The Air Force Falcons are looking to become the latest college basketball team to play a game on an aircraft carrier. The 2012 All-Military Classic which will include the Citadel, VMI and Army, is reportedly going to have at least one day of the tournament played on the USS Yorktown.
The idea came up because on Nov. 9 Ohio State and Marquette are scheduled to play on the USS Yorktown and then a women's game between Notre Dame and Ohio State is to follow. With the aircraft carrier already set up to host a basketball game the cost of playing there would be low. It is expected that the games to be played on the ship will be on Nov. 10 between the Citadel vs. VMI and then Air Force vs. Army.
Mike Whalen is the executive director of Morale Entertainment Foundation and he put together the 2011 Carrier Classic between Michigan State and North Carolina is saying that the All-Military Classic is 95 percent from happening on the USS Yorktown.
Whalen said he was unsure if the games on Sunday Nov. 11 will be on the ship or at McAlister Field House which is located at the Citadel's campus. McAlister Field House will be used as a backup if there is inclement weather.
If Air Force does play on the aircraft carrier they will be the second Mountain West team do so in the upcoming basketball season as San Diego State is playing Syracuse on the USS Midway.
