three On AP Teams

The 2011 AP FCS All-America Teams were announced on Thursday afternoon, and the Montana Grizzlies had two first-team All-Americans. Linebacker Caleb McSurday and defensive back Trumaine Johnson took first-team honors while lineman Jon Apperud was voted to the third team.

McSurdy had 127 tackles, 9 tackles for a loss and 4 sacks as the leader of the defense. Johnson picked off two passes, broke up 12 passes and defended 14 balls. The Grizzlies play the No. 1 Sam Houston State Bearkats on Friday in the semifinals of the 2011 FCS Playoffs. Sophomore running back Tim Flanders leads three Bearkats named to the AP All-America teams.

The Montana State Bobcats fell to Sam Houston State last Saturday, even with Elvis Akpla's amazing catch. Akpla, who caught 57 passes for 1,045 yards and 11 touchdowns, was named to the third team.

All-American Team 2011, SB Nation: Alabama's Trent Richardson, Boise State's Nate Potter Make The Cut

It should come as no surprise that the Jim McElwain-coached Trent Richardson made SB Nation's inaugural 2011 College Football All-America team. Bill Connelly sees Richardson as the clear choice to be the No. 1 back on this team due to being the best player on one of the top teams in the country. Richardson will likely take his talents to the NFL as an underclassman while McElwain now has the tough task of creating a winning program for the Colorado St. Rams.

Also making the cut is Boise St. Broncos tackle Nate Potter. He made second-team AP All-America on Wednesday and second-team Walter Camp All-America last week. Potter might not be a first-round pick like former Broncos Ryan Clady was, but he's following in Clady's footsteps of making All-America teams.

The journey to the NFL for the two begins after their bowl games, the Las Vegas Bowl for Potter and the BCS National Title Game for Richardson.

All-American Teams 2011, AP: Colorado's Ryan Miller Makes 3rd Team; Trent Richardson Is 1st Team RB

For the second year in a row, the Colorado Buffaloes have an AP All-American. In 2010, Nate Solder was a first team AP All-American while in 2011 Ryan Miller made the third-team guard position. Miller had earlier been named a second-team Walter Camp All-American.

Also of note, Alabama running back Trent Richardson made first-team AP All-American with his 1,500-plus rushing yards and 20 touchdowns. Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator and Colorado St. Rams head coach Jim McElwain can now point to producing another Heisman Trophy finalist and AP All-American when he starts recruiting for the Rams.

The Boise St. Broncos had just two All-Americans and neither was quarterback Kellen Moore. Tackle Nate Potter was a second-team tackle and George Iloka was a third-team safety. Moore was left off as Heisman winner Robert Griffin III was the first team quarterback; Stanford's Andrew Luck made the second team; and USC's Matt Barkley took the third team.

Maxwell Award Winner 2011: Andrew Luck Beats Out Kellen Moore, Trent Richardson

Is Stanford Cardinal quarterback Andrew Luck on his way to winning the 2011 Heisman Trophy? He picked up the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award and the Maxwell Award for top collegiate player of the year. The announcement closed out ESPN's 2011 College Football Awards show on Thursday night.

Luck threw for 3,150 yards and 35 touchdowns, the latter a new personal and school record for a single season. He also broke John Elway's career passing touchdown record, which stands at 80 with one game left to go. Luck's season highlight came when he delivered a victory for Stanford in triple overtime against the USC Trojans.

Boise St. Broncos quarterback Kellen Moore and Alabama Crimson Tide running back Trent Richardson were the other finalists. Moore threw for 3,507 yards and 41 touchdowns as a senior. He also broke the NCAA career victories record and has 49 heading into the Las Vegas Bowl. Richardson will play in the national title game. He has 1,583 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns.

2011 All-American Team, Walter Camp: Colorado's Ryan Miller Makes 2nd Team

The Colorado Buffaloes have a Walter Camp All-American offensive for the second year in a row. One year after future NFL first-round pick Nate Solder was named a 2010 First-Team Walter Camp All-American on the offensive line, Ryan Miller made the 2011 Walter Camp All-American Second Team on the offensive line.

Miller is a 6-foot-8, 298-pound offensive lineman who should follow Solder into the NFL. He might not be a first-round draft pick, but Miller surely has a future in the league. Maybe the Denver Broncos will come calling.

2011 College Football Awards: Kellen Moore, Andrew Luck And LaMichael James Among Finalists

On Thursday night, ESPN will air its 2011 College Football Awards show and alumni and fans of the Colorado schools will be familiar with several of the award finalists. The Pac-12 is well represented here, so the Colorado Buffaloes were usually on the wrong end of these players' performances.

However, leading the way is Boise St. Broncos quarterback Kellen Moore. He is a finalist for the Maxwell Award, which goes to the College Player of the Year. Moore destroyed the Air Force Falcons and Colorado St. Rams to a combined tune of 619 yards and seven touchdowns in October. Moore threw for over 3,500 yards and had 41 touchdown passes in 2011.

However, Moore will go up against Stanford Cardinal quarterback Andrew Luck and Alabama running back Trent Richardson. Luck threw for 370 yards and three touchdown passes against the Colorado Buffaloes. He also broke John Elway's school record for touchdown passes in a career and has 80 with one game remaining.

Luck is also up for the Davey O'Brien Award, presented to the top quarterback in the country. Oregon's LaMichael James had a quiet game against the Buffs, but he will be up for the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation's most outstanding running back.

Robert Woods, an USC Trojans sophomore, is up for the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's most outstanding wide receiver. Against the Buffaloes, Woods caught nine passes for 130 yards and two touchdown passes. He is going up against Oklahoma State's Justin Blackmon and Oklahoma's Ryan Broyles.
